    A cloud-based tool for sentiment analysis in reviews about restaurants on TripAdvisor

    The tourism industry has been promoting its products and services based on the reviews that people often write on travel websites like TripAdvisor.com, Booking.com and other platforms like these. These reviews have a profound effect on the decision making process when evaluating which places to visit, such as which restaurants to book, etc. In this contribution is presented a cloud based software tool for the massive analysis of this social media data (TripAdvisor.com). The main characteristics of the tool developed are: i) the ability to aggregate data obtained from social media; ii) the possibility of carrying out combined analyses of both people and comments; iii) the ability to detect the sense (positive, negative or neutral) in which the comments rotate, quantifying the degree to which they are positive or negative, as well as predicting behaviour patterns from this information; and iv) the ease of doing everything in the same application (data downloading, pre-processing, analysis and visualisation).     Due to the huge availability of documents in digital form, and the deception possibility raise bound to the essence of digital documents and the way they are spread, the authorship attribution problem has constantly increased its relevance. Nowadays, authorship attribution,for both information retrieval and analysis, has gained great importance in the context of security, trust and copyright preservation. This work proposes an innovative multi-agent driven machine learning technique that has been developed for authorship attribution. By means of a preprocessing for word-grouping and time-period related analysis of the common lexicon, we determine a bias reference level for the recurrence frequency of the words within analysed texts, and then train a Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBPNN)-based classifier to identify the correct author. The main advantage of the proposed approach lies in the generality of the semantic analysis, which can be applied to different contexts and lexical domains, without requiring any modification.     CLOUD-BASED MACHINE LEARNING AND SENTIMENT ANALYSIS

    The role of a Data Scientist is becoming increasingly ubiquitous as companies and institutions see the need to gain additional insights and information from data to make better decisions to improve the quality-of-service delivery to customers. This thesis document contains three aspects of data science projects aimed at improving tools and techniques used in analyzing and evaluating data. The first research study involved the use of a standard cybersecurity dataset and cloud-based auto-machine learning algorithms were applied to detect vulnerabilities in the network traffic data. The performance of the algorithms was measured and compared using standard evaluation metrics. The second research study involved the use of text-mining social media, specifically Reddit. We mined up to 100,000 comments in multiple subreddits and tested for hate speech via a custom designed version of the Python Vader sentiment analysis package. Our work integrated standard sentiment analysis with Hatebase.org and we demonstrate our new method can better detect hate speech in social media. Following sentiment analysis and hate speech detection, in the third research project, we applied statistical techniques in evaluating the significant difference in text analytics, specifically the sentiment-categories for both lexicon-based software and cloud-based tools. We compared the three big cloud providers, AWS, Azure, and GCP with the standard python Vader sentiment analysis library. We utilized statistical analysis to determine a significant difference between the cloud platforms utilized as well as Vader and demonstrated that each platform is unique in its analysis scoring mechanism

    Collaborative Edge Computing in Mobile Internet of Things

    The proliferation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices has opened a plethora of opportunities for smart networking, connected applications and data driven intelligence. The large distribution of IoT devices within a finite geographical area and the pervasiveness of wireless networking present an opportunity for such devices to collaborate. Centralized decision systems have so far dominated the field, but they are starting to lose relevance in the wake of heterogeneity of the device pool. This thesis is driven by three key hypothesis: (i) In solving complex problems, it is possible to harness unused compute capabilities of the device pool instead of always relying on centralized infrastructures; (ii) When possible, collaborating with neighbors to identify security threats scales well in large environments; (iii) Given the abundance of data from a large pool of devices with possible privacy constraints, collaborative learning drives scalable intelligence. This dissertation defines three frameworks for these hypotheses; collaborative computing, collaborative security and collaborative privacy intelligence. The first framework, Opportunistic collaboration among IoT devices for workload execution, profiles applications and matches resource grants to requests using blockchain to put excess capacity at the edge to good use. The evaluation results show app execution latency comparable to the centralized edge and an outstanding resource utilization at the edge. The second framework, Integrity Threat Identification for Distributed IoT, uses a new spatio-temporal algorithm, based on Local Outlier Factor (LOF) uniquely using mean and variance collaboratively across spatial and temporal dimensions to identify potential threats. Evaluation results on real world underground sensor dataset (Thoreau) show good accuracy and efficiency. The third frame- work, Collaborative Privacy Intelligence, aims to understand privacy invasion by reverse engineering a user’s privacy model using sensors data, and score the level of intrusion for various dimensions of privacy. By having sensors track activities, and learning rule books from the collective insights, we are able to predict ones privacy attributes and states, with reasonable accuracy. As the Edge gains more prominence with computation moving closer to the data source, the above frameworks will drive key solutions and research in areas of Edge federation and collaboration

    Sentiment Analysis and Classification on Amazon Products using Improved Support Vector Machine for Multiclass Classification

    There is a huge increase in number of peoples who have been accessing many social networking sites especially user post or reviews for a specific product, company, brand, individual, forums and movies etc. These reviews are helpful in judging customer perception on certain thing. The development of algorithms that could automate the categorization of distinct comments based on feedback from consumers became an analyst project, and this automated classification process is known as sentiment analysis. This research main goal is to analyze Amazon product reviews using an approach to Machine Learning (ML) built around TF-IDF and then employ the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to categorize the sentiment scores and sentences. SVM can handle binomial classification but the customer reviews is mostly classified into positive, negative and neutral and in some applications, it is fine grained into star ratings such 1-5 or sometimes 1-10. Also, in some applications features or attributes are high in number in which some are irrelevant. Hence, this work applies feature subset algorithm and improves the existing SVM to handle multiclass classification. The Sentiment analysis, Rapidminer tool is considered for classification and the results are visualized, assessed with suitable classification metrics
