    Get PDF
The goal of this report is to help family offices ask the right questions as they contemplate their path into impact investing. It is important to recognize that impact investing may not suit all investors. There will be family offices which conclude impact investing is not appropriate at this stage for them. While we are passionate about the potential of impact investing, we acknowledge the best future for the sector is where each investor can make informed choices about their own best interest. Each investor and investment institution needs to evaluate if impact investing fits with its needs, interests and unique context. It is with that in mind that we offer this report as a resource and tool that family offices can use to begin the conversations internally, to craft and design their own engagement strategy on impact investing with family members, advisers and potential investees, as well as to ensure that not only is their wealth growing in value, but also that their wealth can reflect their values

Towards a personal best : a case for introducing ipsative assessment in higher education

    Get PDF
The central role that assessment plays is recognised in higher education, in particular how formative feedback guides learning. A model for effective feedback practice is used to argue that, in current schemes, formative feedback is often not usable because it is strongly linked to external criteria and standards, rather than to the processes of learning. By contrast, ipsative feedback, which is based on a comparison with the learner's previous performance and linked to longterm progress, is likely to be usable and may have additional motivational effects. After recommending a move towards ipsative formative assessment, a further step would be ipsative grading. However, such a radical shift towards a fully ipsative regime might pose new problems and these are discussed. The article explores a compromise of a combined assessment regime. The rewards for learners are potentially high, and the article concludes that ipsative assessment is well worth further investigation. © 2011 Society for Research into Higher Education

    Get PDF
This paper integrates a large literature on intra-organisational relationships with the aim to understand how to enhance coordination between different functional units inside an organisation and to empirically examine the impact of inter functional coordination on marketing performance. By drawing on the Motivation/Ability/Opportunity (MAO) theoretical framework, this research attempts to examine factors to enhance employees? motivation/ability/opportunity to coordinate on improving inter functional coordination. The research also empirically examined the impact of inter functional coordination on marketing performance in terms of adaptiveness, effectiveness, efficiency and creativity of marketing programmes. The research conceptual model was tested with data collected from 274 structured surveys in medium to large Egyptian firms. Regression analysis was employed as a tool for testing the research hypotheses. The research findings suggest that the use of cross functional teams, resource dependency, joint reward systems, management support, positively affect the level of inter functional coordination. The research also showed that some factors, for example employees? interpersonal skills, might hinder coordination between functional units and these issues should be resolved in order to establish an effective inter functional coordination. The research provides empirical evidence of the direct positive impact of inter functional coordination on marketing performance

Aristotle on Virtue of Character and the Authority of Reason

I argue that, for Aristotle, virtue of character is a state of the non-rational part of the soul that makes one prone to making and acting on decisions in virtue of that part’s standing in the right relation to (correct) reason, namely, a relation that qualifies the agent as a true self-lover. In effect, this central feature of virtue of character is nothing else than love of practical wisdom. As I argue, it not only explains how reason can hold direct authority over non-rational desires but also why Aristotle defines virtue of character as hexis prohairetikē

Musical Motivation: Towards a model synthesising the research

    Get PDF
This article explores motivation to participate in music making activities. It examines historical and current theories of motivation and sets out a model describing the way that the characteristics of the individual including, personality, self-concept and personal goals interact with the environment to influence motivation and subsequent behaviour. The environment may include culture and sub-cultures, society, time, place, institutions, family and peers and the rewards and punishments that these offer. The article then explores research relating to motivation to actively participate in music. This supports the notion that musical motivation is determined by complex interactions between the individual and the environment within which they find themselves. The article concludes with a consideration of directions for future research
