    Towards robust cross-domain domain adaptation for part-of-speech tagging

    Most systems in natural language processing experience a substantial loss in performance when the data that the system is tested with differs significantly from the data that the system has been trained on. Systems for part-of-speech (POS) tagging, for example, are typically trained on newspaper texts but are often applied to texts of other domains such as medical texts. Domain adaptation (DA) techniques seek to improve such systems so that they are able to achieve consistently good performance - independent of the domains at hand. We investigate the robustness of domain adaptation representations and methods across target domains using part-of-speech tagging as a case study. We find that there is no single representation and method that works equally well for all target domains. In particular, there are large differences between target domains that are more similar to the source domain and those that are less similar

    What to do about non-standard (or non-canonical) language in NLP

    Real world data differs radically from the benchmark corpora we use in natural language processing (NLP). As soon as we apply our technologies to the real world, performance drops. The reason for this problem is obvious: NLP models are trained on samples from a limited set of canonical varieties that are considered standard, most prominently English newswire. However, there are many dimensions, e.g., socio-demographics, language, genre, sentence type, etc. on which texts can differ from the standard. The solution is not obvious: we cannot control for all factors, and it is not clear how to best go beyond the current practice of training on homogeneous data from a single domain and language. In this paper, I review the notion of canonicity, and how it shapes our community's approach to language. I argue for leveraging what I call fortuitous data, i.e., non-obvious data that is hitherto neglected, hidden in plain sight, or raw data that needs to be refined. If we embrace the variety of this heterogeneous data by combining it with proper algorithms, we will not only produce more robust models, but will also enable adaptive language technology capable of addressing natural language variation.Comment: KONVENS 201

    A Robust Transformation-Based Learning Approach Using Ripple Down Rules for Part-of-Speech Tagging

    In this paper, we propose a new approach to construct a system of transformation rules for the Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging task. Our approach is based on an incremental knowledge acquisition method where rules are stored in an exception structure and new rules are only added to correct the errors of existing rules; thus allowing systematic control of the interaction between the rules. Experimental results on 13 languages show that our approach is fast in terms of training time and tagging speed. Furthermore, our approach obtains very competitive accuracy in comparison to state-of-the-art POS and morphological taggers.Comment: Version 1: 13 pages.     Entity Recognition at First Sight: Improving NER with Eye Movement Information

    Previous research shows that eye-tracking data contains information about the lexical and syntactic properties of text, which can be used to improve natural language processing models. In this work, we leverage eye movement features from three corpora with recorded gaze information to augment a state-of-the-art neural model for named entity recognition (NER) with gaze embeddings. These corpora were manually annotated with named entity labels. Moreover, we show how gaze features, generalized on word type level, eliminate the need for recorded eye-tracking data at test time. The gaze-augmented models for NER using token-level and type-level features outperform the baselines. We present the benefits of eye-tracking features by evaluating the NER models on both individual datasets as well as in cross-domain settings.Comment: Accepted at NAACL-HLT 201

    Polyglot: Distributed Word Representations for Multilingual NLP

    Distributed word representations (word embeddings) have recently contributed to competitive performance in language modeling and several NLP tasks. In this work, we train word embeddings for more than 100 languages using their corresponding Wikipedias. We quantitatively demonstrate the utility of our word embeddings by using them as the sole features for training a part of speech tagger for a subset of these languages. We find their performance to be competitive with near state-of-art methods in English, Danish and Swedish. Moreover, we investigate the semantic features captured by these embeddings through the proximity of word groupings.
