Jeeg: Temporal Constraints for the Synchronization of Concurrent Objects
We introduce Jeeg, a dialect of Java based on a declarative replacement of the synchronization mechanisms of Java that results in a complete decoupling of the 'business' and the 'synchronization' code of classes. Synchronization constraints in Jeeg are expressed in a linear temporal logic which allows to effectively limit the occurrence of the inheritance anomaly that commonly affects concurrent object oriented languages. Jeeg is inspired by the current trend in aspect oriented languages. In a Jeeg program the sequential and concurrent aspects of object behaviors are decoupled: specified separately by the programmer these are then weaved together by the Jeeg compiler
Media Presence and Inner Presence: The Sense of Presence in Virtual Reality Technologies
Abstract. Presence is widely accepted as the key concept to be considered in any research involving human interaction with Virtual Reality (VR). Since its original description, the concept of presence has developed over the past decade to be considered by many researchers as the essence of any experience in a virtual environment. The VR generating systems comprise two main parts: a technological component and a psychological experience. The different relevance given to them produced two different but coexisting visions of presence: the rationalist and the psychological/ecological points of view. The rationalist point of view considers a VR system as a collection of specific machines with the necessity of the inclusion \ud

Given its key role and the rate at which new approaches to understanding and examining presence are appearing, this chapter draws together current research on presence to provide an up to date overview of the most widely accepted approaches to its understanding and measurement

Towards an aspect weaving BPEL engine
This position paper proposes the use of dynamic aspects and
the visitor design pattern to obtain a highly configurable and
extensible BPEL engine. Using these two techniques, the
core of this infrastructural software can be customised to
meet new requirements and add features such as debugging,
execution monitoring, or changing to another Web Service
selection policy. Additionally, it can easily be extended to
cope with customer-specific BPEL extensions. We propose
the use of dynamic aspects not only on the engine itself
but also on the workflow in order to tackle the problems of
Web Service hot deployment and hot fixes to long running
processes. In this way, composing aWeb Service "on-the-fly"
means weaving its choreography interface into the workflow
Multi-Dimensional Inheritance
In this paper, we present an alternative approach to multiple inheritance for
typed feature structures. In our approach, a feature structure can be
associated with several types coming from different hierarchies (dimensions).
In case of multiple inheritance, a type has supertypes from different
hierarchies. We contrast this approach with approaches based on a single type
hierarchy where a feature structure has only one unique most general type, and
multiple inheritance involves computation of greatest lower bounds in the
hierarchy. The proposed approach supports current linguistic analyses in
constraint-based formalisms like HPSG, inheritance in the lexicon, and
knowledge representation for NLP systems. Finally, we show that
multi-dimensional inheritance hierarchies can be compiled into a Prolog term
representation, which allows to compute the conjunction of two types

Comparing Tag Scheme Variations Using an Abstract Machine Generator
In this paper we study, in the context of a WAM-based abstract machine for Prolog, how variations in the encoding of type information in tagged words and in their associated basic operations impact performance and memory usage. We use a high-level language to specify encodings and the associated operations. An automatic generator constructs both the abstract machine using this encoding and the associated Prolog-to-byte code compiler. Annotations in this language make it possible to impose constraints on the final representation of tagged words, such as the effectively addressable space (fixing, for example, the word size of the target processor /architecture), the layout of the tag and value bits inside the tagged word, and how the basic operations are implemented. We evaluate large number of combinations of the different parameters in two scenarios: a) trying to obtain an optimal general-purpose abstract machine and b) automatically generating a specially-tuned abstract machine for a particular program. We conclude that we are able to automatically generate code featuring all the optimizations present in a hand-written, highly-optimized abstract machine and we canal so obtain emulators with larger addressable space and better performance
Towards an Intelligent Database System Founded on the SP Theory of Computing and Cognition
The SP theory of computing and cognition, described in previous publications,
is an attractive model for intelligent databases because it provides a simple
but versatile format for different kinds of knowledge, it has capabilities in
artificial intelligence, and it can also function like established database
models when that is required.
This paper describes how the SP model can emulate other models used in
database applications and compares the SP model with those other models. The
artificial intelligence capabilities of the SP model are reviewed and its
relationship with other artificial intelligence systems is described. Also
considered are ways in which current prototypes may be translated into an
'industrial strength' working system
