Analysing the Role of Interactivity in User Experience
An experimental investigation into the role of interaction in user experience (UX) with a controlled manipulation of interactivity features (e.g. avatars, interactive video) in a university information website is reported. The more interactive version had better affect and hedonic ratings, even though its perceived usability was worse. Analysis of qualitative data showed users were attracted to the interactive features, although they complained about poor usability. The results of the experiments are discussed to consider the role of interactivity in user experience and the differences between usersâ quantitative judgements of UX and their comments on interactive features which

Beautiful and damned. Combined effect of content quality and social ties on user engagement
User participation in online communities is driven by the intertwinement of
the social network structure with the crowd-generated content that flows along
its links. These aspects are rarely explored jointly and at scale. By looking
at how users generate and access pictures of varying beauty on Flickr, we
investigate how the production of quality impacts the dynamics of online social
systems. We develop a deep learning computer vision model to score images
according to their aesthetic value and we validate its output through
crowdsourcing. By applying it to over 15B Flickr photos, we study for the first
time how image beauty is distributed over a large-scale social system.
Beautiful images are evenly distributed in the network, although only a small
core of people get social recognition for them. To study the impact of exposure
to quality on user engagement, we set up matching experiments aimed at
detecting causality from observational data. Exposure to beauty is
double-edged: following people who produce high-quality content increases one's
probability of uploading better photos; however, an excessive imbalance between
the quality generated by a user and the user's neighbors leads to a decline in
engagement. Our analysis has practical implications for improving link

EXTROVERT OR INTROVERT: HOW PERSONALITY MODERATES THE EFFECT OF VISUAL AESTHETICS ON APP ATTRACTIVENESS IN MOBILE APPLICATIONS
We propose a conceptual model for the context of mobile applications (apps) that explains the relationship between perceived visual aesthetics, perceived visual attractiveness, and intention to download. The model predicts that the aesthetics characteristics influence usersâ perceived app attractiveness and usersâ intention to download the app. It further predicts an interaction effect, where usersâ personality types moderate the effect of aesthetics characteristics on perceived app attractiveness. In other words: differences in aesthetics characteristics explain differences in perceived app attractiveness. However, this effect varies for different types of user personality. We explain the modelâs grounding in theory, describe the design of a laboratory experiment for empirically testing the model, and explain our manipulations of the aesthetics characteristics along its classic and expressive dimensions. Besides presenting our conceptual model and describing out planned experimental design, this study encourages researchers to further investigate how aesthetics characteristics affect intention formation depending on user personality types
The effect of Visual Design Quality on Player Experience Components in Tablet Games
Research in the field of Human Computer Interaction Design indicates that there is a need to develop further methods, tools, and frameworks for the design and evaluation of digital game interfaces. This thesis aims to design, develop, and evaluate two different types of tablet games with varying visual design quality interfaces to examine usersâ perceptions of hedonic quality, visual design, emotions, and game enjoyment in different channels of experience. The design-oriented approach was adopted to combine both creative practice and scientific inquiry in the game design process and empirical evaluation. Hypotheses were formulated to explore the significance of visual design quality in relation to the components of player experience. The study entailed two phases. In the first phase, participatory design methods were employed to design and develop the tablet games encompassing mind-mapping techniques, focus groups, iterative prototyping with multiple cycles of usability testing of user interfaces. In the second phase, survey instruments were applied to collect and analyze data from 111 participants using tablet games as stimuli in a controlled experimental condition. The main contribution of this research is creation of a player experience model, validated in the domain of tablet gaming, to serve as a new theory. This research will allow for game researchers and practitioners to obtain a deeper understanding of the significance of the player experience framework components to create optimal player experience in tablet games. The finding shows that highly attractive game user interfaces were perceived to have higher utility and ease of use. Participants exhibited higher levels of arousal and valence in the high visual design quality interfaces mediated by hedonic quality. Participants who were highly sensitive to visual design did not necessarily derive the highest level of game enjoyment. Participants derived a heightened level of engagement in the arousal channel of experience and the highest level of enjoyment in the flow state. The use of 2.5D graphics and analogous color schemes created a spatial illusion that captivated users' attention. Practitioners are encouraged to design game artifacts with feature sets and mechanics capable of transporting players into the state of flow, as this is the stage where they experience game control, excitement and relaxation in addition to game immersion in the state of arousal
Role of Emotions and Aesthetics in ICT Usage for Underserved Communities: A NeuroIS Investigation
Usability and efficiency has received lot of attention in terms of ICT usage and attitude however non instrumental factors like emotions and aesthetics and their impact on ICT usage attitude and performance has not been extensively tested. Further underserved communities are focused communities that have limitations in terms of formal and functional literacy and technology experience. Aesthetics have been shown to be an important predictor of usage but this has not been tested in underserved communities. Also positive emotions have been linked to greater ICT usage as well as aesthetic experience. Measurement of factors like emotions, aesthetic preferences and ICT usage has so far been restricted to questionnaires however we propose to use objective measures like brain imaging technique (EEG) to supplement existing methodologies. The current paper is a research in progress that addresses potential role of aesthetics and emotions for understanding aesthetic preferences and ICT usages in underserved communities
The Effectiveness Study On User Interface Design (UID) For Local Cosmetic Website By Apllying Theories Of Aesthetics
The aim of this research paper is to figure out userâs feelings about Graphical User Interface design on websites by adopting aesthetic theories. Five aesthetic principles are illustrated in the literature study, which are golden section, dynamic symmetry, Gestalt laws, colour harmony and Goetheâs colour theory. Qualitative research method is conducted as the way to explore userâs behaviour and feelings. The researcher provides two websites, one of which is designed by breaking down all those five theories and another one is designed by following all the aesthetic principles.
Interviews are used as the method for collecting data from interviewees. The interviewees are selected from different department in Kolej Poly-Tech Mara Batu Pahat. Close-ended questionnaire and method is utilized by converting the interview conversation records to text-based data. Highlighting and marking the important and related data, and analysising do them the coding analysis by relating data to corresponding design theories.
The study found that the website design by applying aesthetic theories provided better visual effect and usability to user. It not only visually pleased the user, but also helped users accomplish specific task efficiently and accurately. It is also give satisfaction to user when they look the website

Icon Types, Classical and Expressive Aesthetics, Pleasurable Interaction and Satisfaction with the Process of Semi-literate Users
The hedonic role of icons has been undermined in contemporary human computer interaction research, though users have specifically mentioned the importance of icons while performing aesthetic evaluation of user interfaces. Previous research has also neglected factors like aesthetics and pleasurable interaction while comparing efficiency of same interface elements. In this regard, current study investigates how different types of icons in mobile applications affect the aesthetics and pleasurable interactions of semi-literate users. This study also investigates the extent to which aesthetics and pleasurable interactions affect satisfaction with the process. The study addresses these issues from the theoretical perspectives of metaphor and aesthetics. Significant differences were observed for aesthetics and pleasurable interactions between two different types of icon sets, namely metaphoric and idiomatic. This study suggests that for higher evaluation of aesthetics and pleasurable interaction for semi-literate users, specific icon types are preferred
