    Call blocking probabilities for Poisson traffic under the Multiple Fractional Channel Reservation policy

    In this paper, we study the performance of the Multiple Fractional Channel Reservation (MFCR) policy, which is a bandwidth reservation policy that allows the reservation of real (not integer) number of channels in order to favor calls of high channel (bandwidth) requirements. We consider a link of fixed capacity that accommodates Poisson arriving calls of different service-classes with different bandwidth-per-call requirements. Calls compete for the available bandwidth under the MFCR policy. To determine call blocking probabilities, we propose approximate but recursive formulas based on the notion of reserve transition rates.     A study of teletraffic problems in multicast networks

    This dissertation studies teletraffic engineering of dynamic multicast connections. The traditional models in teletraffic engineering do not handle multicast connections properly, since in a dynamic multicast tree, users may join and leave the connection freely, and thus the multicast tree evolves in time. A model called multicast loss system is used to calculate blocking probabilities in a single link and in tree-type networks. In a single link case, the problem is a generalised Engset problem, and a method for calculating call blocking probabilities for users is presented. Application of the reduced load approximation for multicast connections is studied. Blocking probabilities in a cellular system are studied by means of simulation. The analysis is mainly concentrated on tree type networks, where convolution-truncation algorithms and simulation methods for solving the blocking probabilities exactly are derived. Both single layer and hierarchically coded streams are treated. The presented algorithms reduce significantly the computational complexity of the problem, compared to direct calculation from the system state space. An approximative method is given for background traffic. The simulation method presented is an application of the Inverse Convolution Monte-Carlo method, and it gives a considerable variance reduction, and thus allows simulation with smaller sample sizes than with traditional simulation methods. Signalling load for dynamic multicast connections in a node depends on the shape of the tree as well as the location of the node in the tree. This dissertation presents a method for calculating the portion of signalling load that is caused by call establishments and tear-downs.reviewe

    MPLS is an advanced forwarding scheme which allows the network to achieve the benefits provided by traffic engineering techniques. The establishment of an end to end LSP between two IP/MPLS networks inter connected through an ATM backbone is still an open issue. This focuses in an MPLS ATM environment and address problem of provisioning a fast LSP establishment with certain QOS between 2 MPLS sub networks inter connected through an ATM backbone. The PNNI is used in ATM backbone as a routing and signaling protocol. In order to achieve the paper objectives and new PNNI elements are defined and evaluated. Voice has been the primary application in wireless network to date. However packet based application and higher bandwidth requirements to sustain these applications are ever emerging. As in wire line packet based networks while IP routing is well understood IP network by itself is still not achieved and its depart on the backbone that can offer QOS guarantee. MPLS is a newer technology that offer service information layer 2 switching and connection oriented that allows traffic engineering control traffic flows in the network.     SDN/NFV-enabled satellite communications networks: opportunities, scenarios and challenges

    In the context of next generation 5G networks, the satellite industry is clearly committed to revisit and revamp the role of satellite communications. As major drivers in the evolution of (terrestrial) fixed and mobile networks, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) technologies are also being positioned as central technology enablers towards improved and more flexible integration of satellite and terrestrial segments, providing satellite network further service innovation and business agility by advanced network resources management techniques. Through the analysis of scenarios and use cases, this paper provides a description of the benefits that SDN/NFV technologies can bring into satellite communications towards 5G. Three scenarios are presented and analysed to delineate different potential improvement areas pursued through the introduction of SDN/NFV technologies in the satellite ground segment domain.
