    An Enterprise Architecture Framework for Information Management Improvement: Transforming Research into Practice

    This paper reports how a SME in the Engineering Services sector was able to apply the ideas from research on enterprise wide information management to improve the coordination and control of its business processes. An established enterprise wide architecture framework regulated by essential e-business interactions and moderated by a customised portfolio of managerial issues is used to design a roadmap for the SME of future ICT implementations. The results of initial progress along the roadmap showed deliverables were validated and guided and by the three core activities of Business and IT alignment towards e-business transformation from emergent managerial issues

    Undulate : A framework for data-driven software engineering enabling soft computing

    Context. Especially web-facing software systems enable the collection of usage data at a massive scale. At the same time, the scale and scope of software processes have grown substantively. Automated tools are needed to increase the speed and quality of controlling software processes. The usage data has great potential as a driver for software processes. However, research still lacks constructs for collecting, refining and utilising usage data in controlling software processes.Objective. The objective of this paper is to introduce a framework for data-driven software engineering. The UNDULATE framework covers generating, collecting and utilising usage data from software processes and business processes supported by the software produced. In addition, we define the concepts and process of extreme continuous experimentation as an exemplar of a software engineering process.Method. We derive requirements for the framework from the research literature, with a focus on papers inspired by practical problems. In addition, we apply a multilevel modelling language to describe the concepts related to extreme continuous experimentation.Results. We introduce the UNDULATE framework and give requirements and provide an overview of the processes of collecting usage data, augmenting it with additional dimensional data, aggregating the data along the dimensions and computing different metrics based on the data and other metrics.Conclusions. The paper represents significant steps inspired by previous research and practical insight towards standardised processes for data-driven software engineering, enabling the application of soft computing and other methods based on artificial intelligence.Peer reviewe

    Multi-path BGP: motivations and solutions

    Although there are many reasons towards the adoption of a multi-path routing paradigm in the Internet, nowadays the required multi-path support is far from universal. It is mostly limited to some domains that rely on IGP features to improve load distribution in their internal infrastructure or some multi-homed parties that base their load balance on traffic engineering. This chapter explains the motivations for a multi-path routing Internet scheme, commenting the existing alternatives and detailing two new proposals.     Fostering Entrepreneurship: an Empirical study of Entrepreneurial mind set of Engineering and Technology students in Pakistan

    Purpose- Entrepreneurship is usually considered only subject of business students. Due to lack of knowledge of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills engineering and technology education students are left behind in entrepreneurial activities. In order to add to literature on forecasting entrepreneurial intentions this research paper aims to examine levels of Entrepreneurial Intentions amongst Engineering and Technology students in Pakistan. Theoretical Framework- This research is based on Theory of Planned Behavior according to which entrepreneurial intentions are based upon antecedents such as perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, proactive personality, risk taking propensity and attitudes towards entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach – Paper based survey (Entrepreneurial Intention Questionnaire) will be conducted among finale year engineering and technology students (n=150). A comparison will be made with business students participated in entrepreneurship courses (n=150). Analyses- Data will be analyze using SPSS soft ware in computer while correlation, t-test regression will be utilized for finding out the results. SEM or factor analysis may also be utilized for data analysis. Findings – Results should yield similarities and differences among these students participated in entrepreneurship education and those students who did not participated in entrepreneurship education. What factors influence the intentions? Risk taking propensity, motivations and restrictions to entrepreneurship associated with their culture. Practical implications – Policy makers can make policies on the basis of the research to enhance entrepreneurial mind set amongst youth of the region. It will help in socio – economic growth of the region for developing entrepreneurship education policy for engineering and technology education students. Contribution –This study will add to the literature previously researched about antecedent of entrepreneurial inclinations in participation entrepreneurship education and engineering students

    A Framework for Information Architecture for Business Networks

    The concept of Information Architecture (IA) has been independently explored by researchers and practitioners in Information Engineering, Information Systems (ISmanagement, information visualisation and Web site design. However, little has been achieved towards its standardisation within and across these subject domains. To bridge the existing subject divide this study conducts a systematic analysis of publications on frameworks for Information Architecture developed in the field of IS planning and Information Engineering and elicits both common and desirable IA dimensions. It concludes that regardless of their originating subject field, existing IA frameworks are internally focused and have limited effectiveness for dynamic e-business alliances. To address this deficiency, related subject domains such as Systems Theory and Systems Modelling, Web design and virtual team working are explored and ideas are generated for further architectural components such as events, standards, aggregation level and trust that are not supported by existing IAs, but are of high importance for e-business. These are synthesized with the most prevalent IA dimensions identified earlier into a conceptual framework for IA for electronically mediated business networks, called FEBus ffra. network for Information Architecture for Electronically mediated Business networks. The structural viability and usability of the proposed analytical vehicle are evaluated over the period 2001-2003 using a triangulation of a Delphi study, an electronic survey, and evaluation interviews. The participants, representing three self-selecting samples of experienced UK academics and practitioners interested in IA, confirmed the need for an IA framework for e-business alliances and proposed and proved the scope, merits and limitations of the tool. Their views formed the basis for some amendments to the framework and for recommendations for future research. This thesis presents an original contribution to IA knowledge through the comprehensive critical analysis of frameworks on IA and the development of a set of fundamental requirements for IA for e-business environments. Its importance is also seen in the synthesis of the research on 1A conducted in different subject areas. The architectural tool built as an extension of the reviewed IA works constitutes another original aspect of this research. Finally, the novel multi-method evaluation approach employed in the study and the critical examination of its operability, present an advancement of existing knowledge on methodological diversity in IS research

    Game development is an interdisciplinary concept that embraces artistic, software engineering, management, and business disciplines. This research facilitates a better understanding of important dimensions of digital game development methodology. Game development is considered as one of the most complex tasks in software engineering. The increased popularity of digital games, the challenges faced by game development organizations in developing quality games, and high competition in the digital game industry demand a game development maturity assessment. Consequently, this study presents a Digital Game Maturity Model to evaluate the current development methodology in an organization. The framework of this model consists of assessment questionnaires, a performance scale, and a rating method. The main goal of the questionnaires is to collect information about current processes and practices. In general, this research contributes towards formulating a comprehensive and unified strategy for game development maturity evaluation. Two case studies were conducted and their assessment results reported. These demonstrate the level of maturity of current development practices in two organizations

    Integration of e-business strategy for multi-lifecycle production systems

    Internet use has grown exponentially on the last few years becoming a global communication and business resource. Internet-based business, or e-Business will truly affect every sector of the economy in ways that today we can only imagine. The manufacturing sector will be at the forefront of this change. This doctoral dissertation provides a scientific framework and a set of novel decision support tools for evaluating, modeling, and optimizing the overall performance of e-Business integrated multi-lifecycle production systems. The characteristics of this framework include environmental lifecycle study, environmental performance metrics, hyper-network model of integrated e-supply chain networks, fuzzy multi-objective optimization method, discrete-event simulation approach, and scalable enterprise environmental management system design. The dissertation research reveals that integration of e-Business strategy into production systems can alter current industry practices along a pathway towards sustainability, enhancing resource productivity, improving cost efficiencies and reducing lifecycle environmental impacts. The following research challenges and scholarly accomplishments have been addressed in this dissertation: Identification and analysis of environmental impacts of e-Business. A pioneering environmental lifecycle study on the impact of e-Business is conducted, and fuzzy decision theory is further applied to evaluate e-Business scenarios in order to overcome data uncertainty and information gaps; Understanding, evaluation, and development of environmental performance metrics. Major environmental performance metrics are compared and evaluated. A universal target-based performance metric, developed jointly with a team of industry and university researchers, is evaluated, implemented, and utilized in the methodology framework; Generic framework of integrated e-supply chain network. The framework is based on the most recent research on large complex supply chain network model, but extended to integrate demanufacturers, recyclers, and resellers as supply chain partners. Moreover, The e-Business information network is modeled as a overlaid hypernetwork layer for the supply chain; Fuzzy multi-objective optimization theory and discrete-event simulation methods. The solution methods deal with overall system parameter trade-offs, partner selections, and sustainable decision-making; Architecture design for scalable enterprise environmental management system. This novel system is designed and deployed using knowledge-based ontology theory, and XML techniques within an agent-based structure. The implementation model and system prototype are also provided. The new methodology and framework have the potential of being widely used in system analysis, design and implementation of e-Business enabled engineering systems

    Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Metrology Model (CPM3) for Sculptured Surfaces - Turbine Blade Application

    Cyber-Physical Manufacturing (CPM) and digital manufacturing represent the key elements for implementation of Industry 4.0 framework. Worldwide, Industry 4.0 becomes national research strategy in the field of engineering for the following ten years. The International Conference USA-EU-Far East-Serbia Manufacturing Summit was held from 31st May to 2nd June 2016 in Belgrade, Serbia. The result of the conference was the development of Industry 4.0 Model for Serbia as a framework for New Industrial Policy - Horizon 2020/2030. Implementation of CPM in manufacturing systems generates " smart factory". Products, resources, and processes within smart factory are realized and controlled through CPM model. This leads to significant advantages with respect to high product/process quality, real-time applications, savings in resources consumption, as well as, lower costs in comparison with classical manufacturing systems. Smart factory is designed in accordance with sustainable and service-oriented best business practices/models. It is based on optimization, flexibility, self-adaptability and learning, fault tolerance, and risk management. Complete manufacturing digitalization and digital factory are the key elements of Industry 4.0 Program. In collaborative research, which we carry out in the field of quality control and manufacturing metrology at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Serbia and at Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas, Austin in USA, three research areas are defined: (a) Digital manufacturing - towards Cloud Manufacturing Systems (as a basis for CPS), in which quality and metrology represent integral parts of process optimization based on Taguchi model, and (sic) Cyber-Physical Quality Model (CPQM) - our approach, in which we have developed and tested intelligent model for prismatic parts inspection planning on CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine). The third research area directs our efforts to the development of framework for Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Metrology Model (CPM3). CPM3 framework will be based on integration of digital product metrology information through metrology features recognition, and generation of global/local inspection plan for free-form surfaces; we will illustrate our approach using turbine blade example.     Re-distributed manufacturing and the food-water-energy nexus: opportunities and challenges

    Addressing the intersection of two important emerging research areas, re-distributed manufacturing (RDM) and the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus, this work combines insights from engineering, business and policy perspectives and explores opportunities and challenges towards a more localised and sustainable food system. Analysis centred on two specific food products, namely bread and tomato paste reveals that the feasibility and potential of RDM vary with the type of food product and the supply chain (SC) components. Physically, energy efficiency, water consumption and reduction of waste and carbon footprint may be affected by scale and location of production activities and potentials of industrial symbiosis. From the business perspective, novel products, new markets and new business models are expected in order for food RDM to penetrate within the established food industry. Studies on policies, through the lens of public procurement, call for solid evidence of envisioned environmental, social and economic benefits of a more localised food system.
