The Perceptual Genesis of Near Versus Far in Pictorial Stimuli

The experiments reported herein probe the visual cortical mechanisms that control near-far percepts in response to two-dimensional stimuli. Figural contrast is found to be a principal factor for the emergence of percepts of near versus far in pictorial stimuli, especially when stimulus duration is brief. Pictorial factors such as interposition (Experiment 1) and partial occlusion (Experiments 2 and 3) may cooperate or compete with contrast factors, in the manner predicted by the FACADE model. In particular, if the geometrical configuration of an image favors activation of cortical bipole grouping cells, as at the top of aT-junction, then this advantage can cooperate with the contrast of the configuration to facilitate a near-far percept at a lower contrast than at an X-junction. The more balanced bipole competition in the X-junction case takes longer to resolve than in the T-junction case (Experiment 3).Human Frontier Science Program Organization (SF9/98); Defense Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval Research (N00014-92-J-I309, N00014-95-1-0494, N00014-95-1-0657

Testing the reliability of weak lensing cluster detections

We study the reliability of dark-matter halo detections with three different linear filters applied to weak-lensing data. We use ray-tracing in the multiple lens-plane approximation through a large cosmological simulation to construct realizations of cosmic lensing by large-scale structures between redshifts zero and two. We apply the filters mentioned above to detect peaks in the weak-lensing signal and compare them with the true population of dark matter halos present in the simulation. We confirm the stability and performance of a filter optimized for suppressing the contamination by large-scale structure. It allows the reliable detection of dark-matter halos with masses above a few times 1e13 M_sun/h with a fraction of spurious detections below ~10%. For sources at redshift two, 50% of the halos more massive than ~7e13 M_sun/h are detected, and completeness is reached at ~2e14 M_sun/h.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted on A&

Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) for scramjet inlet-isolator investigation

Background-oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique is a recently invented non-intrusive flow diagnostic method which has yet to be fully explored in its capabilities. In this paper, BOS technique has been applied for investigating the general flow field characteristics inside a generic scramjet inlet-isolator with Mach 5 flow. The difficulty in finding the delicate balance between measurement sensitivity and measurement area image focusing has been demonstrated. The differences between direct cross-correlation (DCC) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) raw data processing algorithm have also been demonstrated. As an exploratory study of BOS capability, this paper found that BOS is simple yet robust enough to be used to visualize complex flow in a scramjet inlet in hypersonic flow. However, in this case its quantitative data can be strongly affected by 3-dimensionality thus obscuring the density value with significant errors
