    Technical Dimensions of Programming Systems

    Get PDF
Programming requires much more than just writing code in a programming language. It is usually done in the context of a stateful environment, by interacting with a system through a graphical user interface. Yet, this wide space of possibilities lacks a common structure for navigation. Work on programming systems fails to form a coherent body of research, making it hard to improve on past work and advance the state of the art. In computer science, much has been said and done to allow comparison of programming languages, yet no similar theory exists for programming systems; we believe that programming systems deserve a theory too. We present a framework of technical dimensions which capture the underlying characteristics of programming systems and provide a means for conceptualizing and comparing them. We identify technical dimensions by examining past influential programming systems and reviewing their design principles, technical capabilities, and styles of user interaction. Technical dimensions capture characteristics that may be studied, compared and advanced independently. This makes it possible to talk about programming systems in a way that can be shared and constructively debated rather than relying solely on personal impressions. Our framework is derived using a qualitative analysis of past programming systems. We outline two concrete ways of using our framework. First, we show how it can analyze a recently developed novel programming system. Then, we use it to identify an interesting unexplored point in the design space of programming systems. Much research effort focuses on building programming systems that are easier to use, accessible to non-experts, moldable and/or powerful, but such efforts are disconnected. They are informal, guided by the personal vision of their authors and thus are only evaluable and comparable on the basis of individual experience using them. By providing foundations for more systematic research, we can help programming systems researchers to stand, at last, on the shoulders of giants

A Design Science Research Approach to Smart and Collaborative Urban Supply Networks

Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

Estudo da remodelagem reversa miocárdica através da análise proteómica do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico

Valve replacement remains as the standard therapeutic option for aortic stenosis patients, aiming at abolishing pressure overload and triggering myocardial reverse remodeling. However, despite the instant hemodynamic benefit, not all patients show complete regression of myocardial hypertrophy, being at higher risk for adverse outcomes, such as heart failure. The current comprehension of the biological mechanisms underlying an incomplete reverse remodeling is far from complete. Furthermore, definitive prognostic tools and ancillary therapies to improve the outcome of the patients undergoing valve replacement are missing. To help abridge these gaps, a combined myocardial (phospho)proteomics and pericardial fluid proteomics approach was followed, taking advantage of human biopsies and pericardial fluid collected during surgery and whose origin anticipated a wealth of molecular information contained therein. From over 1800 and 750 proteins identified, respectively, in the myocardium and in the pericardial fluid of aortic stenosis patients, a total of 90 dysregulated proteins were detected. Gene annotation and pathway enrichment analyses, together with discriminant analysis, are compatible with a scenario of increased pro-hypertrophic gene expression and protein synthesis, defective ubiquitinproteasome system activity, proclivity to cell death (potentially fed by complement activity and other extrinsic factors, such as death receptor activators), acute-phase response, immune system activation and fibrosis. Specific validation of some targets through immunoblot techniques and correlation with clinical data pointed to complement C3 β chain, Muscle Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and the dual-specificity Tyr-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) as potential markers of an incomplete response. In addition, kinase prediction from phosphoproteome data suggests that the modulation of casein kinase 2, the family of IκB kinases, glycogen synthase kinase 3 and DYRK1A may help improve the outcome of patients undergoing valve replacement. Particularly, functional studies with DYRK1A+/- cardiomyocytes show that this kinase may be an important target to treat cardiac dysfunction, provided that mutant cells presented a different response to stretch and reduced ability to develop force (active tension). This study opens many avenues in post-aortic valve replacement reverse remodeling research. In the future, gain-of-function and/or loss-of-function studies with isolated cardiomyocytes or with animal models of aortic bandingdebanding will help disclose the efficacy of targeting the surrogate therapeutic targets. Besides, clinical studies in larger cohorts will bring definitive proof of complement C3, MuRF1 and DYRK1A prognostic value.

Exploring entrepreneurial processes in new markets : towards sustainable food systems

    Get PDF
The aim of this thesis is to explore how entrepreneurial processes work in the creation and development of new markets. New markets are business environments in an early stage of formation and offer an opportunity to change patterns of consumption and production. This makes new markets an interesting subject in society’s quest towards more sustainable food systems. Therefore, we need to better understand the processes through which new markets are created and developed. This thesis studied the emergence of the Swedish meal-kit market, which was initiated to target sustainable values. The empirical material was gathered through a qualitative longitudinal study that was conducted between 2010 and 2018 and the main source of empirical material was interviews with the founders and managers of ten firms. The analysis was performed in a process that iterated between empirics and theory. The thesis contributes to an understanding of the micro-processes involved within and between founders, firms and markets, as new markets are created and developed. The processes are explained as embeddedness, identity work and branding, which all capture the interactions with context. It is argued that to better understand why and how entrepreneurship happens, we need to balance the myopic focus on economic values and also focus on other entrepreneurial outcomes than a firm’s success. Thus, the thesis call for more contextualized perspectives of entrepreneurship in order to understand sustainable change in new markets

Automatic generation of textual descriptions in data-to-text systems using a fuzzy temporal ontology: Application in air quality index data series

In this paper we present a model based on computational intelligence and natural language generation for the automatic generation of textual summaries from numerical data series, aiming to provide insights which help users to understand the relevant information hidden in the data. Our model includes a fuzzy temporal ontology with temporal references which addresses the problem of managing imprecise temporal knowledge, which is relevant in data series. We fully describe a real use case of application in the environmental information systems field, providing linguistic descriptions about the air quality index (AQI), which is a very well-known indicator provided by all meteorological agencies worldwide. We consider two different data sources of real AQI data provided by the official Galician (NW Spain) Meteorology Agency: (i) AQI distribution in the stations of the meteorological observation network and (ii) time series which describe the state and evolution of the AQI in each meteorological station. Both application models were evaluated following the current standards and good practices of manual human expert evaluation of the Natural Language Generation field. Assessment results by two experts meteorologists were very satisfactory, which empirically confirm that the proposed textual descriptions fit this type of data and service both in content and layoutThis research was funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science, Innovation and Universities (grants TIN2017-84796-C2-1-R, PID2020-112623GB-I00, and PDC2021-121072-C21) and the Galician Ministry of Education, University and Professional Training, Spain (grants ED431C2018/29 and ED431G2019/04). DIN Spec 91345 RAMI 4.0 compliant data pipelining: An approach to support data understanding and data acquisition in smart manufacturing environments

    Get PDF
Today, data scientists in the manufacturing domain are confronted with a set of challenges associated to data acquisition as well as data processing including the extraction of valuable in-formation to support both, the work of the manufacturing equipment as well as the manufacturing processes behind it. One essential aspect related to data acquisition is the pipelining, including various commu-nication standards, protocols and technologies to save and transfer heterogenous data. These circumstances make it hard to understand, find, access and extract data from the sources depend-ing on use cases and applications. In order to support this data pipelining process, this thesis proposes the use of the semantic model. The selected semantic model should be able to describe smart manufacturing assets them-selves as well as to access their data along their life-cycle. As a matter of fact, there are many research contributions in smart manufacturing, which already came out with reference architectures or standards for semantic-based meta data descrip-tion or asset classification. This research builds upon these outcomes and introduces a novel se-mantic model-based data pipelining approach using as a basis the Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0).Hoje em dia, os cientistas de dados no domínio da manufatura são confrontados com várias normas, protocolos e tecnologias de comunicação para gravar, processar e transferir vários tipos de dados.

A Comparative Study on Students’ Learning Expectations of Entrepreneurship Education in the UK and China

Entrepreneurship education has become a critical subject in academic research and educational policy design, occupying a central role in contemporary education globally. However, a review of the literature indicates that research on entrepreneurship education is still in a relatively early stage. Little is known about how entrepreneurship education learning is affected by the environmental context to date. Therefore, combining the institutional context and focusing on students’ learning expectations as a novel perspective, the main aim of the thesis is to address the knowledge gap by developing an original conceptual framework to advance understanding of the dynamic learning process of entrepreneurship education through the lens of self-determination theory, thereby providing a basis for advancing understanding of entrepreneurship education. The author adopted an epistemological positivism philosophy and a deductive approach. This study gathered 247 valid questionnaires from the UK (84) and China (163). It requested students to recall their learning expectations before attending their entrepreneurship courses and to assess their perceptions of learning outcomes after taking the entrepreneurship courses. It was found that entrepreneurship education policy is an antecedent that influences students' learning expectations, which is represented in the difference in student autonomy. British students in active learning under a voluntary education policy have higher autonomy than Chinese students in passive learning under a compulsory education policy, thus having higher learning expectations, leading to higher satisfaction. The positive relationship between autonomy and learning expectations is established, which adds a new dimension to self-determination theory. Furthermore, it is also revealed that the change in students’ entrepreneurial intentions before and after their entrepreneurship courses is explained by understanding the process of a business start-up (positive), hands-on business start-up opportunities (positive), students’ actual input (positive) and tutors’ academic qualification (negative). The thesis makes contributions to both theory and practice. The findings have far reaching implications for different parties, including policymakers, educators, practitioners and researchers. Understanding and shaping students' learning expectations is a critical first step in optimising entrepreneurship education teaching and learning. On the one hand, understanding students' learning expectations of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education can help the government with educational interventions and policy reform, as well as improving the quality and delivery of university-based entrepreneurship education. On the other hand, entrepreneurship education can assist students in establishing correct and realistic learning expectations and entrepreneurial conceptions, which will benefit their future entrepreneurial activities and/or employment. An important implication is that this study connects multiple stakeholders by bridging the national-level institutional context, organisational-level university entrepreneurship education, and individual level entrepreneurial learning to promote student autonomy based on an understanding of students' learning expectations. This can help develop graduates with their ability for autonomous learning and autonomous entrepreneurial behaviour. The results of this study help to remind students that it is them, the learners, their expectations and input that can make the difference between the success or failure of their study. This would not only apply to entrepreneurship education but also to other fields of study. One key message from this study is that education can be encouraged and supported but cannot be “forced”. Mandatory entrepreneurship education is not a quick fix for the lack of university students’ innovation and entrepreneurship. More resources must be invested in enhancing the enterprise culture, thus making entrepreneurship education desirable for students
