Realising intelligent virtual design
This paper presents a vision and focus for the CAD Centre research: the Intelligent Design Assistant (IDA). The vision is based upon the assumption that the human and computer can operate symbiotically, with the computer providing support for the human within the design process. Recently however the focus has been towards the development of integrated design platforms that provide general support irrespective of the domain, to a number of distributed collaborative designers. This is illustrated within the successfully completed Virtual Reality Ship (VRS) virtual platform, and the challenges are discussed further within the NECTISE, SAFEDOR and VIRTUE projects

Cloudbus Toolkit for Market-Oriented Cloud Computing
This keynote paper: (1) presents the 21st century vision of computing and
identifies various IT paradigms promising to deliver computing as a utility;
(2) defines the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds and computing
atmosphere by leveraging technologies such as virtual machines; (3) provides
thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both
customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain
SLA-oriented resource allocation; (4) presents the work carried out as part of
our new Cloud Computing initiative, called Cloudbus: (i) Aneka, a Platform as a
Service software system containing SDK (Software Development Kit) for
construction of Cloud applications and deployment on private or public Clouds,
in addition to supporting market-oriented resource management; (ii)
internetworking of Clouds for dynamic creation of federated computing
environments for scaling of elastic applications; (iii) creation of 3rd party
Cloud brokering services for building content delivery networks and e-Science
applications and their deployment on capabilities of IaaS providers such as
Amazon along with Grid mashups; (iv) CloudSim supporting modelling and
simulation of Clouds for performance studies; (v) Energy Efficient Resource
Allocation Mechanisms and Techniques for creation and management of Green

DoctorEye: A clinically driven multifunctional platform, for accurate processing of tumors in medical images
Copyright @ Skounakis et al.This paper presents a novel, open access interactive platform for 3D medical image analysis, simulation and visualization, focusing in oncology images. The platform was developed through constant interaction and feedback from expert clinicians integrating a thorough analysis of their requirements while having an ultimate goal of assisting in accurately delineating tumors. It allows clinicians not only to work with a large number of 3D tomographic datasets but also to efficiently annotate multiple regions of interest in the same session. Manual and semi-automatic segmentation techniques combined with integrated correction tools assist in the quick and refined delineation of tumors while different users can add different components related to oncology such as tumor growth and simulation algorithms for improving therapy planning. The platform has been tested by different users and over large number of heterogeneous tomographic datasets to ensure stability, usability, extensibility and robustness with promising results. A virtual environment to support the distributed design of large made-to-order products
An overview of a virtual design environment (virtual platform) developed as part of the European Commission funded VRShips-ROPAX (VRS) project is presented. The main objectives for the development of the virtual platform are described, followed by the discussion of the techniques chosen to address the objectives, and finally a description of a use-case for the platform. Whilst the focus of the VRS virtual platform was to facilitate the design of ROPAX (roll-on passengers and cargo) vessels, the components within the platform are entirely generic and may be applied to the distributed design of any type of vessel, or other complex made-to-order products
Experiments in cooperative human multi-robot navigation
In this paper, we consider the problem of a
group of autonomous mobile robots and a human moving
coordinately in a real-world implementation. The group
moves throughout a dynamic and unstructured environment.
The key problem to be solved is the inclusion of a human in a
real multi-robot system and consequently the multiple robot
motion coordination. We present a set of performance metrics
(system efficiency and percentage of time in formation) and a
novel flexible formation definition whereby a formation
control strategy both in simulation and in real-world
experiments of a human multi-robot system is presented. The
formation control proposed is stable and effective by means of
its uniform dispersion, cohesion and flexibility
Practical applications of multi-agent systems in electric power systems
The transformation of energy networks from passive to active systems requires the embedding of intelligence within the network. One suitable approach to integrating distributed intelligent systems is multi-agent systems technology, where components of functionality run as autonomous agents capable of interaction through messaging. This provides loose coupling between components that can benefit the complex systems envisioned for the smart grid. This paper reviews the key milestones of demonstrated agent systems in the power industry and considers which aspects of agent design must still be addressed for widespread application of agent technology to occur
OpenPING: A Reflective Middleware for the Construction of Adaptive Networked Game Applications
The emergence of distributed Virtual Reality (VR) applications
that run over the Internet has presented networked game
application designers with new challenges. In an environment
where the public internet streams multimedia data and is
constantly under pressure to deliver over widely heterogeneous
user-platforms, there has been a growing need that distributed VR
applications be aware of and adapt to frequent variations in their
context of execution. In this paper, we argue that in contrast to
research efforts targeted at improvement of scalability, persistence
and responsiveness capabilities, much less attempts have been
aimed at addressing the flexibility, maintainability and
extensibility requirements in contemporary distributed VR
platforms. We propose the use of structural reflection as an
approach that not only addresses these requirements but also
offers added value in the form of providing a framework for
scalability, persistence and responsiveness that is itself flexible,
maintainable and extensible. We also present an adaptive
middleware platform implementation called OpenPING1 that
supports our proposal in addressing these requirements

Validation Of Naval Platform Electromagnetic Tools Via Model And Full-Scale Measurements
Reliable EMC predictions are very important in the design of a naval platform's topside. Currently, EMC predictions of a Navy ship are verified by scale model and full-scale measurements. In the near future, the validation of software tools leads to an increased confidence in EMC predictions and (hopefully) removes the need for scale model measurements. In general, full-scale verification measurements will remain necessary, although perhaps fewer measurements will be required. The paper presents our topside design experience, from rough estimations 40 years ago, to analytical calculations and model measurements 20 years ago, to the numerically supported process as it is now. It shows the process of validating simulation tools with model and full-scale measurements. It also describes the challenges encountered and the deficiencies of commercial tools used now and the roadmap for Thales Naval Netherlands towards the integrated tools of the future
