The Manifesto on Values and Democracy in Education was released as a document for debate and discussion, but was soon seen by political decision-makers as a document on which education policy could be based. The point of departure of this article is that any document dealing with values, which must serve as a basis for the development of educational policy, should at least provide a clear outline of what values are, be grounded in education philosophy, and clearly reflect the relationship between values and education. A manifesto of this nature should therefore indicate its world view, its anthropological view of the child, the role and function that education should play, the content to be included, a demarcation of what teaching and learning entails and a clear indication of where education should take place. According to our analysis very few of these aspects are covered and at best it could be assumed from the document that the authors lean more towards a sociological orientation to education. It is also inferred that the authors seem to be more inclined towards an eclectic view of values and education resulting in a number of tensions and contradictions emerging in the document. To illustrate the point, two of these theory/praxis problems are discussed. South African Journal of Education Vol.24(1) 2004: 55-6

Education is increasingly being delivered digitally these days, whether due to the COVID-19 pandemic or the growing popularity of MOOCs. The increasing number of participants poses a challenge for institutions to balance didactical and financial demands, especially for exams. The overall goal of this design science research project is to design and evaluate a semi-automatic machine-learning-based scoring system for essays. We focus on the design of a functional software artifact including the required design principles and an exemplary implementation of an algorithm, the optimization of which is, however, not part of this project and subject for future research. Our results show that such a system is suitable for both scoring essay assignments and documenting these scorings. In addition to the software artifact, we document our results using the work of Gregor et al. (2020). This provides a first step towards a design theory for semi-automatic, machine-learning-based scoring systems for essays

The development of writing skills among English majors at two universities in Thailand

Studies on English language education in Asian context have highlighted the importance of teaching writing to students. However, the current English language teaching curriculum in Thailand includes little or no writing which can affect the EFL students to acquire English. Most of the existing literature has compartmentalized issues of EFL writing skills based on discrete L1 writing theories. Therefore, the present study aimed at exploring the multidimensional process of Thai EFL students’ writing skill development at two leading universities in Thailand using a grounded theory design. The data were obtained from seven English majors through class observation, interviews with instructors and students, and document analyses. The data were analysed qualitatively using a systematic design in order to formulate a new theory in relation to factors influencing Thai students’ process of writing development. As a result, a grounded theory of writing skill development was formulated comprising both internal and external factors which explained how the seven English majors learn writing was established. The external factors consisted of the Thai students’ educational context, perceptions towards writing, their teachers’ personality and the availability of English language resources that influenced the internal factors such as students’ learning behaviours. The intervening conditions encompassed teacher’s roles, instructional approaches, the syllabus design and the medium of instruction. The EFL learners’ strategies to develop the skills were realized in four different forms: intrapersonal, interpersonal, production process, and integration of writing knowledge and other learning skills. The present study has formulated a theory, which is Writing Skill Development Theory in learning English as a foreign language. In terms of pedagogical implications, the assumptions in this theory may provide some guidance to the teachers on the improvement of English language teaching curriculum in the process of teaching writing
