    Smoothness perception : investigation of beat rate effect on frame rate perception

    Despite the complexity of the Human Visual System (HVS), research over the last few decades has highlighted a number of its limitations. These limitations can be exploited in computer graphics to significantly reduce computational cost and thus required rendering time, without a viewer perceiving any difference in resultant image quality. Furthermore, cross-modal interaction between different modalities, such as the influence of audio on visual perception, has also been shown as significant both in psychology and computer graphics. In this paper we investigate the effect of beat rate on temporal visual perception, i.e. frame rate perception. For the visual quality and perception evaluation, a series of psychophysical experiments was conducted and the data analysed. The results indicate that beat rates in some cases do affect temporal visual perception and that certain beat rates can be used in order to reduce the amount of rendering required to achieve a perceptual high quality. This is another step towards a comprehensive understanding of auditory-visual cross-modal interaction and could be potentially used in high-fidelity interactive multi-sensory virtual environments

    Auditory-visual interaction in computer graphics

    Generating high-fidelity images in real-time at reasonable frame rates, still remains one of the main challenges in computer graphics. Furthermore, visuals remain only one of the multiple sensory cues that are required to be delivered simultaneously in a multi-sensory virtual environment. The most frequently used sense, besides vision, in virtual environments and entertainment, is audio. While the rendering community focuses on solving the rendering equation more quickly using various algorithmic and hardware improvements, the exploitation of human limitations to assist in this process remain largely unexplored. Many findings in the research literature prove the existence of physical and psychological limitations of humans, including attentional, perceptual and limitations of the Human Sensory System (HSS). Knowledge of the Human Visual System (HVS) may be exploited in computer graphics to significantly reduce rendering times without the viewer being aware of any resultant image quality difference. Furthermore, cross-modal effects, that is the influence of one sensory input on another, for example sound and visuals, have also recently been shown to have a substantial impact on viewer perception of virtual environment. In this thesis, auditory-visual cross-modal interaction research findings have been investigated and adapted to graphics rendering purposes. The results from five psychophysical experiments, involving 233 participants, showed that, even in the realm of computer graphics, there is a strong relationship between vision and audition in both spatial and temporal domains. The first experiment, investigating the auditory-visual cross-modal interaction within spatial domain, showed that unrelated sound effects reduce perceived rendering quality threshold. In the following experiments, the effect of audio on temporal visual perception was investigated. The results obtained indicate that audio with certain beat rates can be used in order to reduce the amount of rendering required to achieve a perceptual high quality. Furthermore, introducing the sound effect of footsteps to walking animations increased the visual smoothness perception. These results suggest that for certain conditions the number of frames that need to be rendered each second can be reduced, saving valuable computation time, without the viewer being aware of this reduction. This is another step towards a comprehensive understanding of auditory-visual cross-modal interaction and its use in high-fidelity interactive multi-sensory virtual environments

    Media Presence and Inner Presence: The Sense of Presence in Virtual Reality Technologies

    Abstract. Presence is widely accepted as the key concept to be considered in any research involving human interaction with Virtual Reality (VR). Since its original description, the concept of presence has developed over the past decade to be considered by many researchers as the essence of any experience in a virtual environment. The VR generating systems comprise two main parts: a technological component and a psychological experience. The different relevance given to them produced two different but coexisting visions of presence: the rationalist and the psychological/ecological points of view. The rationalist point of view considers a VR system as a collection of specific machines with the necessity of the inclusion \ud of the concept of presence. The researchers agreeing with this approach describe the sense of presence as a function of the experience of a given medium (Media Presence). The main result of this approach is the definition of presence as the perceptual illusion of non-mediation produced by means of the disappearance of the medium from the conscious attention of the subject. At the other extreme, there \ud is the psychological or ecological perspective (Inner Presence). Specifically, this perspective considers presence as a neuropsychological phenomenon, evolved from the interplay of our biological and cultural inheritance, whose goal is the control of the human activity. \ud Given its key role and the rate at which new approaches to understanding and examining presence are appearing, this chapter draws together current research on presence to provide an up to date overview of the most widely accepted approaches to its understanding and measurement

    Towards transparent telepresence

    It is proposed that the concept of transparent telepresence can be closely approached through high fidelity technological mediation. It is argued that the matching of the system capabilities to those of the human user will yield a strong sense of immersion and presence at a remote site. Some applications of such a system are noted. The concept is explained and critical system elements are described together with an overview of some of the necessary system specifications

The place of visualisation within this has been paramount. This paper argues that the process of digitally constructing the Roman world and the exploration of the resultant models are useful methods for interpretation and influential factors in the creation of a popular Roman aesthetic. Furthermore, it suggests ways in which novel computational techniques enable the systematic deconstruction of such models, in turn re-purposing the many extant representations of Roman architecture and material culture

The concept of 'presence' refers to the phenomenon of behaving and feeling as if we are in the virtual world created by computer displays. In this article, we argue that presence is worthy of study by neuroscientists, and that it might aid the study of perception and consciousness

    Fidelity metrics for virtual environment simulations based on spatial memory awareness states

    This paper describes a methodology based on human judgments of memory awareness states for assessing the simulation fidelity of a virtual environment (VE) in relation to its real scene counterpart. To demonstrate the distinction between task performance-based approaches and additional human evaluation of cognitive awareness states, a photorealistic VE was created. Resulting scenes displayed on a headmounted display (HMD) with or without head tracking and desktop monitor were then compared to the real-world task situation they represented, investigating spatial memory after exposure. Participants described how they completed their spatial recollections by selecting one of four choices of awareness states after retrieval in an initial test and a retention test a week after exposure to the environment. These reflected the level of visual mental imagery involved during retrieval, the familiarity of the recollection and also included guesses, even if informed. Experimental results revealed variations in the distribution of participants’ awareness states across conditions while, in certain cases, task performance failed to reveal any. Experimental conditions that incorporated head tracking were not associated with visually induced recollections. Generally, simulation of task performance does not necessarily lead to simulation of the awareness states involved when completing a memory task. The general premise of this research focuses on how tasks are achieved, rather than only on what is achieved. The extent to which judgments of human memory recall, memory awareness states, and presence in the physical and VE are similar provides a fidelity metric of the simulation in question
