    Towards case-based parsing : are chunks reliable indicators for syntax trees?

    This paper presents an approach to the question whether it is possible to construct a parser based on ideas from case-based reasoning. Such a parser would employ a partial analysis of the input sentence to select a (nearly) complete syntax tree and then adapt this tree to the input sentence. The experiments performed on German data from the TĂźba-D/Z treebank and the KaRoPars partial parser show that a wide range of levels of generality can be reached, depending on which types of information are used to determine the similarity between input sentence and training sentences. The results are such that it is possible to construct a case-based parser. The optimal setting out of those presented here need to be determined empirically

    An Efficient Distribution of Labor in a Two Stage Robust Interpretation Process

    Although Minimum Distance Parsing (MDP) offers a theoretically attractive solution to the problem of extragrammaticality, it is often computationally infeasible in large scale practical applications. In this paper we present an alternative approach where the labor is distributed between a more restrictive partial parser and a repair module. Though two stage approaches have grown in popularity in recent years because of their efficiency, they have done so at the cost of requiring hand coded repair heuristics. In contrast, our two stage approach does not require any hand coded knowledge sources dedicated to repair, thus making it possible to achieve a similar run time advantage over MDP without losing the quality of domain independence.Comment: 9 pages, 1 Postscript figure, uses aclap.sty and psfig.tex, In Proceedings of EMNLP 199

    Who watches the watchers: Validating the ProB Validation Tool

    Over the years, ProB has moved from a tool that complemented proving, to a development environment that is now sometimes used instead of proving for applications, such as exhaustive model checking or data validation. This has led to much more stringent requirements on the integrity of ProB.     Automatic C library wrapping Ctypes from the trenches

    At some point of time many Python developers at least in computational science will face the situation that they want to interface some natively compiled library from Python. For binding native code to Python by now a larger variety of tools and technologies are available. This paper focuses on wrapping shared C libraries, using Python's default Ctypes. Particularly tools to ease the process (by using code generation) and some best practises will be stressed. The paper will try to tell a step by step story of the wrapping and development process, that should be transferable to similar problems

    Automatic visualization and control of arbitrary numerical simulations

Abstract: Visualization of numerical simulation data has become a cornerstone for many industries and research areas today. There exists a large amount of software support, which is usually tied to specific problem domains or simulation platforms. However, numerical simulations have commonalities in the building blocks of their descriptions (e. g., dimensionality, range constraints, sample frequency). Instead of encoding these descriptions and their meaning into software architecures we propose to base their interpretation and evaluation on a data-centric model. This approach draws much inspiration from work of the IEEE Simulation Interoperability Standards Group as currently applied in distributed (military) training and simulation scenarios and seeks to extend those ideas. By using an extensible self-describing protocol format, simulation users as well as simulation-code providers would be able to express the meaning of their data even if no access to the underlying source code was available or if new and unforseen use cases emerge. A protocol definition will allow simulation-domain experts to describe constraints that can be used for automatically creating appropriate visualizations of simulation data and control interfaces. Potentially, this will enable leveraging innovations on both the simulation and visualization side of the problem continuum. We envision the design and development of algorithms and software tools for the automatic visualization of complex data from numerical simulations executed on a wide variety of platforms (e. g., remote HPC systems, local many-core or GPU-based systems). We also envisage using this automatically gathered information to control (or steer) the simulation while it is running, as well as providing the ability for fine-tuning representational aspects of the visualizations produced
