    Validating the ontolex-lemon lexicography module with K dictionaries'' multilingual data

    The OntoLex-lemon model has gradually acquired the status of de-facto standard for the representation of lexical information according to the principles of Linked Data (LD). Exposing the content of lexicographic resources as LD brings both benefits for their easier sharing, discovery, reusability and enrichment at a Web scale, as well as for their internal linking and better reuse of their components. However, with lemon being originally devised for the lexicalization of ontologies, a 1:1 mapping between its elements and those of a lexicographic resource is not always attainable. In this paper we report our experience of validating the new lexicog module of OntoLex-lemon, which aims at paving the way to bridge those gaps. To that end, we have applied the module to represent lexicographic data coming from the Global multilingual series of K Dictionaries (KD) as a real use case scenario of this module. Attention is drawn to the structures and annotations that lead to modelling challenges, the ways the lexicog module tackles them, and where this modelling phase stands as regards the conversion process and design decisions for KD's Global series

    Modelling frequency and attestations for OntoLex-Lemon

    The OntoLex vocabulary enjoys increasing popularity as a means of publishing lexical resources with RDF and as Linked Data. The recent publication of a new OntoLex module for lexicography, lexicog, reflects its increasing importance for digital lexicography. However, not all aspects of digital lexicography have been covered to the same extent. In particular, supplementary information drawn from corpora such as frequency information, links to attestations, and collocation data were considered to be beyond the scope of lexicog. Therefore, the OntoLex community has put forward the proposal for a novel module for frequency, attestation and corpus information (FrAC), that not only covers the requirements of digital lexicography, but also accommodates essential data structures for lexical information in natural language processing. This paper introduces the current state of the OntoLex-FrAC vocabulary, describes its structure, some selected use cases, elementary concepts and fundamental definitions, with a focus on frequency and attestations

    Challenges for the representation of morphology in ontology lexicons

    Recent years have experienced a growing trend in the publication of language resources as Linguistic Linked Data (LLD) to enhance their discovery, reuse and the interoperability of tools that consume language data. To this aim, the OntoLex-lemon model has emerged as a de facto standard to represent lexical data on the Web. However, traditional dictionaries contain a considerable amount of morphological information which is not straightforwardly representable as LLD within the current model. In order to fill this gap a new Morphology Module of OntoLex-lemon is currently being developed. This paper presents the results of this model as on-going work as well as the underlying challenges that emerged during the module development. Based on the MMoOn Core ontology, it aims to account for a wide range of morphological information, ranging from endings to derive whole paradigms to the decomposition and generation of lexical entries which is in compliance to other OntoLex-lemon modules and facilitates the encoding of complex morphological data in ontology lexicons

    Models to represent linguistic linked data

    As the interest of the Semantic Web and computational linguistics communities in linguistic linked data (LLD) keeps increasing and the number of contributions that dwell on LLD rapidly grows, scholars (and linguists in particular) interested in the development of LLD resources sometimes find it difficult to determine which mechanism is suitable for their needs and which challenges have already been addressed. This review seeks to present the state of the art on the models, ontologies and their extensions to represent language resources as LLD by focusing on the nature of the linguistic content they aim to encode. Four basic groups of models are distinguished in this work: models to represent the main elements of lexical resources (group 1), vocabularies developed as extensions to models in group 1 and ontologies that provide more granularity on specific levels of linguistic analysis (group 2), catalogues of linguistic data categories (group 3) and other models such as corpora models or service-oriented ones (group 4). Contributions encompassed in these four groups are described, highlighting their reuse by the community and the modelling challenges that are still to be faced

    When linguistics meets web technologies. Recent advances in modelling linguistic linked data

    This article provides an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of models (including vocabularies, taxonomies and ontologies) used for representing linguistic linked data (LLD). It focuses on the latest developments in the area and both builds upon and complements previous works covering similar territory. The article begins with an overview of recent trends which have had an impact on linked data models and vocabularies, such as the growing influence of the FAIR guidelines, the funding of several major projects in which LLD is a key component, and the increasing importance of the relationship of the digital humanities with LLD. Next, we give an overview of some of the most well known vocabularies and models in LLD. After this we look at some of the latest developments in community standards and initiatives such as OntoLex-Lemon as well as recent work which has been in carried out in corpora and annotation and LLD including a discussion of the LLD metadata vocabularies META-SHARE and lime and language identifiers. In the following part of the paper we look at work which has been realised in a number of recent projects and which has a significant impact on LLD vocabularies and models

    Inducing the Cross-Disciplinary Usage of Morphological Language Data Through Semantic Modelling

    Despite the enormous technological advancements in the area of data creation and management the vast majority of language data still exists as digital single-use artefacts that are inaccessible for further research efforts. At the same time the advent of digitisation in science increased the possibilities for knowledge acquisition through the computational application of linguistic information for various disciplines. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to create the preconditions that enable the cross-disciplinary usage of morphological language data as a sub-area of linguistic data in order to induce a shared reusability for every research area that relies on such data. This involves the provision of morphological data on the Web under an open license and needs to take the prevalent diversity of data compilation into account. Various representation standards emerged across single disciplines which lead to heterogeneous data that differs with regard to complexity, scope and data formats. This situation requires a unifying foundation enabling direct reusability. As a solution to fill the gap of missing open data and to overcome the presence of isolated datasets a semantic data modelling approach is applied. Being rooted in the Linked Open Data (LOD) paradigm it pursues the creation of data as uniquely identifiable resources that are realised as URIs, accessible on the Web, available under an open license, interlinked with other resources, and adhere to Linked Data representation standards such as the RDF format. Each resource then contributes to the LOD cloud in which they are all interconnected. This unification results from ontologically shared bases that formally define the classification of resources and their relation to other resources in a semantically interoperable manner. Subsequently, the possibility of creating semantically structured data has sparked the formation of the Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) research community and LOD sub-cloud containing primarily language resources. Over the last decade, ontologies emerged mainly for the domain of lexical language data which lead to a significant increase in Linked Data-based linguistic datasets. However, an equivalent model for morphological data is still missing, leading to a lack of this type of language data within the LLOD cloud. This thesis presents six publications that are concerned with the peculiarities of morphological data and the exploration of their semantic representation as an enabler of cross-disciplinary reuse. The Multilingual Morpheme Ontology (MMoOn Core) as well as an architectural framework for morphemic dataset creation as RDF resources are proposed as the first comprehensive domain representation model adhering to the LOD paradigm. It will be shown that MMoOn Core permits the joint representation of heterogeneous data sources such as interlinear glossed texts, inflection tables, the outputs of morphological analysers, lists of morphemic glosses or word-formation rules which are all equally labelled as “morphological data” across different research areas. Evidence for the applicability and adequacy of the semantic modelling entailed by the MMoOn Core ontology is provided by two datasets that were transformed from tabular data into RDF: the Hebrew Morpheme Inventory and Xhosa RDF dataset. Both further demonstrate how their integration into the LLOD cloud - by interlinking them with external language resources - yields insights that could not be obtained from the initial source data. Altogether the research conducted in this thesis establishes the foundation for an interoperable data exchange and the enrichment of morphological language data. It strives to achieve the broader goal of advancing language data-driven research by overcoming data barriers and discipline boundaries

    Computational morphology with OntoLex-Morph

    This paper describes the current status of the emerging OntoLex module for linguistic morphology. It serves as an update to the previous version of the vocabulary (Klimek et al. 2019). Whereas this earlier model was exclusively focusing on descriptive morphology and focused on applications in lexicography, we now present a novel part and a novel application of the vocabulary to applications in language technology, i.e., the rule-based generation of lexicons, introducing a dynamic component into OntoLex

    Recent developments for the linguistic linked open data infrastructure

    In this paper we describe the contributions made by the European H2020 project “Pret-a-LLOD” (‘Ready-to-use Multilingual Linked Language Data for Knowledge Services across Sectors’) to the further development of the Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) infrastructure. Pret-a-LLOD aims to develop a new methodology for building data value chains applicable to a wide range of sectors and applications and based around language resources and language technologies that can be integrated by means of semantic technologies. We describe the methods implemented for increasing the number of language data sets in the LLOD. We also present the approach for ensuring interoperability and for porting LLOD data sets and services to other infrastructures, as well as the contribution of the projects to existing standards

    Historical lexicography of Old French and linked open data: transforming the resources of the Dictionnaire étymologique de l'ancien français with OntoLex-Lemon

    The adaptation of novel techniques and standards in computational lexicography is taking place at an accelerating pace, as manifested by recent extensions beyond the traditional XML-based paradigm of electronic publication. One important area of activity in this regard is the transformation of lexicographic resources into (Linguistic) Linked Open Data ([L]LOD), and the application of the OntoLex-Lemon vocabulary to electronic editions of dictionaries. At the moment, however, these activities focus on machine-readable dictionaries, natural language processing and modern languages and found only limited resonance in philology in general and in historical language stages in particular. This paper presents an endeavor to transform the resources of a comprehensive dictionary of Old French into LOD using OntoLex-Lemon and it sketches the difficulties of modeling particular aspects that are due to the medieval stage of the language

    The construction of a linguistic linked data framework for bilingual lexicographic resources

    Little-known lexicographic resources can be of tremendous value to users once digitised. By extending the digitisation efforts for a lexicographic resource, converting the human readable digital object to a state that is also machine-readable, structured data can be created that is semantically interoperable, thereby enabling the lexicographic resource to access, and be accessed by, other semantically interoperable resources. The purpose of this study is to formulate a process when converting a lexicographic resource in print form to a machine-readable bilingual lexicographic resource applying linguistic linked data principles, using the English-Xhosa Dictionary for Nurses as a case study. This is accomplished by creating a linked data framework, in which data are expressed in the form of RDF triples and URIs, in a manner which allows for extensibility to a multilingual resource. Click languages with characters not typically represented by the Roman alphabet are also considered. The purpose of this linked data framework is to define each lexical entry as “historically dynamic”, instead of “ontologically static” (Rafferty, 2016:5). For a framework which has instances in constant evolution, focus is thus given to the management of provenance and linked data generation thereof. The output is an implementation framework which provides methodological guidelines for similar language resources in the interdisciplinary field of Library and Information Science
