Towards a killer app for the Semantic Web
Killer apps are highly transformative technologies that create new markets and widespread patterns of behaviour. IT generally, and the Web in particular, has benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The Semantic Web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. There are certain features that distinguish killer apps from other ordinary applications. This paper examines those features in the context of the Semantic Web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing Semantic Web applications
OntoMaven: Maven-based Ontology Development and Management of Distributed Ontology Repositories
In collaborative agile ontology development projects support for modular
reuse of ontologies from large existing remote repositories, ontology project
life cycle management, and transitive dependency management are important
needs. The Apache Maven approach has proven its success in distributed
collaborative Software Engineering by its widespread adoption. The contribution
of this paper is a new design artifact called OntoMaven. OntoMaven adopts the
Maven-based development methodology and adapts its concepts to knowledge
engineering for Maven-based ontology development and management of ontology
artifacts in distributed ontology repositories.Comment: Pre-print submission to 9th International Workshop on Semantic Web

Business Ontology for Evaluating Corporate Social Responsibility
This paper presents a software solution that is developed to automatically classify companies by taking into account their level of social responsibility. The application is based on ontologies and on intelligent agents. In order to obtain the data needed to evaluate companies, we developed a web crawling module that analyzes the companyâs website and the documents that are available online such as social responsibility report, mission statement, employment structure, etc. Based on a predefined CSR ontology, the web crawling module extracts the terms that are linked to corporate social responsibility. By taking into account the extracted qualitative data, an intelligent agent, previously trained on a set of companies, computes the qualitative values, which are then included in the classification model based on neural networks. The proposed ontology takes into consideration the guidelines proposed by the âISO 26000 Standard for Social Responsibilityâ. Having this model, and being aware of the positive relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility and financial performance, an overall perspective on each companyâs activity can be configured, this being useful not only to the companyâs creditors, auditors, stockholders, but also to its consumers.corporate social responsibility, ISO 26000 Standard for Social Responsibility, ontology, web crawling, intelligent agent, corporate performance, POS tagging, opinion mining, sentiment analysis
Rule Responder: A Rule-Based Semantic eScience Service Infrastructure
To a large degree information and services for chemical e-Science have become accessible -anytime, anywhere -but not necessarily useful. The Rule Responder eScience middleware is about providing information consumers with rule-based agents to transform existing information into relevant information of practical consequences, hence providing control to the end-users to express in a declarative rule-based way how to turn existing information into personally relevant information and how to react or make automated decisions on top of it
Memories for Life: A Review of the Science and Technology
This paper discusses scientific, social and technological aspects of memory. Recent developments in our understanding of memory processes and mechanisms, and their digital implementation, have placed the encoding, storage, management and retrieval of information at the forefront of several fields of research. At the same time, the divisions between the biological, physical and the digital worlds seem to be dissolving. Hence opportunities for interdisciplinary research into memory are being created, between the life sciences, social sciences and physical sciences. Such research may benefit from immediate application into information management technology as a testbed. The paper describes one initiative, Memories for Life, as a potential common problem space for the various interested disciplines
Features for Killer Apps from a Semantic Web Perspective
There are certain features that that distinguish killer apps from other ordinary applications. This chapter examines those features in the context of the semantic web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing semantic web applications. Killer apps are highly tranformative technologies that create new e-commerce venues and widespread patterns of behaviour. Information technology, generally, and the Web, in particular, have benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The semantic web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. The authors hope that this chapter will help to highlight some of the common ingredients of killer apps in e-commerce, and discuss how such applications might emerge in the semantic web
