ISML: an interface specification meta-language
In this paper we present an abstract metaphor model situated within a model-based user interface framework. The inclusion of metaphors in graphical user interfaces is a well established, but mostly craft-based strategy to design. A substantial body of notations and tools can be found within the model-based user interface design literature, however an explicit treatment of metaphor and its mappings to other design views has yet to be addressed. We introduce the Interface Specification Meta-Language (ISML) framework and demonstrate its use in comparing the semantic and syntactic features of an interactive system. Challenges facing this research are outlined and further work proposed
Attention-Based Applications in Extended Reality to Support Autistic Users: A Systematic Review
With the rising prevalence of autism diagnoses, it is essential for research
to understand how to leverage technology to support the diverse nature of
autistic traits. While traditional interventions focused on technology for
medical cure and rehabilitation, recent research aims to understand how
technology can accommodate each unique situation in an efficient and engaging
way. Extended reality (XR) technology has been shown to be effective in
improving attention in autistic users given that it is more engaging and
motivating than other traditional mediums. Here, we conducted a systematic
review of 59 research articles that explored the role of attention in XR
interventions for autistic users. We systematically analyzed demographics,
study design and findings, including autism screening and attention measurement
methods. Furthermore, given methodological inconsistencies in the literature,
we systematically synthesize methods and protocols including screening tools,
physiological and behavioral cues of autism and XR tasks. While there is
substantial evidence for the effectiveness of using XR in attention-based
interventions for autism to support autistic traits, we have identified three
principal research gaps that provide promising research directions to examine
how autistic populations interact with XR. First, our findings highlight the
disproportionate geographic locations of autism studies and underrepresentation
of autistic adults, evidence of gender disparity, and presence of individuals
diagnosed with co-occurring conditions across studies. Second, many studies
used an assortment of standardized and novel tasks and self-report assessments
with limited tested reliability. Lastly, the research lacks evidence of
performance maintenance and transferability.Comment: [Accepted version] K. Wang, S. J. Julier and Y. Cho, "Attention-Based

Software Product Line for Metaverse: Preliminary Results
The Metaverse is a network of eXtended Reality applications (XR apps)
connected to each other, over the Internet infrastructure, allowing network
users, systems, and devices to access them. It is very challenging to implement
solutions for XR apps, due to the combination of complex concerns that should
be addressed: multiple users with non-traditional input and output devices,
different hardware platforms that should be addressed, forceful interactive
rates, and experimental interaction techniques, among other issues. Therefore,
this work aims to present a Software Product Line (SPL)-based approach to
support the development of Web XR apps. More specifically, we define a features
model that represents similarities and variables (domain analysis); we defined
a core composed of generic and reusable software artifacts (domain project);
and we developed an interface to support the instantiation of a Web XR app
family, named MetaSee Features Model Editor (domain implementation). This
approach integrates with a component of the MetaSEE architecture (Metaverse for
Software Engineering Education). A preliminary assessment found that Features
Model has conceptual consistency from the point of view of the complexity of
Web XR Apps multimodal interaction. As future work, features model and
artifacts will be increased with improvements and an evaluation with a
significant number of participants will be made
Smart operators: How augmented and virtual technologies are affecting the worker's performance in manufacturing contexts
Purpose: The correct interaction between the workforce and augmented, virtual, and mixed reality technologies represents a crucial aspect of the success of the smart factory. This interaction is, indeed, affected by the variability of human behavior and its reliability, which can strongly influence the quality, safety, and productivity standards. For this reason, this paper aims to provide a clear and complete analysis of the impacts of these technologies on the performance of operators. Design/methodology/approach: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted to identify peer-reviewed papers that focused on the implementation of augmented and virtual technologies in manufacturing systems and their effects on human performance. Findings: In total, 61 papers were selected and thoroughly analyzed. The findings of this study reveal that Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality can be applied for several applications in manufacturing systems with different types of devices, that involve various advantages and disadvantages. The workerās performance that are influencing by the use of these technologies are above all time to complete a task, error rate and mental and physical workload. Originality/value: Over the years Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality technologies in manufacturing systems have been investigated by researchers. Several studies mostly focused on technological issues, have been conducted. The role of the operator, whose tasks may be influenced positively or negatively by the use of new devices, has been hardly ever analyzed and a deep analysis of human performance affected by these technologies is missing. This study represents a preliminary analysis to fill this gap. The results obtained from the SLR allowed us to develop a conceptual framework that investigates the current state-of-the-art knowledge about the topic and highlights gaps in the current researchPeer Reviewe
