    Weblogs have powerful effects on the society, millions of people read blogs daily. English is the main language used, but indigenous languages including Javanese are also used to blog. Javanese blogs need to be introduced especially to young generations to maintain the existence of this old language as they tend not to use it in school and at home. The method used in this study is descriptive, the data are mainly taken from internet. By visiting the suggested blogs, readers will realize that Javanese still exists and needs to be maintained by participating themselves in any of these Javanese blogs

    In this paper I examine the differences between colonists’ and Indians’ perceptions and use of language in early Pennsylvania. Through consideration of translation challenges in both spoken and written contexts, I conclude that while residents of the region created systems for coping with linguistic issues, basic disparities between native and colonial forms of communication persisted in complicating diplomatic relations. The title of the paper is taken from the August 26, 1758 entry in The Journal of Christian Frederick Post and is part of the Pennsylvanian government’s proposal for closer relations with Indians

    THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BANYUMASAN CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURES

    To mean what you say is sometimes problematic in daily conversation, moreover in some indigenous dialects. It requires comprehensive context to achieve the core of communication. So does in Banyumasan. Banyumasan or Banyumas dialect is a variant which is found along the flow of Serayu river. The river flows from Sindoro-Sumbing Mountains (Koentjaraningrat, 1984:23). Banyumas dialect is one of some variants of Javanese language. Banyumasan has some differences compared to standard Javanese spoken in Jogjakarta, Surakarta and Semarang. Those differences are also reflected in the characteristics of conversational implicatures found in this dialect. Conversational implicaure is a proposition that is implied by the utterance of sentence in a context even though that proposition is not a part of nor an entailment of what was actually said (Grice, 1975; Gazdar, 1979). The characteristics of conversational implicatures are calculability, cancellability, non-detachability, non-conventionality, and indeterminacy.     In this article, an account is given of the planning of a trilingual dictionary Yilumbu– French–English. The focus is on the target user, the purpose, nature and typology of the planned dictionary. Attention is also paid to some macro- and microstructural issues. For example, all types of lexical items, including multiword lexical items, are given lemma status. Moreover all items are included according to the word tradition and on account of their usage frequency in the corpus. Apart from these aspects, types of dialectal forms as well as the type of special-field lexical items are also discussed. From a microstructural point of view, this article investigates different kinds of data types to be considered for inclusion in complex articles in particular. User-friendliness parameters and innovative access structure procedures also come into play.Cet article rend compte de la planification d'un dictionnaire trilingue yilumbu–français– anglais. Le centre d'intérêt réside au niveau du public cible, l'objectif, la nature et la typologie du dictionnaire proposé. Une attention est aussi accordée à quelques problèmes macro- et microstructurels. Par exemple, tous les types d'items lexicaux, y compris les items lexicaux formés de plusieurs mots, reçoivent le statut de lemme. En outre, tous les termes sont inclus selon la tradition dumot et sur la base de leur fréquence d'emploi dans le corpus. Hormis ces aspects, les types de formes dialectales ainsi que le type d'items lexicaux de spécialité sont également discutés. D'un point de vue microstructurel, cet article explore différents types de données à considérer pour inclusion dans les articles complexes en particulier.     The use of woman as a commercial object or advertisements through written expression by the drivers at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks is rapidly adopted. It is said that the more peculiar of the written expression, the higher prestige earned by the truck drivers. This research aims to analysis the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks that use woman as an object of its written expression by using appraisal system. The data used in this research are from blogs through online that list some bumper stickers from Jabotabek area.The methods used to analyze the data are referential method and substitusional method.The result reveals that the representation of woman as an object of written expression at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks always has negative connotation, especially as an object of sexual matters by the men

    TRANSLATING A MOTHER TONGUE

    Most Indonesians of my generation are multilingual; we can at least speak two or three languages, namely Indonesian, English, and a local language. This paper reflects my personal effort in discovering how the languages are positioned in my mind. I assume that Javanese was the first language I acquired, followed by Indonesian, and then English. As I grew up, Javanese became the language I use mainly at home or to certain people only. Indonesian and English, on the other hand, seem to be taking the more dominant place in terms of level of proficiency and amount of usage. Needless to say, I only use my mother tongue in informal conversational level. By translating Javanese literary work into English, relying on translation theories and language of thought, this project helps me assess my real mastery of a language I call mother tongue. The reflection on the translation process shows that my oral proficiency in the mother tongue is perceived to be higher than reading and writing proficiencies. The reading comprehension skills in the register of literary texts are lower than expected because of my intensive exposure to other languages

    BILINGUALISM AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THE MOTHER TONGUE IN MULTILINGUAL SINGAPORE

    Two issues have been identified that act against the development of a strong bilingual and biliteracy proficiency among pupils in Singapore schools: 1. English is perceived as having a much higher status than the Mother Tongue (MT) and the language in which success is primarily measured given its primacy as the language of instruction in all subjects except the MT. Consequently, children’s use of their MT has been observed to decline in favour of English; 2. English and the MT are taught in effect as a form of double monolingualism, in watertight compartments, with no opportunity for bilingual learning or reflection in class on the relationship between the two languages. This artificially blocks pupils’ access to the other language and prevents the development of a more robust bilingual. In this presentation, I will describe the ways in which the MT is maintained in Singapore, and in particular focus on the research that has recently been completed on the use of dual language books to rejuvenate the interest and ability to read in Malay in bilingual Malay children
