The Future of Neutrino Mass Measurements: Terrestrial, Astrophysical, and Cosmological Measurements in the Next Decade. Highlights of the NuMass 2013 Workshop. Milano, Italy, February 4 - 7, 2013
The third Workshop of the NuMass series ("The Future of Neutrino Mass
Measurements: Terrestrial, Astrophysical, and Cosmological Measurements in the
Next Decade: NuMass 2013") was held at Dipartimento di Fisica "G. Occhialini,
University of Milano-Bicocca in Milano, Italy, on 4-7 February 2013. The goal
of this international workshop was to review the status and future of direct
and indirect neutrino mass measurements in the laboratory as well as from
astrophysical and cosmological observations. This paper collects most of the
contributions presented during the Workshop
Towards a Holistic CAD Platform for Nanotechnologies
Silicon-based CMOS technologies are predicted to reach their ultimate limits
by the middle of the next decade. Research on nanotechnologies is actively
conducted, in a world-wide effort to develop new technologies able to maintain
the Moore's law. They promise revolutionizing the computing systems by
integrating tremendous numbers of devices at low cost. These trends will have a
profound impact on the architectures of computing systems and will require a
new paradigm of CAD. The paper presents a work in progress on this direction.
It is aimed at fitting requirements and constraints of nanotechnologies, in an
effort to achieve efficient use of the huge computing power promised by them.
To achieve this goal we are developing CAD tools able to exploit efficiently
these huge computing capabilities promised by nanotechnologies in the domain of
simulation of complex systems composed by huge numbers of relatively simple
elements.Comment: Submitted on behalf of TIMA Editions

IMPURITY TRAPPING EFFECTS IN THE LOCALIZATION OF MUONS IN SOLIDS
Muon spin rotation ( mu SR) experiments are now regularly used to study solids and solid-state processes. The interpretation of mu SR data is usually based on a 'standard' picture in which the muons localise randomly in the solid, and then diffuse, possibly encountering impurities. There remain some important cases where no satisfactory interpretation results. For some of these anomalous systems the authors propose an alternative picture in which the two different factors are the importance of metastable (free muon) excited states, and the role of impurities in causing localisation. They show this allows a possible explanation of results for Al:Mn and demonstrate that elastic strain fields of defects may be a major factor in influencing localisation. They also propose a new mechanism for delayed self-trapping
Sub-pixel resolving optofluidic microscope for on-chip cell imaging
We report the implementation of a fully on-chip, lensless, sub-pixel resolving optofluidic microscope (SROFM). The device utilizes microfluidic flow to deliver specimens directly across a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor to generate a sequence of low-resolution (LR) projection images, where resolution is limited by the sensor's pixel size. This image sequence is then processed with a pixel super-resolution algorithm to reconstruct a single high resolution (HR) image, where features beyond the Nyquist rate of the LR images are resolved. We demonstrate the device's capabilities by imaging microspheres, protist Euglena gracilis, and Entamoeba invadens cysts with sub-cellular resolution and establish that our prototype has a resolution limit of 0.75 microns. Furthermore, we also apply the same pixel super-resolution algorithm to reconstruct HR videos in which the dynamic interaction between the fluid and the sample, including the in-plane and out-of-plane rotation of the sample within the flow, can be monitored in high resolution. We believe that the powerful combination of both the pixel super-resolution and optofluidic microscopy techniques within our SROFM is a significant step forwards toward a simple, cost-effective, high throughput and highly compact imaging solution for biomedical and bioscience needs
