    Towards Objectives-Based Process Redesign

    Get PDF
Continuously growing and changing multinational companies oftentimes struggle with heterogeneous degrees of standardization.Especially in case of redesigning business processes that have been historically grown over decades, the capability of handlingsemi-structures process is central. Nevertheless, for competitive advantages, it is essential for a company to work on the optimizationof all processes. Existing redesign techniques either focus on completely unstructured or structured processes. TheRedesign Model presented in this paper transforms processes with any level of structuredness into processes with an increaseddegree of standardization. Our technique consists of four main steps: (i) we extract the objectives for an efficient business processredesign from existing literature; (ii) we formulate a list of requirements an innovative redesign model has to fulfill; (iii) wepresent a design science based Business Process Redesign Framework including our Redesign model; (iv) we evaluate our modelshowing its applicability and completeness

An ‘objective-centred’ approach to course redesign: using learning objectives to integrate e-learning

    Get PDF
This article describes the process of integrating e-learning into the M-level research methods course Research Synthesis for Policy and Practice. It explores an ‘objective-centred’ approach to course redesign. This entails using learning objectives as the basis for developing online activities and integrating technological tools. This article describes what this ‘objectives approach’ meant in practice and illustrates the importance of learning objectives for the redesign process. Embedding elearning into the course provides new opportunities to meet existing objectives in an innovative, and hopefully more effective, way. Technological tools provide the scope to extend and develop new learning objectives to better meet the needs of students. Whilst objectives are central to the redesign, the article highlights the significant role played by other types of knowledge, namely tutor experience, student views and research

Innovation and research in organic farming: A multi‐level approach to facilitate cooperation among stakeholders

    Get PDF
A wider range of stakeholders is expected to be involved in organic research. A decision‐support tool is needed to define priorities and to allocate tasks among institutions. Based on research and management experience in organic research, the authors have developed a framework for experimental and research projects. The framework is based on a multi‐level approach. Each level is defined according to the directness of the innovation impact on the organic systems. The projects carried out for each level were assessed over a ten-year period. Two applications are presented: analysis of crop protection strategies in horticulture and plant breeding programmes. When combined with four development models of organic farming, this multi‐level analysis appears to be promising for defining research agendas

A managerial modernization model in crisis conditions

    Get PDF
The improvement of the economic performances of Romanian enterprises facing crisis conditions could be achieved by means of promoting and implementing a range of managerial modernization methods. Among them we mention several factors pertaining to strategic management: redesigning the managerial system, implementing methodological management – with an emphasis on profit center management and other managerial tools which ensure process and organizational flexibility – and professionalizing the management and managers. Based on the aforementioned factors, the model we put forth aims at increasing the management’s role in achieving reasonable levels of efficiency and effectiveness.managerial modernization, managerial redesign, methodological management, strategic management, profit center management, performance.

Redesign optimization for manufacturing using additive layer techniques

    Get PDF
Improvements in additive manufacturing technologies have the potential to greatly provide value to designers that could also contribute towards improving the sustainability levels of products as well as the production of lightweight products. With these improvements, it is possible to eliminate the design restrictions previously faced by manufacturers. This study examines the principles of additive manufacturing, design guidelines, capabilities of the manufacturing processes and structural optimisation using topology optimisation. Furthermore, a redesign methodology is proposed and illustrated through a redesign case study of an existing bracket. The optimal design is selected using multi-criteria decision analysis method. The challenges for using additive manufacturing technologies are discussed

Concepts of Landscape Redesign - A Background Paper

A recent report prepared for the Australian Conservation Foundation and National Farmers Federation states that there is a need for the development of new production systems that are in tune with the needs of the natural environment. It is this need that has prompted the concept of landscape redesign, a challenge to develop profitable and environmentally sustainable land use options that help attain desired future landscapes. Natural resource managers are only starting to grapple with how Australian landscapes can be managed, or where appropriate redesigned, to achieve improved outcomes. There are many unanswered questions relating to landscape redesign. These represent the range of unknowns that need to be addressed to permit effective scientific research, policy formulation and on-ground change. These questions resurface throughout the remainder of this paper.Australia;landscape;natural resource management;agriculture

Navigating Through the Maze of Business Process Change Methods

    Get PDF
Business Process Management (BPM) is an approach adopted by many organizations for improving their business processes in order to serve their customers more efficiently and effectively. Literature on BPM offers a plethora of methods used as a guide when improving business processes. Some are promoted as methods for process reengineering, while others as methods for improvement, redesign, or innovation. The number of BPM methods is overwhelming, such that organizations are faced with the challenge to select one that best fits their needs. In this paper, we follow a systematic literature review approach to investigate the characteristics of existing BPM methods. We find that the ambition, nature and perspective of the methods are important to determine whether they can be used for radical or incremental process change. Our findings point to the lack of research done on methods for radical process change

Managing by values in the next milenium: Cultural redesign for strategic organizational change

The system of beliefs and values, that shaped the model for management and organizations during the 20th century, is just not good enough today. In order to keep a business functioning well and competing successfully in markets that are increasingly more global, complex, professionally demanding, constantly changing and oriented towards quality and customer satisfaction a new model is needed. In this paper, we will propose that both Management by Instructions (MBI) and Management by Objectives (MBO) today give notoriously inadequate results. By contrast, description of a new approach labeled: Management by Values (MBV), seem to be emerging as a strategic leadership tool. The paper outlines this approach and discusses the implementation of MBV as a tool to redesign culture in organizations and prepare them for the next millenium.Managing by values, management in new milenium, strategic leadership
