    A Scalable and Secure System Architecture for Smart Buildings

    Recent years has seen profound changes in building technologies both in Europe and worldwide. With the emergence of Smart Grid and Smart City concepts, the Smart Building has attracted considerable attention and rapid development. The introduction of novel information and communication technologies (ICT) enables an optimized resource utilization while improving the building performance and occupants' satisfaction over a broad spectrum of operations. However, literature and industry have drawn attention to certain barriers and challenges that inhibit its universal adoption. The Smart Building is a cyber-physical system, which as a whole is more than the sum of its parts. The heterogeneous combination of systems, processes, and practices requires a multidisciplinary research. This work proposes and validates a systems engineering approach to the investigation of the identified challenges and the development of a viable architecture for the future Smart Building. Firstly, a data model for the building management system (BMS) enables a semantic abstraction of both the ICT and the building construction. A high-level application programming interface (API) facilitates the creation of generic management algorithms and external applications, independent from each Smart Building instance, promoting the intelligence portability and lowering the cost. Moreover, the proposed architecture ensures the scalability regardless of the occupant activities and the complexity of the optimization algorithms. Secondly, a real-time message-oriented middleware, as a distributed embedded architecture within the building, empowers the interoperability of the ICT devices and networks and their integration into the BMS. The middleware scales to any building construction regardless of the devices' performance and connectivity limitations, while a secure architecture ensures the integrity of data and operations. An extensive performance and energy efficiency study validates the proposed design. A "building-in-the-loop" emulation system, based on discrete-event simulation, virtualizes the Smart Building elements (e.g., loads, storage, generation, sensors, actuators, users, etc.). The high integration with the message-oriented middleware keeps the BMS agnostic to the virtual nature of the emulated instances. Its cooperative multitasking and immerse parallelism allow the concurrent emulation of hundreds of elements in real time. The virtualization facilitates the development of energy management strategies and financial viability studies on the exact building and occupant activities without a prior investment in the necessary infrastructure. This work concludes with a holistic system evaluation using a case study of a university building as a practical retrofitting estimation. It illustrates the system deployment, and highlights how a currently under development energy management system utilizes the BMS and its data analytics for demand-side management applications

    Batteries are widely applied to the energy storage and power supply in portable electronics, transportation, power systems, communication networks, etc. They are particularly demanded in the emerging technologies of vehicle electrification and renewable energy integration for a green and sustainable society. To meet various voltage, power, and energy requirements in large-scale applications, multiple battery cells have to be connected in series and/or parallel. While battery technology has advanced significantly in the past decade, existing battery management systems (BMSs) mainly focus on state monitoring and control of battery systems packed in fixed configurations. In fixed configurations, though, the battery system performance is in principle limited by the weakest cells, which can leave large parts severely underutilized. Allowing dynamic reconfiguration of battery cells, on the other hand, allows individual and flexible manipulation of the battery system at cell, module, and pack levels, which may open up a new paradigm for battery management. Following this trend, this paper provides an overview of next-generation BMSs featuring dynamic reconfiguration. Motivated by numerous potential benefits of reconfigurable battery systems (RBSs), the hardware designs, management principles, and optimization algorithms for RBSs are sequentially and systematically discussed. Theoretical and practical challenges during the design and implementation of RBSs are highlighted in the end to stimulate future research and development

    Implementation of SiC Power Electronics for Green Energy Based Electrification of Transportation

    Increase in greenhouse gas emission poses a threat to the quality of air thus threatening the future of living beings on earth. A large part of the emission is produced by transport vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) are a great solution to this threat. They will completely replace the high usage of hydrocarbons in the transport sector. Energy efficiency and reduced local pollution can also be expected with full implementation of electrification of transportation. However, the current grid is not prepared to take the power load of EV charging if it were to happen readily. Moreover, critics are doubtful about the long-term sustainability of EVs in terms of different supply chain issues. The first step for tackling this problem from a research perspective was to do a thorough review of the details of charging in modern day grid. The downsides and lack of futuristic vision. Findings showed that implementing end to end DC based on green energy aided by SiC power electronics. To prove the findings analysis and modelling was done for SiC based charging network. A similar approach was implemented in EV powertrain development. The implementation of SiC power electronics in charging network showed lesser losses, higher thermal conductivity, lesser charging time. The effect on long term battery health and additional circuit was also observed. The cost of production can be reduced by volume manufacturing that has been discussed. In powertrain analysis and simulation the loss and heat reduction one shown on a component-by-component basis. Therefore, this research proposes a Silicon Carbide based end to end DC infrastructure based completely on solar and wind power. The pollution will further be reduced, and energy demands will be met
