BeSpaceD: Towards a Tool Framework and Methodology for the Specification and Verification of Spatial Behavior of Distributed Software Component Systems
In this report, we present work towards a framework for modeling and checking
behavior of spatially distributed component systems. Design goals of our
framework are the ability to model spatial behavior in a component oriented,
simple and intuitive way, the possibility to automatically analyse and verify
systems and integration possibilities with other modeling and verification
tools. We present examples and the verification steps necessary to prove
properties such as range coverage or the absence of collisions between
components and technical details
ToPoliNano: Nanoarchitectures Design Made Real
Many facts about emerging nanotechnologies are yet to be assessed. There are still major concerns, for instance, about maximum achievable device density, or about which architecture is best fit for a specific application. Growing complexity requires taking into account many aspects of technology, application and architecture at the same time. Researchers face problems that are not new per se, but are now subject to very different constraints, that need to be captured by design tools. Among the emerging nanotechnologies, two-dimensional nanowire based arrays represent promising nanostructures, especially for massively parallel computing architectures. Few attempts have been done, aimed at giving the possibility to explore architectural solutions, deriving information from extensive and reliable nanoarray characterization. Moreover, in the nanotechnology arena there is still not a clear winner, so it is important to be able to target different technologies, not to miss the next big thing. We present a tool, ToPoliNano, that enables such a multi-technological characterization in terms of logic behavior, power and timing performance, area and layout constraints, on the basis of specific technological and topological descriptions. This tool can aid the design process, beside providing a comprehensive simulation framework for DC and timing simulations, and detailed power analysis. Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent
construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the
state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing
progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications,
and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey
the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto
standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad
set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric
and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees,
active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously
serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By
looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open
challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific
investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that
often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and
Is SLAM solved
Termination Detection of Local Computations
Contrary to the sequential world, the processes involved in a distributed
system do not necessarily know when a computation is globally finished. This
paper investigates the problem of the detection of the termination of local
computations. We define four types of termination detection: no detection,
detection of the local termination, detection by a distributed observer,
detection of the global termination. We give a complete characterisation
(except in the local termination detection case where a partial one is given)
for each of this termination detection and show that they define a strict
hierarchy. These results emphasise the difference between computability of a
distributed task and termination detection. Furthermore, these
characterisations encompass all standard criteria that are usually formulated :
topological restriction (tree, rings, or triangu- lated networks ...),
topological knowledge (size, diameter ...), and local knowledge to distinguish
nodes (identities, sense of direction). These results are now presented as
corollaries of generalising theorems. As a very special and important case, the
techniques are also applied to the election problem. Though given in the model
of local computations, these results can give qualitative insight for similar
results in other standard models. The necessary conditions involve graphs
covering and quasi-covering; the sufficient conditions (constructive local
computations) are based upon an enumeration algorithm of Mazurkiewicz and a
stable properties detection algorithm of Szymanski, Shi and Prywes
The STAR MAPS-based PiXeL detector
The PiXeL detector (PXL) for the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) of the STAR
experiment at RHIC is the first application of the state-of-the-art thin
Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) technology in a collider environment.
Custom built pixel sensors, their readout electronics and the detector
mechanical structure are described in detail. Selected detector design aspects
and production steps are presented. The detector operations during the three
years of data taking (2014-2016) and the overall performance exceeding the
design specifications are discussed in the conclusive sections of this paper
High Lundquist Number Simulations of Parker\u27s Model of Coronal Heating: Scaling and Current Sheet Statistics Using Heterogeneous Computing Architectures
Parker\u27s model [Parker, Astrophys. J., 174, 499 (1972)] is one of the most discussed mechanisms for coronal heating and has generated much debate. We have recently obtained new scaling results for a 2D version of this problem suggesting that the heating rate becomes independent of resistivity in a statistical steady state [Ng and Bhattacharjee, Astrophys. J., 675, 899 (2008)]. Our numerical work has now been extended to 3D using high resolution MHD numerical simulations. Random photospheric footpoint motion is applied for a time much longer than the correlation time of the motion to obtain converged average coronal heating rates. Simulations are done for different values of the Lundquist number to determine scaling. In the high-Lundquist number limit (S \u3e 1000), the coronal heating rate obtained is consistent with a trend that is independent of the Lundquist number, as predicted by previous analysis and 2D simulations. We will present scaling analysis showing that when the dissipation time is comparable or larger than the correlation time of the random footpoint motion, the heating rate tends to become independent of Lundquist number, and that the magnetic energy production is also reduced significantly. We also present a comprehensive reprogramming of our simulation code to run on NVidia graphics processing units using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) and report code performance on several large scale heterogenous machines
Uncovering operational interactions in genetic networks using asynchronous boolean dynamics
To analyze and gain intuition on the mechanisms of complex systems of large dimensions, one strategy is to simplify the model by identifying a reduced system, in the form of a smaller set of variables and interactions that still capture specific properties of the system. For large models of biological networks, the diagram of interactions is often well represented by a Boolean model with a family of logical rules. The state space of a Boolean model is finite, and its asynchronous dynamics are fully described by a transition graph in the state space. In this context, a method will be developed for identifying the active or operational interactions responsible for a given dynamic behaviour. The first step in this procedure is the decomposition of the asynchronous transition graph into its strongly connected components, to obtain a ``reduced'' and hierarchically organized graph of transitions. The second step consists of the identification of a partial graph of interactions and a sub-family of logical rules that remain operational in a given region of the state space. This model reduction method and its usefulness are illustrated by an application to a model of programmed cell death. The method identifies two mechanisms used by the cell to respond to death-receptor stimulation and decide between the survival or apoptotic pathways
