From individual characters to large crowds: augmenting the believability of open-world games through exploring social emotion in pedestrian groups
Crowds of non-player characters improve the game-play experiences of open-world video-games. Grouping is a common phenomenon of crowds and plays an important role in crowd behaviour. Recent crowd simulation research focuses on group modelling in pedestrian crowds and game-designers have argued that the design of non-player characters should capture and exploit the relationship between characters. The concepts of social groups and inter-character relationships are not new in social psychology, and on-going work addresses the social life of emotions and its behavioural consequences on individuals and groups alike. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current research in social psychology, and to use the findings as a source of inspiration to design a social network of non-player characters, with application to the problem of group modelling in simulated crowds in computer games
The role of response mechanisms in determining reaction time performance: Piéron’s Law revisited
A response mechanism takes evaluations of the importance of potential actions and selects the most suitable. Response mechanism function is a nontrivial problem that has not received the attention it deserves within cognitive psychology. In this article, we make a case for the importance of considering response mechanism function as a constraint on cognitive processes and emphasized links with the wider problem of behavioral action selection. First, we show that, contrary to previous suggestions, a well–known model of the Stroop task (Cohen, Dunbar, & McClelland, 1990) relies on the response mechanism for a key feature of its results—the interference–facilitation asymmetry. Second, we examine a variety of response mechanisms (including that in the model of Cohen et al., 1990) and show that they all follow a law analogous to Piéron's law in relating their input to reaction time. In particular, this is true of a decision mechanism not designed to explain RT data but based on a proposed solution to the general problem of action selection and grounded in the neurobiology of the vertebrate basal ganglia. Finally, we show that the dynamics of simple artificial neurons also support a Piéron–like law
A feedback model of visual attention
Feedback connections are a prominent feature of cortical anatomy and are likely
to have significant functional role in neural information processing. We present
a neural network model of cortical feedback that successfully simulates
neurophysiological data associated with attention. In this domain our model can
be considered a more detailed, and biologically plausible, implementation of the
biased competition model of attention. However, our model is more general as it
can also explain a variety of other top-down processes in vision, such as
figure/ground segmentation and contextual cueing. This model thus suggests that
a common mechanism, involving cortical feedback pathways, is responsible for a
range of phenomena and provides a unified account of currently disparate areas
of research
Occlusion-related lateral connections stabilize kinetic depth stimuli through perceptual coupling
Local sensory information is often ambiguous forcing the brain to integrate spatiotemporally separated information for stable conscious perception. Lateral connections between clusters of similarly tuned neurons in the visual cortex are a potential neural substrate for the coupling of spatially separated visual information. Ecological optics suggests that perceptual coupling of visual information is particularly beneficial in occlusion situations. Here we present a novel neural network model and a series of human psychophysical experiments that can together explain the perceptual coupling of kinetic depth stimuli with activity-driven lateral information sharing in the far depth plane. Our most striking finding is the perceptual coupling of an ambiguous kinetic depth cylinder with a coaxially presented and disparity defined cylinder backside, while a similar frontside fails to evoke coupling. Altogether, our findings are consistent with the idea that clusters of similarly tuned far depth neurons share spatially separated motion information in order to resolve local perceptual ambiguities. The classification of far depth in the facilitation mechanism results from a combination of absolute and relative depth that suggests a functional role of these lateral connections in the perception of partially occluded objects
Superior parietal cortex and the attention to delayed intention: An rTMS study.
This study aimed to investigate whether the superior parietal cortex is causally involved in PM and, if so, what is
its functional role. We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the left and right superior
parietal cortex, and we evaluated the TMS effects on two different PM tasks that required to direct the attention
towards either the external stimuli (\u2018Monitoring-load\u2019 task) or the intention in memory (\u2018Retrospective-load\u2019
task).
rTMS of left parietal cortex produced a facilitation of PM performance in both tasks. This was coupled by
slower responses to the ongoing activity, for left and right parietal stimulation, but selectively in the
\u2018Retrospective-load\u2019 condition.
The present results suggest that superior parietal cortex is causally involved in biasing top-down attentional
resources between the external, ongoing stimuli and the internal, PM intentions. The possible physiological
mechanisms underlying the TMS-related improvement in PM performance are discussed
Mixing the stimulus list in bilingual lexical decision turns cognate facilitation effects into mirrored inhibition effects
To test the BIA+ and Multilink models’ accounts of how bilinguals process words with different degrees of cross-linguistic orthographic and semantic overlap, we conducted two experiments manipulating stimulus list composition. Dutch-English late bilinguals performed two English lexical decision tasks including the same set of cognates, interlingual homographs, English control words, and pseudowords. In one task, half of the pseudowords were replaced with Dutch words, requiring a ‘no’ response. This change from pure to mixed language list context was found to turn cognate facilitation effects into inhibition. Relative to control words, larger effects were found for cognate pairs with an increasing cross-linguistic form overlap. Identical cognates produced considerably larger effects than non-identical cognates, supporting their special status in the bilingual lexicon. Response patterns for different item types are accounted for in terms of the items’ lexical representation and their binding to ‘yes’ and ‘no’ responses in pure vs mixed lexical decision
Increased bradykinesia in Parkinson’s disease with increased movement complexity: elbow flexion-extension movements
The present research investigates factors contributing to bradykinesia in the control of simple and complex voluntary limb movement in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. The functional scheme of the basal ganglia (BG)–thalamocortical circuit was described by a mathematical model based on the mean firing rates of BG nuclei. PD was simulated as a reduction in dopamine levels, and a loss of functional segregation between two competing motor modules. In order to compare model simulations with performed movements, flexion and extension at the elbow joint is taken as a test case. Results indicated that loss of segregation contributed to bradykinesia due to interference between competing modules and a reduced ability to suppress unwanted movements. Additionally, excessive neurotransmitter depletion is predicted as a possible mechanism for the increased difficulty in performing complex movements. The simulation results showed that the model is in qualitative agreement with the results from movement experiments on PD patients and healthy subjects. Furthermore, based on changes in the firing rate of BG nuclei, the model demonstrated that the effective mechanism of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in STN may result from stimulation induced inhibition of STN, partial synaptic failure of efferent projections, or excitation of inhibitory afferent axons even though the underlying methods of action may be quite different for the different mechanisms
Dual Skipping Networks
Inspired by the recent neuroscience studies on the left-right asymmetry of
the human brain in processing low and high spatial frequency information, this
paper introduces a dual skipping network which carries out coarse-to-fine
object categorization. Such a network has two branches to simultaneously deal
with both coarse and fine-grained classification tasks. Specifically, we
propose a layer-skipping mechanism that learns a gating network to predict
which layers to skip in the testing stage. This layer-skipping mechanism endows
the network with good flexibility and capability in practice. Evaluations are
conducted on several widely used coarse-to-fine object categorization
benchmarks, and promising results are achieved by our proposed network model.Comment: CVPR 2018 (poster); fix typ
An evaluation of a professional learning network for computer science teachers
This paper describes and evaluates aspects of a professional development programme for existing CS teachers in secondary schools (PLAN C) which was designed to support teachers at a time of substantial curricular change. The paper’s particular focus is on the formation of a teacher professional development network across several hundred teachers and a wide geographical area. Evidence from a series of observations and teacher surveys over a two-year period is analysed with respect to the project’s programme theory in order to illustrate not only whether it worked as intended, by why. Results indicate that the PLAN C design has been successful in increasing teachers’ professional confidence and appears to have catalysed powerful change in attitudes to learning. Presentation of challenging pedagogical content knowledge and conceptual frameworks, high-quality teacher-led professional dialogue, along with the space for reflection and classroom trials, triggered examination of the teachers’ own current practices
