A Mobile Geo-Communication Dataset for Physiology-Aware DASH in Rural Ambulance Transport
Use of telecommunication technologies for remote, continuous monitoring of
patients can enhance effectiveness of emergency ambulance care during transport
from rural areas to a regional center hospital. However, the communication
along the various routes in rural areas may have wide bandwidth ranges from 2G
to 4G; some regions may have only lower satellite bandwidth available.
Bandwidth fluctuation together with real-time communication of various clinical
multimedia pose a major challenge during rural patient ambulance transport.;
AB@The availability of a pre-transport route-dependent communication bandwidth
database is an important resource in remote monitoring and clinical multimedia
transmission in rural ambulance transport. Here, we present a geo-communication
dataset from extensive profiling of 4 major US mobile carriers in Illinois,
from the rural location of Hoopeston to the central referral hospital center at
Urbana. In collaboration with Carle Foundation Hospital, we developed a
profiler, and collected various geographical and communication traces for
realistic emergency rural ambulance transport scenarios. Our dataset is to
support our ongoing work of proposing "physiology-aware DASH", which is
particularly useful for adaptive remote monitoring of critically ill patients
in emergency rural ambulance transport. It provides insights on ensuring higher
Quality of Service (QoS) for most critical clinical multimedia in response to
changes in patients' physiological states and bandwidth conditions. Our dataset

Curated routes: the project of developing experiential tracks in sub-urban landscape
The Curated Routes project reflects on the visiting routes’ ability to make apparent the internal characteristics of urban environments. The project’s name allude to the intellectual function of curation and the materiality of routes. Curate deals with the practice of arranging material –tangible or intangible- in a way that a new understanding of an area is revealed. The word routes refers to the linear associations that link places and guide movement. The Curated Routes aim to reinforce the development of bonding ties between people and urban environments by re-constructing the way we visit and explore a place.
The overall goal of the project is to outline the conceptual guidelines of a visitors’ guide that could later be used for the development of the informatics model. The project follows the methodology that the context-aware routes apply, though particular attention is paid to the second phase of the process where an innovative approach is applied. The introduction of the “chronotope” filters enables us to “knit” the terrestrial route to a range of informative storylines, and hence to develop different interpretations of an urban environment
Towards More Data-Aware Application Integration (extended version)
Although most business application data is stored in relational databases,
programming languages and wire formats in integration middleware systems are
not table-centric. Due to costly format conversions, data-shipments and faster
computation, the trend is to "push-down" the integration operations closer to
the storage representation.
We address the alternative case of defining declarative, table-centric
integration semantics within standard integration systems. For that, we replace
the current operator implementations for the well-known Enterprise Integration
Patterns by equivalent "in-memory" table processing, and show a practical
realization in a conventional integration system for a non-reliable,
"data-intensive" messaging example. The results of the runtime analysis show
that table-centric processing is promising already in standard, "single-record"
message routing and transformations, and can potentially excel the message

Capacity Based Evacuation with Dynamic Exit Signs
Exit paths in buildings are designed to minimise evacuation time when the
building is at full capacity. We present an evacuation support system which
does this regardless of the number of evacuees. The core concept is to even-out
congestion in the building by diverting evacuees to less-congested paths in
order to make maximal usage of all accessible routes throughout the entire
evacuation process. The system issues a set of flow-optimal routes using a
capacity-constrained routing algorithm which anticipates evolutions in path
metrics using the concept of "future capacity reservation". In order to direct
evacuees in an intuitive manner whilst implementing the routing algorithm's
scheme, we use dynamic exit signs, i.e. whose pointing direction can be
controlled. To make this system practical and minimise reliance on sensors
during the evacuation, we use an evacuee mobility model and make several
assumptions on the characteristics of the evacuee flow. We validate this
concept using simulations, and show how the underpinning assumptions may limit
the system's performance, especially in low-headcount evacuations
On Energy Efficient Hierarchical Cross-Layer Design: Joint Power Control and Routing for Ad Hoc Networks
In this paper, a hierarchical cross-layer design approach is proposed to
increase energy efficiency in ad hoc networks through joint adaptation of
nodes' transmitting powers and route selection. The design maintains the
advantages of the classic OSI model, while accounting for the cross-coupling
between layers, through information sharing. The proposed joint power control
and routing algorithm is shown to increase significantly the overall energy
efficiency of the network, at the expense of a moderate increase in complexity.
Performance enhancement of the joint design using multiuser detection is also
investigated, and it is shown that the use of multiuser detection can increase
the capacity of the ad hoc network significantly for a given level of energy

Connection men, pushers and migrant trajectories: examining the dynamics of the migration industry in Ghana and along routes into Europe and the Gulf States
This paper examines the inner workings and operational logic of the array of individuals, agencies, state and non-state actors, institutions and social networks that collectively make up the migration industry in Ghana. It sheds light on how actors in the migration industry facilitate and condition migrant mobility, focusing on workers moving from Ghana along two migration corridors towards Europe and the Gulf States for work in the domestic and construction sectors. The study draws on a broad and nuanced conceptualisation of the “migration industry” which goes beyond a narrow focus on actors operating mainly for financial gain. Instead, it focuses on migration not just as a movement from point of departure to arrival, but as a changing journey over both space and time. This allows not
only empirical insights into the processes through which people move, but it also provides an analytical lens to better unpack the complexities of migration processes. We extend the analysis of migration industries by incorporating risk theory into the analysis of the migration decision. The
decision takes place in a context where migrants’ high level of knowledge about the dangers of migration has not translated into a reduction in migration flows on these two corridors. We analyse migrants’ rationale for choosing to embark on highly risky journeys, even in the face of increasing knowledge about these risks, and to develop appropriate policy responses
