    Design by searching : a system for creating and evaluating complex architectural assemblies

The key motivation is to develop software tools that support a feasible industrial process while providing home consumers with a way to conceive of and design spaces, as an alternative to the standardized commodity solutions that are currently available. The basic mode of operation for this work is to combine the structure of the modern computational search with emerging building modeling technologies as a foundation for Web-based participative design tools. Object-oriented component representations have been utilized to build a solution space that can be searched directly, without indexing. Additionally, conceptual query interfaces have been designed and evaluated through interviews with volunteer users.     Symbolic and Visual Retrieval of Mathematical Notation using Formula Graph Symbol Pair Matching and Structural Alignment

    Large data collections containing millions of math formulae in different formats are available on-line. Retrieving math expressions from these collections is challenging. We propose a framework for retrieval of mathematical notation using symbol pairs extracted from visual and semantic representations of mathematical expressions on the symbolic domain for retrieval of text documents. We further adapt our model for retrieval of mathematical notation on images and lecture videos. Graph-based representations are used on each modality to describe math formulas. For symbolic formula retrieval, where the structure is known, we use symbol layout trees and operator trees. For image-based formula retrieval, since the structure is unknown we use a more general Line of Sight graph representation. Paths of these graphs define symbol pairs tuples that are used as the entries for our inverted index of mathematical notation. Our retrieval framework uses a three-stage approach with a fast selection of candidates as the first layer, a more detailed matching algorithm with similarity metric computation in the second stage, and finally when relevance assessments are available, we use an optional third layer with linear regression for estimation of relevance using multiple similarity scores for final re-ranking. Our model has been evaluated using large collections of documents, and preliminary results are presented for videos and cross-modal search. The proposed framework can be adapted for other domains like chemistry or technical diagrams where two visually similar elements from a collection are usually related to each other

    Information retrieval and text mining technologies for chemistry

    Efficient access to chemical information contained in scientific literature, patents, technical reports, or the web is a pressing need shared by researchers and patent attorneys from different chemical disciplines. Retrieval of important chemical information in most cases starts with finding relevant documents for a particular chemical compound or family. Targeted retrieval of chemical documents is closely connected to the automatic recognition of chemical entities in the text, which commonly involves the extraction of the entire list of chemicals mentioned in a document, including any associated information. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth description of fundamental concepts, technical implementations, and current technologies for meeting these information demands. A strong focus is placed on community challenges addressing systems performance, more particularly CHEMDNER and CHEMDNER patents tasks of BioCreative IV and V, respectively. Considering the growing interest in the construction of automatically annotated chemical knowledge bases that integrate chemical information and biological data, cheminformatics approaches for mapping the extracted chemical names into chemical structures and their subsequent annotation together with text mining applications for linking chemistry with biological information are also presented.     The communication and recording of conceptual design information by the inclusion of visual data

    This thesis reports the results of a three year, full-time research project investigating the generation and communication of product descriptions within the conceptual phase of the engineering design process. The research pays particular attention to the role played by the designer's sketch in communicating new product ideas. The investigation commences with a literature review of existing design process models (Chapter 2), which helps to define the area under investigation while presenting modern views of the process in relation to classic examples from established design research. Chapter 3 presents a literature review of the methods currently used to support communication of product descriptions. These methods of Specification are assessed and particular attention is given to new computer-based recording methods such as DOORS and Cradle. Suggestions for improving the efficiency of such models are put forward and the text-only bias of such systems is identified. This comparison of the existing systems thus identifies the research questions. Having identified the possible improvement to be gained by the incorporation of visual material in addition to the universal text description, Chapter 4 presents a literature review assessing the roles of the conceptual sketch in engineering design. As well as presenting views of drawing from philosophical, psychological and scientific standpoints, this section compares attempts made to support the engineer's sketching activity by computer means. This chapter concludes that efforts made to provide effective computer support of sketching by freehand methods are preferred to attempts made to replicate the process with current computer tools. The resulting research experiment, the methodology of which is described in Chapter 5, uses students from the final year of the Product Design Engineering course at Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow. The main aim of the experiment is to identify means of including sketching within the kind of text-based support methods discussed in Chapter 3. It also observes the volume and pattern of information produced by sketch activity throughout the conceptual stages of the design process and aims to find methods which would enable sketches to indicate the general progress of a design.     This volume contains the papers presented at the Sixth Portuguese XML Conference, called XATA (XML, AplicaçÔes e Tecnologias Associadas), held in Évora, Portugal, 14-15 February, 2008. The conference followed on from a successful series held throughout Portugal in the last years: XATA2003 was held in Braga, XATA2004 was held in Porto, XATA2005 was held in Braga, XATA2006 was held in Portalegre and XATA2007 was held in Lisboa. Dued to research evaluation criteria that are being used to evaluate researchers and research centers national conferences are becoming deserted. Many did not manage to gather enough submissions to proceed in this scenario. XATA made it through. However with a large decrease in the number of submissions. In this edition a special meeting will join the steering committee with some interested attendees to discuss XATA's future: internationalization, conference model, ... We think XATA is important in the national context. It has succeeded in gathering and identifying a comunity that shares the same research interests and has promoted some colaborations. We want to keep "the wheel spinning"... This edition has its program distributed by first day's afternoon and next day's morning. This way we are facilitating travel arrangements and we will have one night to meet

It was organised by the Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and the Library of Congress, through the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program - NDIIP partners. The conference topics were related to digital libraries, digital preservation and the changing paradigms, focussing on user needs and expectations, analysing how to involve users and the cultural heritage community in creating and sharing digital resources.     Searching for Art Records: A Log Analysis of the Ackland Art Museum's Collection Search System

    Search log data from the Ackland Art Museum's online collection search system was analyzed in order to determine the search categories most frequently employed by users of the system. The data consisted of a total of 16,729 actions and 3,459 search sessions. It covered a three-month time period from February 19 to May 19, 2015. Analysis of actions associated with the Ackland's advanced search feature suggest that the department, classification, and artist fields have the highest usage while searchers rarely submit queries relating to a work's particular medium (2.55%). Review of the most common queries submitted by users reveals that search terms most commonly relate to representational subjects visually presented in a work of art rather than formal titles. Investigation into how users alter the queries they submit throughout a search session indicates that users often do not change categories during a search session, but primarily make parallel changes (68.11%).Master of Science in Information Scienc

    Shape Retrieval Methods for Architectural 3D Models

    This thesis introduces new methods for content-based retrieval of architecture-related 3D models. We thereby consider two different overall types of architectural 3D models. The first type consists of context objects that are used for detailed design and decoration of 3D building model drafts. This includes e.g. furnishing for interior design or barriers and fences for forming the exterior environment. The second type consists of actual building models. To enable efficient content-based retrieval for both model types that is tailored to the user requirements of the architectural domain, type-specific algorithms must be developed. On the one hand, context objects like furnishing that provide similar functions (e.g. seating furniture) often share a similar shape. Nevertheless they might be considered to belong to different object classes from an architectural point of view (e.g. armchair, elbow chair, swivel chair). The differentiation is due to small geometric details and is sometimes only obvious to an expert from the domain. Building models on the other hand are often distinguished according to the underlying floor- and room plans. Topological floor plan properties for example serve as a starting point for telling apart residential and commercial buildings. The first contribution of this thesis is a new meta descriptor for 3D retrieval that combines different types of local shape descriptors using a supervised learning approach. The approach enables the differentiation of object classes according to small geometric details and at the same time integrates expert knowledge from the field of architecture. We evaluate our approach using a database containing arbitrary 3D models as well as on one that only consists of models from the architectural domain. We then further extend our approach by adding a sophisticated shape descriptor localization strategy. Additionally, we exploit knowledge about the spatial relationship of object components to further enhance the retrieval performance. In the second part of the thesis we introduce attributed room connectivity graphs (RCGs) as a means to characterize a 3D building model according to the structure of its underlying floor plans. We first describe how RCGs are inferred from a given building model and discuss how substructures of this graph can be queried efficiently. We then introduce a new descriptor denoted as Bag-of-Attributed-Subgraphs that transforms attributed graphs into a vector-based representation using subgraph embeddings. We finally evaluate the retrieval performance of this new method on a database consisting of building models with different floor plan types. All methods presented in this thesis are aimed at an as automated as possible workflow for indexing and retrieval such that only minimum human interaction is required. Accordingly, only polygon soups are required as inputs which do not need to be manually repaired or structured. Human effort is only needed for offline groundtruth generation to enable supervised learning and for providing information about the orientation of building models and the unit of measurement used for modeling
