    Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), initially thought to act specifically on the vascular system, exert trophic effects on neural cells during development and adulthood. Therefore, the VEGF system serves as a promising therapeutic target for brain pathologies, but its simultaneous action on vascular cells paves the way for harmful side effects. To circumvent these deleterious effects, many studies have aimed to clarify whether VEGFs directly affect neural cells or if the effects are mediated secondarily via other cell types, like vascular cells. A great number of reports have shown the expression and function of VEGF receptors (VEGFRs), mainly VEGFR-1 and -2, in neural cells, where VEGFR-2 has been described as the major mediator of VEGF-A signals.     Automatic Segmentation of Exudates in Ocular Images using Ensembles of Aperture Filters and Logistic Regression

    Hard and soft exudates are the main signs of diabetic macular edema (DME). The segmentation of both kinds of exudates generates valuable information not only for the diagnosis of DME, but also for treatment, which helps to avoid vision loss and blindness. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the automatic segmentation of exudates in ocular fundus images. The proposed algorithm is based on ensembles of aperture filters that detect exudate candidates and remove major blood vessels from the processed images. Then, logistic regression is used to classify each candidate as either exudate or non-exudate based on a vector of 31 features that characterize each potensial lesion.     Network diversity and maritime flows

    Coupled and interdependent networks constitute a relatively recent research field that has been so far little invested by port and maritime specialists. The extent to which certain ports benefit from being connected to multiple commodity flows in the maritime network has in fact been poorly addressed. A global database of merchant vessel inter-port movements that occurred in October and November 2004 allows building the respective weighted graphs of solid bulk, liquid bulk, container, general cargo, and passenger/vehicles. Main results underline a very strong influence of commodity diversity on the distribution of maritime traffics among ports and links between them. The research also underlines the role of different regional settings in the specialization of traffic flows

    Maritime Commerce in Greater Philadelphia: Assessing Industry Trends and Growth Opportunities for Delaware River Ports is an evaluation of existing port conditions along the Delaware River and market-driven opportunities for expansion. The report includes an economic impact analysis, Delaware River port descriptions, global trends, and recommended strategies for ports growth. Key findings include:Region-wide port activity generates 69millionintaxrevenuesforstategovernmentsacrossGreaterPhiladelphiaandmorethan69 million in tax revenues for state governments across Greater Philadelphia and more than 11 million in Philadelphia Wage Tax revenues.Each on-site port job supports two jobs from port activity and employee spending. Total regional port-related employment is 12,000+ jobs.Delaware River ports import nearly 1/2 of the nation's cocoa beans, almost 1/3 of the bananas, and a 1/4 of all fruit and nuts.Growing maritime commerce in Greater Philadelphia will require collaboration among Delaware River ports to leverage existing strengths and strategically invest in regional infrastructure improvements
