    Networked Control Systems: The Communication Basics and Control Methodologies

    As an emerging research field, networked control systems have shown the increasing importance and attracted more and more attention in the recent years. The integration of control and communication in networked control systems has made the design and analysis of such systems a great theoretical challenge for conventional control theory. Such an integration also makes the implementation of networked control systems a necessary intermediate step towards the final convergence of control, communication, and computation. We here introduce the basics of networked control systems and then describe the state-of-the-art research in this field. We hope such a brief tutorial can be useful to inspire further development of networked control systems in both theory and potential applications

    Mid-morning Break and Poster Sessions: Application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour within School-Based Prevention Programs for Adolescent Gambling

    The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the concept of anticipatory negative emotions have attracted considerable research attention in the formulation of effective preventive interventions. This approach has identified several key constructs (i.e., attitudes, subjective norms, perceptions of control, anticipation of negative emotions) as valid predictors of gambling intentions and behaviour. However, no empirical investigation has utilized these constructs in the design or evaluation of a youth problem gambling prevention initiative. Objectives. The current research aims to assess the effects of a prevention video on gambling-related attitudes, subjective norms, control perceptions, anticipated negative emotions, and intentions. The video focuses on a problem gambler’s testimonial and includes dramatic vignettes depicting the potential risks and consequences associated with excessive gambling. Methodology. A sample of 328 high school students were randomly assigned to either a video or control group. Participants were assessed at pre- and post-intervention. Results. Preliminary results reveal that the video produced changes in students’: (i) attitudes towards; (ii) perceptions of control over and; (iii) negative anticipatory emotions following excessive participation in gambling. Individuals receiving the intervention were observed to have a significant decreases in positive attitudes toward gambling as well as perceptions of control over gambling, and a significant increase in their anticipation of negative emotions for becoming over-involved in gambling. Conclusions. Positive effects of the video were found. Recommendations for future research are discussed

    Control of quantum phenomena: Past, present, and future

    Quantum control is concerned with active manipulation of physical and chemical processes on the atomic and molecular scale. This work presents a perspective of progress in the field of control over quantum phenomena, tracing the evolution of theoretical concepts and experimental methods from early developments to the most recent advances. The current experimental successes would be impossible without the development of intense femtosecond laser sources and pulse shapers. The two most critical theoretical insights were (1) realizing that ultrafast atomic and molecular dynamics can be controlled via manipulation of quantum interferences and (2) understanding that optimally shaped ultrafast laser pulses are the most effective means for producing the desired quantum interference patterns in the controlled system. Finally, these theoretical and experimental advances were brought together by the crucial concept of adaptive feedback control, which is a laboratory procedure employing measurement-driven, closed-loop optimization to identify the best shapes of femtosecond laser control pulses for steering quantum dynamics towards the desired objective. Optimization in adaptive feedback control experiments is guided by a learning algorithm, with stochastic methods proving to be especially effective. Adaptive feedback control of quantum phenomena has found numerous applications in many areas of the physical and chemical sciences, and this paper reviews the extensive experiments. Other subjects discussed include quantum optimal control theory, quantum control landscapes, the role of theoretical control designs in experimental realizations, and real-time quantum feedback control.     Must Realists Be Pessimists About Democracy? Responding to Epistemic and Oligarchic Challenges

    In this paper we show how a realistic normative democratic theory can work within the constraints set by the most pessimistic empirical results about voting behaviour and elite capture of the policy process. After setting out the empirical evidence and discussing some extant responses by political theorists, we argue that the evidence produces a two-pronged challenge for democracy: an epistemic challenge concerning the quality and focus of decision-making and an oligarchic challenge concerning power concentration. To address the challenges we then put forward three main normative claims, each of which is compatible with the evidence. We start with a critique of the epistocratic position commonly thought to be supported by the evidence. We then introduce a qualified critique of referenda and other forms of plebiscite, and an outline of a tribune-based system of popular control over oligarchic influence on the policy process. Our discussion points towards a renewal of democracy in a plebeian but not plebiscitarian direction: Attention to the relative power of social classes matters more than formal dispersal of power through voting. We close with some methodological reflections about the compatibility between our normative claims and the realist program in political philosophy

    Young Consumers’ Attitude towards Halal Food Outlets and JAKIM's Halal Certification in Malaysia

    AbstractThe attitude of Muslims on halal food is imperative in determining the Muslims’ behavior towards consuming halal food. There are several studies on consumers’ attitude in purchasing halal food in Malaysia focusing on consumers in general. But less attention is given to young Muslim consumers’ on their attitude of halal food outlets and Malaysia's Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM)’s halal certification. Therefore, this paper focuses on young people who will determine the future of halal industry in this country. The main objectives of this paper are a) to indentify the attitude of young Muslim consumers towards halal food outlets, b) to determine their attitude towards halal certification issued by JAKIM and c) to identify the relationship between subjective norm and perceived behavioral control towards the attitude of young consumers in choosing halal food outlets. The framework of consumers’ attitude in this study is based on the Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior which postulates three conceptually independent determinants of behavioral intention: attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. Data were collected through self administered questionnaires and the respondents comprised of Muslim students between 16 and 35 years old from Higher Learning Private Institutions. The findings of this study revealed young Muslims’ positive attitude towards halal food outlets and JAKIM's certification. However, the subjective norms have less significant influences compared to attitude and behavioral control of young consumers in choosing halal food outlets. The study suggests that to increase positive attitude of Muslim consumers, relevant bodies and media should augment the promotion and publicity of halal certification issued by JAKIM to increase awareness among young Muslim consumers in Malaysia. Future research may look into the relationship between the three independent variables of the Planned Behaviors Theory towards young consumers’ intention to choose halal food products in different geographical locations in Malaysia

    Internal migration, the propiska, and post-socialist urban change in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

    Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, there has been remarkable enthusiasm for theorising how transitional processes have unfolded in post-socialist cities. In seeking to extend literature that uses the post- socialist condition as a tool for theory building, we draw attention to the ongoing processes of institutional change in post-socialist cities. In doing so, we reject a ‘top-down’ perspective and examine how these institutional transitions are shaped through processes of ‘domestication’, negotiation and contestation between different interest groups in the city. We develop our argument, by drawing attention to the local political debates surrounding the propiska in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The propiska developed throughout the Soviet Union to control internal migration and is still used today in a less restrictive form. By discussing our case study, we hope to foster attention towards the ongoing contested processes of institutional transition in post- socialist cities

    This thesis focuses on Deterministic and Probabilistic Boolean Control Networks and their application to some specific Gene Regulatory Networks. At first, some introductory materials about Boolean Logic, Left Semi-tensor Product and Probability are presented in order to explain in detail the concepts of Boolean Networks, Boolean Control Networks, Probabilistic Boolean Networks and Probabilistic Boolean Control Networks. These networks can be modelled in state-space and their representation, obtained by means of the left semi-tensor product, is called algebraic form. Subsequently, the thesis concentrates on presenting the fundamental properties of these networks such as the classical Systems Theory properties of stability, reachability, controllability and stabilisation. Afterwards, the attention is drawn towards the comparison between deterministic and probabilistic boolean networks.     Performance analysis and optimization of asynchronous circuits

    Journal ArticleAsynchronous/Self-timed circuits are beginning to attract renewed attention as promising means of dealing with the complexity of modern VLSI designs. However, there are very few analysis techniques or tools available for estimating the performance of asynchronous circuits. In this paper we adapt the theory of Generalized Timed Petri-nets (GTPN) for analyzing and comparing a wide variety of asynchronous circuits, ranging from purely control-oriented circuits such as cross-bar arbiters to large asynchronous systems with data dependent control such as asynchronous processors. Experiments with the GTPN analyzer are found to track the observed performance of actual asynchronous circuits, thereby offering empirical evidence towards the soundness of the modeling approach. Our main contribution is in demonstrating how a quantitative design methodology for asynchronous circuits can be developed based on Timed Petri-nets
