    Rural tourism accommodation prices by land use-based hedonic approach: First results from the case study of the self-catering cottages in Asturias

    This study analyses the impacts of environmental amenities associated with agricultural and silvicultural land use on the price of rural tourism accommodation in Asturias (Spain). A hedonic price model that relates the price of rural accommodation to environmental amenities as well as equipment, services offered, and the locational characteristics of the accommodation is estimated. The rural accommodations in the study are the self-catering cottages, the intrinsic features of which promote the development of rural tourism sustainability. Geographic information systems (GIS) data are used to measure the location and the proximity to amenities of these self-catering cottages. The main results indicate that agricultural land use has an important impact on the price of accommodation in self-catering cottages. Specifically, a high percentage of grassland in the municipality where the self-catering cottage is sited has a positive effect on rental prices, while a high percentage of arable crops has the opposite effect. The analysis is interesting for decision-making in the context of environmental policies, land use conflict resolution, and rural tourism sustainability

    MAPPA. Methodologies applied to archaeological potential Predictivity

    The fruitful cooperation over the years between the university teaching staff of Univerità di Pisa (Pisa University), the officials of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana (Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage of Tuscany), the officials of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici, Paesaggistici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le Province di Pisa e Livorno (Superintendency for Architectural, Landscape and Ethno-anthropological Heritage for the Provinces of Pisa and Livorno), and the Comune di Pisa (Municipality of Pisa) has favoured a great deal of research on issues regarding archaeological heritage and the reconstruction of the environmental and landscape context in which Pisa has evolved throughout the centuries of its history. The desire to merge this remarkable know-how into an organic framework and, above all, to make it easily accessible, not only to the scientific community and professional categories involved, but to everyone, together with the wish to provide Pisa with a Map of archaeological potential (the research, protection and urban planning tool capable of converging the heritage protection needs of the remains of the past with the development requirements of the future) led to the development of the MAPPA project – Methodologies applied to archaeological potential predictivity - funded by Regione Toscana in 2010. The two-year project started on 1 July 2011 and will end on 30 June 2013. The first year of research was dedicated to achieving the first objective, that is, to retrieving the results of archaeological investigations from the archives of Superintendencies and University and from the pages of scientific publications, and to making them easily accessible; these results have often never been published or have often been published incompletely and very slowly. For this reason, a webGIS (“MappaGIS” that may freely accessed at http://mappaproject.arch.unipi.it/?page_id=452) was created and will be followed by a MOD (Mappa Open Data archaeological archive), the first Italian archive of open archaeological data, in line with European directives regarding access to Public Administration data and recently implemented by the Italian government also (the beta version of the archive can be viewed at http://mappaproject.arch.unipi.it/?page_id=454). Details are given in this first volume about the operational decisions that led to the creation of the webGIS: the software used, the system architecture, the organisation of information and its structuring into various information layers. But not only. The creation of the webGIS also gave us the opportunity to focus on a series of considerations alongside the work carried out by the MAPPA Laboratory researchers. We took the decision to publish these considerations with a view to promoting debate within the scientific community and, more in general, within the professional categories involved (e.g. public administrators, university researchers, archaeology professionals). This allowed us to overcome the critical aspects that emerged, such as the need to update the archaeological excavation documentation and data archiving systems in order to adjust them to the new standards provided by IT development; most of all, the need for greater and more rapid spreading of information, without which research cannot truly progress. Indeed, it is by comparing and connecting new data in every possible and, at times, unexpected way that research can truly thrive

    Imaging multi-age construction settlement behaviour by advanced SAR interferometry

    This paper focuses on the application of Advanced Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (A-DInSAR) to subsidence-related issues, with particular reference to ground settlements due to external loads. Beyond the stratigraphic setting and the geotechnical properties of the subsoil, other relevant boundary conditions strongly influence the reliability of remotely sensed data for quantitative analyses and risk mitigation purposes. Because most of the Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) measurement points (Persistent Scatterers, PSs) lie on structures and infrastructures, the foundation type and the age of a construction are key factors for a proper interpretation of the time series of ground displacements. To exemplify a methodological approach to evaluate these issues, this paper refers to an analysis carried out in the coastal/deltaic plain west of Rome (Rome and Fiumicino municipalities) affected by subsidence and related damages to structures. This region is characterized by a complex geological setting (alternation of recent deposits with low and high compressibilities) and has been subjected to different urbanisation phases starting in the late 1800s, with a strong acceleration in the last few decades. The results of A-DInSAR analyses conducted from 1992 to 2015 have been interpreted in light of high-resolution geological/geotechnical models, the age of the construction, and the types of foundations of the buildings on which the PSs are located. Collection, interpretation, and processing of geo-thematic data were fundamental to obtain high-resolution models; change detection analyses of the land cover allowed us to classify structures/infrastructures in terms of the construction period. Additional information was collected to define the types of foundations, i.e., shallow versus deep foundations. As a result, we found that only by filtering and partitioning the A-DInSAR datasets on the basis of the above-mentioned boundary conditions can the related time series be considered a proxy of the consolidation process governing the subsidence related to external loads as confirmed by a comparison with results from a physically based back analysis based on Terzaghi's theory. Therefore, if properly managed, the A-DInSAR data represents a powerful tool for capturing the evolutionary stage of the process for a single building and has potential for forecasting the behaviour of the terrain-foundation-structure combination

    Human-environment dynamics across the Bronze Age in northern Italy: method testing and multi-proxy approaches

    Besides technological innovations and new typological features, the transition into the Bronze Age in northern Italy is marked by the adoption of distinctive settlement strategies. Prominent differences with previous periods are represented not only by higher numbers and density of settlements, but also by a widespread preference for wetland areas. These phenomena are particularly evident in the Lake Garda region, where a rising number of lacustrine pile-dwelling settlements is documented since the Bronze Age onset (approximately 4150 years cal. BP). The pile-dwelling phenomenon lasted approximately for one millennium, approximately until 3150 years cal. BP). At the end of the Late Bronze Age, this settlement system collapsed, leaving the area largely depopulated. Widespread settlement abandonment did not affect only the surroundings of Lake Garda. In the neighboring central Po Plain, a dense network of riverine villages developed since approximately 3500 years cal. BP. These moat-and-rampart villages, locally termed “terramare”, abruptly disappeared together with the last pile dwellings. The reasons behind the rise and demise of these extensive lacustrine and riverine settlement networks remain currently open for discussion. Palaeoecological studies conducted in the area focused mostly on developing qualitative land-use narratives for the Bronze Age. As a result, multiple questions remain to be addressed concerning the determination of local climate trajectories. Similarly, quantitative land-cover approaches are left largely unexplored. Given these premises, this project aims at improving the available knowledge concerning both the role of climate and land use dynamics in northern Italy across the Bronze Age and neighboring periods, with a special focus on the pile-dwelling phenomenon in the southern Lake Garda region. The results are presented in the form of a cumulative dissertation composed of three published papers. The first of these three contributions focuses on the sedimentary record of Bande di Cavriana, a drained wetland in the Lake Garda area. Here, palynological and geochemical analysis provided new evidences that the rise of the Bronze Age pile-dwelling phenomenon occurred under a rapidly changing climate. The second paper focuses on the collapse of Bronze Age settlement networks. Pollen-based temperature and precipitation models obtained from Northern Italian sites depict increasingly arid conditions towards the end of the Bronze Age. This reconstruction is in agreement with the current archaeological narrative, which attributes the end of the central Po Plain settlement networks to a combination of landscape overexploitation and to the emergence of unsuitable climatic conditions. The third contribution serves primarily a methodological role within this project. It provided the opportunity to test extensively a landscape reconstruction algorithm based on pollen data and remote sensing. The application of this method to pollen sequences from Lake Garda provided a very first quantitative reconstruction of land cover changes across the Copper Age- Bronze Age transition, in connection with the establishment of the first pile-dwelling settlements

    Rising groundwater levels in the Neapolitan area and its impacts on civil engineering structures, agricultural soils and archaeological sites

    The rise of groundwater levels (GWLr) is a worldwide phenomenon with several consequences for urban and rural environment, cultural heritage and human health. In this thesis the phenomenon and its effects are analysed in two sectors of the Metropolitan City of Naples (southern Italy). These areas are the central sector of the eastern plain of Naples and the Cumae archaeological site in the western coastal sector of Phlegraean Fields. The triggering mechanism of GWLr is attributed to anthropogenic and natural causes, as the groundwater rebound (GR) process and the relative sea level rise due to volcano-tectonic subsidence of coastal areas. In the eastern plain of Naples, the interruption of pumping for public and private purposes occurred in 1990, leading to a progressive increase of piezometric levels with values up to 16.54 m. Since the end of 2000s, episodes of groundwater flooding (GF) have been registered on underground structures and agricultural soils. The historical piezometric levels and a comprehensive conceptual model of the aquifer have been reconstructed, as well as a first inventory of GF episodes and the hydrogeological controlling factors of GF occurrence have been detected. The economic consequences of GF have been analysed for an experimental building of study area, in which a sharp increment of expenditures has been registered. These costs include technical and legal support, construction and maintenance of GF mitigation measures and electricity consumption. Others GWLr-induced phenomena have been recognised, as ground vertical deformation and variations of the groundwater contamination. A relationship between GWLr and ground uplift emerges from the coupled analysis of piezometric and interferometric data, referred to the 1989-2013 period. The ground deformation occurs in response to the recovery of pore-pressure in the aquifer system, reaching an uplift magnitude up to 40-50 mm. In the 1989-2017 period, the piezometric levels and the concentrations of some natural contaminants in groundwater (Fe, Mn, fluorides) show opposite trends, conversely the same rising trend has been observed with nitrates. These different responses to piezometric rise are related to the lack of mobilization of deep fluids due to the interruption of pumping and to the reduction of the surficial contaminants' time travel caused by a shorter thickness of the vadose zone. In the western sector of Phlegraean Fields, the naturally triggered GWLr has caused GF in the Cumae archaeological site for the last decade, threatening safeguard and conservation of the archaeological heritage. From an integrated hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic survey, a considerable contamination of groundwater resulted, due to the presence of rising highly mineralized fluids, mobilized during pumping periods, and others anthropogenic sources of contamination. Lastly, a novel methodology for groundwater flooding susceptibility (GFS) assessment has been developed by using machine learning techniques and tested in the eastern plain of Naples. Points of GF occurrence have been connected to environmental predisposing factors through Spatial Distribution Models' algorithms to estimate the most prone areas' distribution. Ensemble Models have been carried out to reduce the uncertainty associated with each algorithm and increase its reliability. Mapping of GFS has been realized by dividing occurrence probability values into five classes of susceptibility. Results show an optimal correspondence between GF points' location and the highest classes (93% of GF points falls into high and very high classes). The results of this research provide new knowledge on the GWLr phenomenon that has impacted a large territory of the Metropolitan City of Naples. The methodological approach used can be exported in others hydrogeological contexts to characterize GWLr and its impacts. In addition, the implemented GFS methodology represents a new tool to assist local government authorities, planners and water decision-makers in addressing the problems deriving from GF, and a first step for the evaluation of GF risk as required by Italian and European legislation
