Implementation & Evaluation of an Interprofessional TeamSTEPPS Simulation Program
Joint Commission 2015 sentinel event data identified communication as the third leading cause of all medical errors in the United States. The complex delivery of health care requires teamwork; however, members of the health care team are rarely trained together and often come from different educational and cultural backgrounds. To improve communication, an interprofessional high fidelity simulation-based program that uses the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality TeamSTEPPS® 2.0 Framework and associated communication tools was implemented and evaluated in a medium sized acute care community hospital. This quantitative descriptive correlational study addresses two research questions: (1) how does the implementation of a TeamSTEPPS® Simulation Program impact the communication between members of the interprofessional team? (2) How does the implementation of a TeamSTEPPS® Simulation Program impact individual’s attitudes, knowledge, and skills towards teamwork
Simulation in manufacturing and business: A review
Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier B.V.This paper reports the results of a review of simulation applications published within peer-reviewed literature between 1997 and 2006 to provide an up-to-date picture of the role of simulation techniques within manufacturing and business. The review is characterised by three factors: wide coverage, broad scope of the simulation techniques, and a focus on real-world applications. A structured methodology was followed to narrow down the search from around 20,000 papers to 281. Results include interesting trends and patterns. For instance, although discrete event simulation is the most popular technique, it has lower stakeholder engagement than other techniques, such as system dynamics or gaming. This is highly correlated with modelling lead time and purpose. Considering application areas, modelling is mostly used in scheduling. Finally, this review shows an increasing interest in hybrid modelling as an approach to cope with complex enterprise-wide systems
Measuring performance in healthcare
Hospitals invest in process management and process optimization from an organizational and patient perspective to increase efficiency and simultaneously the quality of their operations. Consequently, the use of process-oriented performance measurement systems gains importance. This study contributes to the development of a dashboard for the process of hip surgery using a case study design. We integrate strategic goals of hospital management and different stakeholders with the analysis of Business Process Management and Hospital Information Systems’ data. Process-oriented KPIs were integrated into the dashboard using a three-step approach. Dashboards enable healthcare organizations to put process-oriented performance measurement into practice

Which is more appropriate: a multi-perspective comparison between systems dynamics and discrete event simulation
System Dynamics (SD) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) are two established simulation tech-niques for simulating the dynamics of a system. Both have been widely used in modelling business de-cisions. This paper presents meta-comparison between the two approaches based on literature survey. Upon reviewing the existing literature it has been identified that existing comparisons could be classi-fied under three main perspectives: Systems perspective, Problems perspective and Methodology per-spective. The nature of system and nature of problem have been argued as primary factors for decid-ing modelling methodology. Therefore SD and DES comparisons have been classified on the basis of systems, problems and inherent aspects and capabilities of both modelling methods. It has been ar-gued that development of sound models need fit between system, problem and methodology. The suc-cess of model depends on it’s technical soundness as well as it’s successful implementation. Designing for designers: Towards the development of accessible ICT products and services using the VERITAS framework
Among key design practices which contribute to the development of inclusive ICT products and services is user testing with people with disabilities. Traditionally, this involves partial or minimal user testing through the usage of standard heuristics, employing external assisting devices, and the direct feedback of impaired users. However, efficiency could be improved if designers could readily analyse the needs of their target audience. The VERITAS framework simulates and systematically analyses how users with various impairments interact with the use of ICT products and services. Findings show that the VERITAS framework is useful to designers, offering an intuitive approach to inclusive design.The work presented in this article forms part of VERITAS, which is funded by the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme (FP7) (grant agreement # 247765 FP7-ICT-2009.7.2)

Application of fuzzy simulation for evaluating enterprise application integration in healthcare organisations
Healthcare organisations have focused on the latest technological innovations to overcome their organisational and clinical problems. The information systems were not developed in a cordinated way but evolved as autonomous and hetrogeneous systems. Thus, the integration of these systems represents one of the most urgent priorities of healthcare organisations that allow the whole organisation to meet the increasing clinical, organisational and managerial needs. Recently, technological developments have emerged in the area of integration technology such as Enterprise Application Integration (EAI). This provides significant benefits to organisations to overcome the integration problem. This work therefore evaluates the adoption of EAI in healthcare organisations. In doing so, Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) simulation is used to demonstrate the causal inter-relationships between the EAI adoption factors. FCM simulation provides insights into better understanding about interdependencies of the factors that influence EAI adoption in healthcare organisations
