Cloud Chaser: Real Time Deep Learning Computer Vision on Low Computing Power Devices
Internet of Things(IoT) devices, mobile phones, and robotic systems are often
denied the power of deep learning algorithms due to their limited computing
power. However, to provide time-critical services such as emergency response,
home assistance, surveillance, etc, these devices often need real-time analysis
of their camera data. This paper strives to offer a viable approach to
integrate high-performance deep learning-based computer vision algorithms with
low-resource and low-power devices by leveraging the computing power of the
cloud. By offloading the computation work to the cloud, no dedicated hardware
is needed to enable deep neural networks on existing low computing power
devices. A Raspberry Pi based robot, Cloud Chaser, is built to demonstrate the
power of using cloud computing to perform real-time vision tasks. Furthermore,
to reduce latency and improve real-time performance, compression algorithms are

A Taxonomy for Management and Optimization of Multiple Resources in Edge Computing
Edge computing is promoted to meet increasing performance needs of
data-driven services using computational and storage resources close to the end
devices, at the edge of the current network. To achieve higher performance in
this new paradigm one has to consider how to combine the efficiency of resource
usage at all three layers of architecture: end devices, edge devices, and the
cloud. While cloud capacity is elastically extendable, end devices and edge
devices are to various degrees resource-constrained. Hence, an efficient
resource management is essential to make edge computing a reality. In this
work, we first present terminology and architectures to characterize current
works within the field of edge computing. Then, we review a wide range of
recent articles and categorize relevant aspects in terms of 4 perspectives:
resource type, resource management objective, resource location, and resource
use. This taxonomy and the ensuing analysis is used to identify some gaps in
the existing research. Among several research gaps, we found that research is
less prevalent on data, storage, and energy as a resource, and less extensive
towards the estimation, discovery and sharing objectives. As for resource
types, the most well-studied resources are computation and communication
resources. Our analysis shows that resource management at the edge requires a
deeper understanding of how methods applied at different levels and geared
towards different resource types interact. Specifically, the impact of mobility
and collaboration schemes requiring incentives are expected to be different in
edge architectures compared to the classic cloud solutions. Finally, we find
that fewer works are dedicated to the study of non-functional properties or to
quantifying the footprint of resource management techniques, including

Hybrid-Vehfog: A Robust Approach for Reliable Dissemination of Critical Messages in Connected Vehicles
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) enable efficient communication between
vehicles with the aim of improving road safety. However, the growing number of
vehicles in dense regions and obstacle shadowing regions like Manhattan and
other downtown areas leads to frequent disconnection problems resulting in
disrupted radio wave propagation between vehicles. To address this issue and to
transmit critical messages between vehicles and drones deployed from service
vehicles to overcome road incidents and obstacles, we proposed a hybrid
technique based on fog computing called Hybrid-Vehfog to disseminate messages
in obstacle shadowing regions, and multi-hop technique to disseminate messages
in non-obstacle shadowing regions. Our proposed algorithm dynamically adapts to
changes in an environment and benefits in efficiency with robust drone
deployment capability as needed. Performance of Hybrid-Vehfog is carried out in
Network Simulator (NS-2) and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) simulators.
The results showed that Hybrid-Vehfog outperformed Cloud-assisted Message
Downlink Dissemination Scheme (CMDS), Cross-Layer Broadcast Protocol (CLBP),
PEer-to-Peer protocol for Allocated REsource (PrEPARE), Fog-Named Data
Networking (NDN) with mobility, and flooding schemes at all vehicle densities
and simulation times
Quantifying the latency benefits of near-edge and in-network FPGA acceleration
Transmitting data to cloud datacenters in distributed IoT applications introduces significant communication latency, but is often the only feasible solution when source nodes are computationally limited. To address latency concerns, cloudlets, in-network computing, and more capable edge nodes are all being explored as a way of moving processing capability towards the edge of the network. Hardware acceleration using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is also seeing increased interest due to reduced computation latency and improved efficiency. This paper evaluates the the implications of these offloading approaches using a case study neural network based image classification application, quantifying both the computation and communication latency resulting from different platform choices. We consider communication latency including the ingestion of packets for processing on the target platform, showing that this varies significantly with the choice of platform. We demonstrate that emerging in-network accelerator approaches offer much improved and predictable performance as well as better scaling to support multiple data sources
