Using social media big data for tourist demand forecasting: A new machine learning analytical approach
This study explores the possibility of using a machine learning approach to analysing social media big data for tourism demand forecasting. We demonstrate how to extract the main topics discussed on Twitter and calculate the mean sentiment score for each topic as the proxy of the general attitudes towards those topics, which are then used for predicting tourist arrivals. We choose Sydney, Australia as the case for testing the performance and validity of our proposed forecasting framework. The study reveals key topics discussed in social media that can be used to predict tourist arrivals in Sydney. The study has both theoretical implications for tourist behavioural research and practical implications for destination marketing
Big data for monitoring educational systems
This report considers “how advances in big data are likely to transform the context and methodology of monitoring educational systems within a long-term perspective (10-30 years) and impact the evidence based policy development in the sector”, big data are “large amounts of different types of data produced with high velocity from a high number of various types of sources.” Five independent experts were commissioned by Ecorys, responding to themes of: students' privacy, educational equity and efficiency, student tracking, assessment and skills. The experts were asked to consider the “macro perspective on governance on educational systems at all levels from primary, secondary education and tertiary – the latter covering all aspects of tertiary from further, to higher, and to VET”, prioritising primary and secondary levels of education
Towards the cloudification of the social networks analytics
In the last years, with the increase of the available data from social networks and the rise of big data technologies, social data has emerged as one of the most profitable market for companies to increase their benefits. Besides, social computation scientists see such data as a vast ocean of information to study modern human societies. Nowadays, enterprises and researchers are developing their own mining tools in house, or they are outsourcing their social media mining needs to specialised companies with its consequent economical cost. In this paper, we present the first cloud computing service to facilitate the deployment of social media analytics applications to allow data practitioners to use social mining tools as a service. The main advantage of this service is the possibility to run different queries at the same time and combine their results in real time. In recent years we have seen an increase in the amount of statistics in society describing different phenomena based on so called Big Data. The term Big Data is used for a variety of data as explained in the report, many of them characterized not just by their large volume, but also by their variety and velocity, the organic way in which they are created, and the new types of processes needed to analyze them and make inference from them. The change in the nature of the new types of data, their availability, the way in which they are collected, and disseminated are fundamental. The change constitutes a paradigm shift for survey research.There is a great potential in Big Data but there are some fundamental challenges that have to be resolved before its full potential can be realized. In this report we give examples of different types of Big Data and their potential for survey research. We also describe the Big Data process and discuss its main challenges
Big data analytics:Computational intelligence techniques and application areas
Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment

Towards evaluation design for smart city development
Smart city developments integrate digital, human, and physical systems in the built environment. With growing urbanization and widespread developments, identifying suitable evaluation methodologies is important. Case-study research across five UK cities - Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Milton Keynes and Peterborough - revealed that city evaluation approaches were principally project-focused with city-level evaluation plans at early stages. Key challenges centred on selecting suitable evaluation methodologies to evidence urban value and outcomes, addressing city authority requirements. Recommendations for evaluation design draw on urban studies and measurement frameworks, capitalizing on big data opportunities and developing appropriate, valid, credible integrative approaches across projects, programmes and city-level developments
Tracking the History and Evolution of Entities: Entity-centric Temporal Analysis of Large Social Media Archives
How did the popularity of the Greek Prime Minister evolve in 2015? How did
the predominant sentiment about him vary during that period? Were there any
controversial sub-periods? What other entities were related to him during these
periods? To answer these questions, one needs to analyze archived documents and
data about the query entities, such as old news articles or social media
archives. In particular, user-generated content posted in social networks, like
Twitter and Facebook, can be seen as a comprehensive documentation of our
society, and thus meaningful analysis methods over such archived data are of
immense value for sociologists, historians and other interested parties who
want to study the history and evolution of entities and events. To this end, in
this paper we propose an entity-centric approach to analyze social media
archives and we define measures that allow studying how entities were reflected
in social media in different time periods and under different aspects, like
popularity, attitude, controversiality, and connectedness with other entities.
A case study using a large Twitter archive of four years illustrates the
insights that can be gained by such an entity-centric and multi-aspect
