    Texture Segregation By Visual Cortex: Perceptual Grouping, Attention, and Learning

    A neural model is proposed of how laminar interactions in the visual cortex may learn and recognize object texture and form boundaries. The model brings together five interacting processes: region-based texture classification, contour-based boundary grouping, surface filling-in, spatial attention, and object attention. The model shows how form boundaries can determine regions in which surface filling-in occurs; how surface filling-in interacts with spatial attention to generate a form-fitting distribution of spatial attention, or attentional shroud; how the strongest shroud can inhibit weaker shrouds; and how the winning shroud regulates learning of texture categories, and thus the allocation of object attention. The model can discriminate abutted textures with blurred boundaries and is sensitive to texture boundary attributes like discontinuities in orientation and texture flow curvature as well as to relative orientations of texture elements. The model quantitatively fits a large set of human psychophysical data on orientation-based textures. Object boundar output of the model is compared to computer vision algorithms using a set of human segmented photographic images. The model classifies textures and suppresses noise using a multiple scale oriented filterbank and a distributed Adaptive Resonance Theory (dART) classifier. The matched signal between the bottom-up texture inputs and top-down learned texture categories is utilized by oriented competitive and cooperative grouping processes to generate texture boundaries that control surface filling-in and spatial attention. Topdown modulatory attentional feedback from boundary and surface representations to early filtering stages results in enhanced texture boundaries and more efficient learning of texture within attended surface regions. Surface-based attention also provides a self-supervising training signal for learning new textures. Importance of the surface-based attentional feedback in texture learning and classification is tested using a set of textured images from the Brodatz micro-texture album.     A Study of the Texture Measurement Definition Problem (Image Analysis).

    The problem of texture measurement definition is studied. A theory is presented in order to overcome the problem. This theory includes a conceptual framework for the general measurement definition problem. This framework is based on the concepts of a perceptual transform, a perceptual space, a measurement transform and a similarity transform. Using this conceptual framework and a particular choice for the similarity transform, a set of requirements are defined. These requirements can be used to create a formal method for defining measurements off the GLC matrices. The formal procedure is based on preserving perceptual relationships among textures. To apply this technique a perceptual norm, a least-squares procedure and a synthesis procedure are needed. Each of these components are investigated and the motivation for selecting each of the methods used is presented. Individually, these components are tested in order to see if they are appropriate for use with our technique. Finally, a feasibility study is discussed to demonstrate the possibility of using this technique to solve for measurements. The problem was to define measurements given a limited number of textures. The defined measurements are studied in order to establish their contributions. It is shown that the newly defined measurements are gauging the periodicity and the symmetry of patterns, perceptual entities that have been demonstrated to be important in the human vision system

    A survey of exemplar-based texture synthesis

    Exemplar-based texture synthesis is the process of generating, from an input sample, new texture images of arbitrary size and which are perceptually equivalent to the sample. The two main approaches are statistics-based methods and patch re-arrangement methods. In the first class, a texture is characterized by a statistical signature; then, a random sampling conditioned to this signature produces genuinely different texture images. The second class boils down to a clever "copy-paste" procedure, which stitches together large regions of the sample. Hybrid methods try to combine ideas from both approaches to avoid their hurdles. The recent approaches using convolutional neural networks fit to this classification, some being statistical and others performing patch re-arrangement in the feature space. They produce impressive synthesis on various kinds of textures. Nevertheless, we found that most real textures are organized at multiple scales, with global structures revealed at coarse scales and highly varying details at finer ones. Thus, when confronted with large natural images of textures the results of state-of-the-art methods degrade rapidly, and the problem of modeling them remains wide open.Comment: v2: Added comments and typos fixes.     Laplacian-Steered Neural Style Transfer

    Neural Style Transfer based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) aims to synthesize a new image that retains the high-level structure of a content image, rendered in the low-level texture of a style image. This is achieved by constraining the new image to have high-level CNN features similar to the content image, and lower-level CNN features similar to the style image. However in the traditional optimization objective, low-level features of the content image are absent, and the low-level features of the style image dominate the low-level detail structures of the new image. Hence in the synthesized image, many details of the content image are lost, and a lot of inconsistent and unpleasing artifacts appear. As a remedy, we propose to steer image synthesis with a novel loss function: the Laplacian loss. The Laplacian matrix ("Laplacian" in short), produced by a Laplacian operator, is widely used in computer vision to detect edges and contours. The Laplacian loss measures the difference of the Laplacians, and correspondingly the difference of the detail structures, between the content image and a new image. It is flexible and compatible with the traditional style transfer constraints. By incorporating the Laplacian loss, we obtain a new optimization objective for neural style transfer named Lapstyle. Minimizing this objective will produce a stylized image that better preserves the detail structures of the content image and eliminates the artifacts. Experiments show that Lapstyle produces more appealing stylized images with less artifacts, without compromising their "stylishness".Comment: Accepted by the ACM Multimedia Conference (MM) 2017. 9 pages, 65 figure
