On the path of Exploratory Search Users - A Semantic Web tool
L’Exploratory Search, paradigma di ricerca basato sulle attività di scoperta e d’apprendimento, è stato per diverso tempo ignorato dai motori di ricerca tradizionali. Invece, è spesso dalle ricerche esplorative che nascono le idee più innovative. Le recenti tecnologie del Semantic Web forniscono le soluzioni che permettono d’implementare dei motori di ricerca capaci di accompagnare gli utenti impegnati in tale tipo di ricerca. Aemoo, motore di ricerca sul quale s’appoggia questa tesi ne è un esempio efficace. A partire da quest’ultimo e sempre con l’aiuto delle tecnologie del Web of Data, questo lavoro si propone di fornire una metodologia che permette di prendere in considerazione la singolarità del profilo di ciascun utente al fine di guidarlo nella sua ricerca esplorativa in modo personalizzato. Il criterio di personalizzazione che abbiamo scelto è comportamentale, ovvero basato sulle decisioni che l’utente prende ad ogni tappa che ritma il processo di ricerca. Implementando un prototipo, abbiamo potuto testare la validità di quest’approccio permettendo quindi all’utente di non essere più solo nel lungo e tortuoso cammino che porta alla conoscenza

Enriching videos with light semantics
This paper describes an ongoing prototypical framework to annotate and retrieve web videos with light semantics. The proposed framework reuses many existing vocabularies along with a video model. The knowledge is captured from three different information spaces (media content, context, document). We also describe ways to extract the semantic content descriptions from the existing usergenerated content using multiple approaches of linguistic processing and Named Entity Recognition, which are later identified with DBpedia resources to establish meanings for the tags. Finally, the implemented prototype is described with multiple search interfaces and retrieval processes. Evaluation on semantic enrichment shows a considerable (50% of videos) improvement in content description
A Semantic Similarity Measure for Expressive Description Logics
A totally semantic measure is presented which is able to calculate a
similarity value between concept descriptions and also between concept
description and individual or between individuals expressed in an expressive
description logic. It is applicable on symbolic descriptions although it uses a
numeric approach for the calculus. Considering that Description Logics stand as
the theoretic framework for the ontological knowledge representation and
reasoning, the proposed measure can be effectively used for agglomerative and

Graph-Query Suggestions for Knowledge Graph Exploration
We consider the task of exploratory search through graph queries on knowledge graphs. We propose to assist the user by expanding the query with intuitive suggestions to provide a more informative (full) query that can retrieve more detailed and relevant answers. To achieve this result, we propose a model that can bridge graph search paradigms with well-established techniques for information-retrieval. Our approach does not require any additional knowledge from the user and builds on principled language modelling approaches. We empirically show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on a large knowledge graph and how our suggestions are able to help build more complete and informative queries
A Functional Model For Information Exploration Systems
Information exploration tasks are inherently complex, ill-structured, and
involve sequences of actions usually spread over many sessions. When exploring
a dataset, users tend to experiment higher degrees of uncertainty, mostly
raised by knowledge gaps concerning the information sources, the task, and the
efficiency of the chosen exploration actions, strategies, and tools in
supporting the task solution process. Provided these concerns, exploration
tools should be designed with the goal of leveraging the mapping between user's
cognitive actions and solution strategies onto the current systems' operations.
However, state-of-the-art systems fail in providing an expressive set of
operations that covers a wide range of exploration problems. There is not a
common understanding of neither which operators are required nor in which ways
they can be used by explorers. In order to mitigate these shortcomings, this
work presents a formal framework of exploration operations expressive enough to
describe at least the majority of state-of-the-art exploration interfaces and
tasks. We also show how the framework leveraged a new evaluation approach,
where we draw precise comparisons between tools concerning the range of

Holistic Model of Website Design Elements that Influence Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness of a website relies foremost on a good first impression which includes the visitor’s perception of the user interface. The focus of this research is to investigate the effects of website design elements on user perception of trustworthiness of a site and provide a set of guidelines for website designers.
The research design is based on Yosef Jabardeen’s (2009) “conceptual framework analysis”. In this research paper, a holistic model is developed to depict the relationships among website design elements and trustworthiness. The model was tested, validated and updated using the results of the repertory grid technique, a process that elicits perceptions about a topic from an individual. For this research, the topic was website trust, the objects were the website design elements, and the constructs were elicited perceptions regarding those website design elements. The repertory grid technique was applied in two stages to a set of participants made up of website users and website designers. Analysis yielded useful information regarding website design associations and correlations of perceptions. The research findings confirmed original suggestions regarding associations and produced an updated, validated model of website design elements. The research indicated that while all design elements had their importance regarding trust, those elements that provided for the function and security of the website rated the highest in importance and expectation.
The validated model will aid website designers in understanding what elements are appealing to the visual senses and conjure credibility and trust. Most importantly, this new understanding may help designers to create websites that attract and retain new users and establishing a successful presence on the Internet
