The transitivity analysis of the news headlines of The Jakarta Post

This study is conducted to describe and explain the process types of transitivity analysis that are characterized in news headline of The Jakarta Post articles. This study reveals the dominant process type in the news headline articles of The Jakarta Post and also aims to explain the pedagogical implications of the transitivity analysis. The object of this study is news taken from The Jakarta Post published on May 1st 2017 to May 31st 2017. This study concerns on functional grammar, mainly on transitivity analysis. Some theories related to the literature, discourse, grammar, news and ideational meaning itself are used in order to get the objective of this study. The technique of data analysis in this study is a qualitative one. The procedure of collecting data included seeking, selecting, reading and identifying the data. In analyzing, the data are collected by reading and segmenting them into clauses. The transitivity analysis are conducted to figure out the type of process in all of the clauses, and then explained each type of process found in the news. The argumentation is also given to support the comparison between the theories and the analysis. The study finds that there are six types of processes found in the news. Behavioral process is found 36%, verbal process is found 24%, relational process is used 18%, material process occurs 13%, mental process is found 7% and existential process is found 2%. From the result, it can be concluded that in composing a headline text uses more behavioral processes. The behavioral process dominates a news text which reports events and accidents

Discursive Approaches to Politics in Malaysia

This open access book examines Malaysian politics using a linguistic perspective. It explores how language serves to (de)legitimise governance, and its subsequent policies and activities in Malaysia. Grounded in discourse studies, this edited volume presents research on the discourses produced by and on Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional from 2008 to 2020, studying how political actors (de)legitimise their governance through discursive means. The thirteen original chapters select spoken, print and digital texts in English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, and deploy varied theoretical and methodological approaches. Their linguistic analysis unearths the language features and strategies that facilitate (de)legitimation. It shows how political actors shape the discursive representation and evaluation of multiple concerns in Malaysia. Consequently, Discursive Approaches to Politics in Malaysia: Legitimising Governance improves our understanding of contemporary Malaysian political discourse. The Development and Testing of Consensus Recommendations for Collaborative Practice in the Malaysian Mental Health System

This project used participatory action research to develop and test a model of collaborative practice for the Malaysian mental health system. A hospital committee and a Delphi committee were formed to create a set of collaborative practice guidelines. Some of these recommendations were implemented in a psychiatric hospital, including staff training and systems changes. A realist evaluation, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, showed that some of these changes were effective in improving collaboration

Health help seeking behaviour and health care services utilisation of Bruneian men: a grounded theory study.

ABSTRACT Despite the growth in research on masculinities and health help seeking behaviour we have little idea of how gender and ethnicity intersect to inform health help seeking behaviour among men in multi-ethnic cultures. This paper presents findings from a PhD research project investigating how being a man in Brunei Darussalam, a country with a strong religious and diverse cultural society; influences men’s perceptions of and attitudes towards their health and health help seeking behaviour. Using Grounded Theory, this thesis reports a study that utilised semi structured interviews and focus group discussions with a total of 47 men and women from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Brunei Darussalam. Three key themes emerged from the analysis of interviews with men: 1) The physicality of health and its importance to masculinity; 2) “Ikhtiar” as a way of ‘doing masculinity’ in the context of experiences of ill-health; and 3) masculinity and legitimation of health help seeking. A core concept found in this study relates to the process by which men operate and re-negotiate their masculinity in relation to their engagement with health care services, particularly when their ability to perform masculine responsibilities are potentially jeopardised by ill-health. Themes emerging from interviews with women focused on the relationship between wives and husbands, and daughters and fathers, and the way caring responsibilities reinforced bonds within the family. Women saw men’s reluctance to use healthcare as ‘normal for men’, while men acknowledged that pressure from wives was a factor in their decision to seek help. This study contributes to the development of knowledge about masculinities and health in a geographical region where to date there has been no empirical research, despite the existence of epidemiological evidence indicating that men’s health needs are serious and appear to be unmet

Information needs of children of a parent with cancer

This PhD thesis explored the experiences of dependent children and children care-givers facing challenges with their parent s cancer. The aim was to understand children s information experience including their perception of cancer and information culture; information needs, information seeking behaviour, barriers and enablers. The research used a six-stage process. This was informed by an extensive literature review and discussions with cancer specialists, psychologists and researchers from United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Malaysia. This study used a three-cycle, eight-step process of Participative Action Research (PAR) with participation from ten Malay breast cancer patients and their dependent children. Three bilingual (English and Bahasa Malaysia) instruments were developed; 1) An Inquiry to Participate Form to select participants who had dependent children, 2) Three opened-ended questions to obtain children s cancer experience and information needs where drawing was used to encourage children s responses and, 3) A 15-question questionnaire to understand children s experience and information preference. Cancer affected parenting abilities and challenging experiences identified the lack of culturally relevant information and the shift in caregiving responsibilities to dependent children. Children s understanding of cancer was influenced by their experiences and observations, many of which resulted in misconceptions about cancer, its causes, treatment and preventative measures. Children participant s reaction to a health situation triggered their information behaviour. The burden of caregiving and the consequences of a lack of information were greater than anticipated; children had many dimensions of concern and experienced many challenges. This advocated for a more assessable, attractive and sensitive information system. Data synthesis contributed to the development of a Children s Reactive Information Seeking Behaviour An Integrated Model that seeks to explain the relationship between children participants reaction to a health situation and the subsequent processes they undergo to resolve their state of information need

Learning Evaluation of the Disability Rights Fund

The Disability Rights Fund (DRF) is a partnership between funders and the disability community that provides grants and other support for work at country-level towards the realisation of rights affirmed in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. DRF believes that enhancing the participation of persons with disabilities in the realisation of their rights will have an impact on poverty among persons with disabilities.In 2012, DRF conducted its first external evaluation. The evaluation, which was conducted by Universalia, concluded with an overall positive assessment of the Fund's performance, highlighting the Fund's relevance and progress towards its stated results. In 2013, DRF concluded another partnership agreement with DFID of the duration of 3 years. Both as part of the conditions set in this partnership agreement and as DRF being a learning-oriented organization, DRF launched a call for proposals to conduct a learning evaluation, consisting of two interrelated components: the development or adjustment of DRF's tools for data collection, recording, and management; and the mid-term evaluation of DRF grantmaking operations.The Learning Evaluation had the following objectives: i) provide an update on progress made towards the achievement of the output-, outcome- and impact-level results in DRF's logical framework; ii) identify DRF's contributions to results achieved and factors affecting performance; iii) make an overall assessment of DRF's value for money; and iv) provide DRF staff with a clear set of lessons learned to improve current interventions and guide future ones
