    Generating Compact Geometric Track-Maps for Train Positioning Applications

    In this paper, we present a method to generate compact geometric track-maps for train-borne localization applications. Therefore, we first give a brief overview on the purpose of track maps in train-positioning applications. It becomes apparent that there are hardly any adequate methods to generate suitable geometric track-maps. This is why we present a novel map generation procedure. It uses an optimization formulation to find the continuous sequence of track geometries that fits the available measurement data best. The optimization is initialized with the results from a localization filter developed in our previous work. The localization filter also provides the required information for shape identification and measurement association. The presented approach will be evaluated on simulated data as well as on real measurements

    Increasing Accuracy in Train Localization Exploiting Track-Geometry Constraints

    Train-borne localization systems as a key component of future signalling systems are expected to offer huge economic and operational advances for the railway transportation sector. However, the reliable provision of a track-selective and constantly available location information is still unsolved and prevents the introduction of such systems so far. A contribution to overcome this issue is presented here. We show a recursive multistage filtering approach with an increased cross-track positioning accuracy, which is decisive to ensure track-selectivity. This is achieved by exploiting track-geometry constraints known in advance, as there are strict rules for the construction of railway tracks. Additionally, compact geometric track-maps can be extracted during the filtering process which are beneficial for existing train localization approaches. The filter was derived applying approximate Bayesian inference. The geometry constraints are directly incorporated in the filter design, utilizing an interacting multiple model (IMM) filter and extended Kalman filters (EKF). Throughout simulations the performance of the filter is analyzed and discussed thereafter

    GNSS Integrity Monitoring assisted by Signal Processing techniques in Harsh Environments

    The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) applications are growing and more pervasive in the modern society. The presence of multi-constellation GNSS receivers able to use signals coming from different systems like the american Global Positioning System (GPS), the european Galileo, the Chinese Beidou and the russian GLONASS, permits to have more accuracy in position solution. All the receivers provide always more reliable solution but it is important to monitor the possible presence of problems in the position computation. These problems could be caused by the presence of impairments given by unintentional sources like multipath generated by the environment or intentional sources like spoofing attacks. In this thesis we focus on design algorithms at signal processing level used to assist Integrity operations in terms of Fault Detection and Exclusion (FDE). These are standalone algorithms all implemented in a software receiver without using external information. The first step was the creation of a detector for correlation distortion due to the multipath with his limitations. Once the detection is performed a quality index for the signal is computed and a decision about the exclusion of a specific Satellite Vehicle (SV) is taken. The exclusion could be not feasible so an alternative approach could be the inflation of the variance of the error models used in the position computation. The quality signal can be even used for spoofinng applications and a novel mitigation technique is developed and presented. In addition, the mitigation of the multipath can be reached at pseudoranges level by using new method to compute the position solution. The main contributions of this thesis are: the development of a multipath, or more in general, impairments detector at signal processing level; the creation of an index to measure the quality of a signal based on the detector’s output; the description of a novel signal processing method for detection and mitigation of spoofing effects, based on the use of linear regression algorithms; An alternative method to compute the Position Velocity and Time (PVT) solution by using different well known algorithms in order to mitigate the effects of the multipath on the position domain

    Integrity Monitoring Using ARAIM Algorithm in Urban Environment

    Aviation is one of the earliest application of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Since the early days of the Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite navigation has been an essential part of the aviation industry. Being a particular mean of transport, which usually involves a large number of human lives, civil aviation always requires a high level of reliability from the navigation system. Such requirement brings about the concept of integrity, which concerns about the consistency and reliability of a navigation system, is defined as the capability of the system to provide timely warning when it should not be used for navigation. The concept of integrity allows the standardization of guidance systems' performance, with the utmost purpose of keeping safety for every flight. The concept of integrity has gained interests in other GNSS applications as well, especially in those that also require high reliability from the navigation solution, such as Intelligent Transport System (ITS), railways. This leads to the necessity to adapt the integrity monitoring techniques, in particular the Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) algorithms, to use in working conditions other than the typical airport areas, such as urban environment. As a matter of fact, adaptation of RAIM algorithms to urban environment requires a throughout analysis of the environmental difference of the working condition as well as the requirement of the intended applications. This thesis focuses on developing a Kalman filter-based Advanced RAIM (ARAIM) algorithm for urban environment, which is an adaptation of the conventional ARAIM algorithm for civil aviation. ARAIM algorithm is considered the next generation of RAIM, aiming at providing higher integrity performance for more stringent phase of flight. The first step is to survey the necessary changes to adapt ARAIM algorithm to urban scenario. Experimental study highlights the prerequisite of finding a noise model to represents the signal noise level in urban area. After a suitable noise model was found after a comparative study, the KF-based ARAIM algorithm was developed. This method evaluates the separation of state correction using different subsets of measurement to detect abnormalities as well as potential faulty satellites for exclusion. The proposed method was also validated using simulation and real data. Performance analysis results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively follows the changes of signal quality which is expected to occur frequently when moving in urban environment, confirming its suitability for integrity monitoring in urban environment

    During the 509th Colloquium of the Euromech society, held from March 24th & 25th at TU Berlin, fifty leading researchers from all over europe discussed various topics affecting both road vehicle as well as railway vehicle aerodynamics, especially drag reduction (with road vehicles), cross wind stability (with trains) and wake analysis (with both). With the increasing service speed of modern high-speed railway traffic, aerodynamic aspects are gaining importance. The aerodynamic research topics comprise both pure performance improvements, such as the continuous lowering of aerodynamic drag for energy efficiency, as well as safety relevant topics, such as cross-wind stability. The latter topic was most recently brought to attention when a swiss narrow-gauge train overturned during the severe storm Kyrill in january 2007. The shape of the train head usually has largest influence on cross wind stability. Slipstream effects of passing trains cause aerodynamic loads on objects and passengers waiting at platforms. The strength of the slipstream is determined by both the boundary layer development along the length of the train and the wake developing behind the tail of the train. Since high-speed trains can be considered to be as smooth as technically possible, attention is drawn to the wake region. The wake of the train again is also one important factor for the total drag of a train. Due to the fact that trains are bidirectional, optimisation of the leading car of a train with respect to drag and cross wind performance while simultaneously minimising the wake of the train for drag and slipstream performance is a great challenge. Modern optimisation tools are used to aid this multi-parameter multi-constraint design optimisation in conjunction with both CFD and wind tunnel investigations. Since many of the aerodynamic effects in the railway sector are of similar importance to road vehicles, the aim of the colloquium is to bridge the application of shape optimisation principles between rail- and road vehicles. Particular topics to be addressed in the colloquium are: Drag, Energy consumption and emissions: Due to increase in energy cost, drag reduction has gained focus in the past years and attention will grow in the future. Pressure induced drag is of common importance for both rail- and road vehicles. The optimisation of head- and tail shape for road vehicles as well as for bi-directional vehicles (trains) is in the focus. Interference drag between adjacent components shall also be treated. Slipstream Effects: Are a safety issue for high-train operation (Prams sucked into track due to train-induced draught flows) when trains passing platforms at high speeds. For Road vehicles, the ride stability of overtaking cars is influenced by the wake of the leading trucks and busses. Common interest is the minimisation of wake effects for both rail and road vehicles. Cross-Wind Safety, Ride stability under strong winds: Both are safety issues for rail- and road vehicles. Aerodynamic forces shall be minimised (roll moment for trains and also yaw moment for road vehicles). Strategies for Vehicle shape optimisation (head, tail and roof shape) in order to minimise aerodynamic moments. Possibilities of Flow control.     NB-IoT via non terrestrial networks

    Massive Internet of Things is expected to play a crucial role in Beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communication systems, offering seamless connectivity among heterogeneous devices without human intervention. However, the exponential proliferation of smart devices and IoT networks, relying solely on terrestrial networks, may not fully meet the demanding IoT requirements in terms of bandwidth and connectivity, especially in areas where terrestrial infrastructures are not economically viable. To unleash the full potential of 5G and B5G networks and enable seamless connectivity everywhere, the 3GPP envisions the integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) into the terrestrial ones starting from Release 17. However, this integration process requires modifications to the 5G standard to ensure reliable communications despite typical satellite channel impairments. In this framework, this thesis aims at proposing techniques at the Physical and Medium Access Control layers that require minimal adaptations in the current NB-IoT standard via NTN. Thus, firstly the satellite impairments are evaluated and, then, a detailed link budget analysis is provided. Following, analyses at the link and the system levels are conducted. In the former case, a novel algorithm leveraging time-frequency analysis is proposed to detect orthogonal preambles and estimate the signals’ arrival time. Besides, the effects of collisions on the detection probability and Bit Error Rate are investigated and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access approaches are proposed in the random access and data phases. The system analysis evaluates the performance of random access in case of congestion. Various access parameters are tested in different satellite scenarios, and the performance is measured in terms of access probability and time required to complete the procedure. Finally, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to jointly design the access and data phases, determining the number of satellite passages, the Random Access Periodicity, and the number of uplink repetitions that maximize the system's spectral efficiency

After the capture, this thesis also proposes a pipeline transportation system which utilizes the ground/ambient temperature to retain its liquid phase. Significant amount of laboratory experiment and software simulation have been conducted and conclusions and recommendation have been provided for future research work
