Multimedia information technology and the annotation of video
The state of the art in multimedia information technology has not progressed to the point where a single solution is available to meet all reasonable needs of documentalists and users of video archives. In general, we do not have an optimistic view of the usability of new technology in this domain, but digitization and digital power can be expected to cause a small revolution in the area of video archiving. The volume of data leads to two views of the future: on the pessimistic side, overload of data will cause lack of annotation capacity, and on the optimistic side, there will be enough data from which to learn selected concepts that can be deployed to support automatic annotation. At the threshold of this interesting era, we make an attempt to describe the state of the art in technology. Patent Analytics Based on Feature Vector Space Model: A Case of IoT
The number of approved patents worldwide increases rapidly each year, which
requires new patent analytics to efficiently mine the valuable information
attached to these patents. Vector space model (VSM) represents documents as
high-dimensional vectors, where each dimension corresponds to a unique term.
While originally proposed for information retrieval systems, VSM has also seen
wide applications in patent analytics, and used as a fundamental tool to map
patent documents to structured data. However, VSM method suffers from several
limitations when applied to patent analysis tasks, such as loss of
sentence-level semantics and curse-of-dimensionality problems. In order to
address the above limitations, we propose a patent analytics based on feature
vector space model (FVSM), where the FVSM is constructed by mapping patent
documents to feature vectors extracted by convolutional neural networks (CNN).
The applications of FVSM for three typical patent analysis tasks, i.e., patents
similarity comparison, patent clustering, and patent map generation are
discussed. A case study using patents related to Internet of Things (IoT)
technology is illustrated to demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of
FVSM. The proposed FVSM can be adopted by other patent analysis studies to
replace VSM, based on which various big data learning tasks can be performed

Storage Solutions for Big Data Systems: A Qualitative Study and Comparison
Big data systems development is full of challenges in view of the variety of
application areas and domains that this technology promises to serve.
Typically, fundamental design decisions involved in big data systems design
include choosing appropriate storage and computing infrastructures. In this age
of heterogeneous systems that integrate different technologies for optimized
solution to a specific real world problem, big data system are not an exception
to any such rule. As far as the storage aspect of any big data system is
concerned, the primary facet in this regard is a storage infrastructure and
NoSQL seems to be the right technology that fulfills its requirements. However,
every big data application has variable data characteristics and thus, the
corresponding data fits into a different data model. This paper presents
feature and use case analysis and comparison of the four main data models
namely document oriented, key value, graph and wide column. Moreover, a feature
analysis of 80 NoSQL solutions has been provided, elaborating on the criteria
and points that a developer must consider while making a possible choice.
Typically, big data storage needs to communicate with the execution engine and
other processing and visualization technologies to create a comprehensive
solution. This brings forth second facet of big data storage, big data file
formats, into picture. The second half of the research paper compares the
advantages, shortcomings and possible use cases of available big data file
formats for Hadoop, which is the foundation for most big data computing
technologies. Decentralized storage and blockchain are seen as the next
generation of big data storage and its challenges and future prospects have
also been discussed
Methods and apparatus for constructing and implementing a universal extension module for processing objects in a database
Methods and apparatus for providing a multi-tier object-relational database architecture are disclosed. In one illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a multi-tier database architecture comprises an object-relational database engine as a top tier, one or more domain-specific extension modules as a bottom tier, and one or more universal extension modules as a middle tier. The individual extension modules of the bottom tier operationally connect with the one or more universal extension modules which, themselves, operationally connect with the database engine. The domain-specific extension modules preferably provide such functions as search, index, and retrieval services of images, video, audio, time series, web pages, text, XML, spatial data, etc. The domain-specific extension modules may include one or more IBM DB2 extenders, Oracle data cartridges and/or Informix datablades, although other domain-specific extension modules may be used
An extended relational data base management system for engineering design
At present, the use of the relational model in the engineering design support domain is restricted due to the following: lack of ability to handle complex objects, no support for Abstract Data Types, inappropriate concurrency control for long transactions, no support for versioning and update propagation, poor efficiency, and insufficient design rule checking and consistency contraints enforcement. A simple relational database management system is designed and implemented under the UNIX operating system to incorporate two major extensions: support of user-defined Abstract Data Types and operators, and built-in Design Data Versioning. The design, implementation, and possible extensions to these new facilities are described
