    FPGAs in Industrial Control Applications

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technologies and their contribution to industrial control applications. Authors start by addressing various research fields which can exploit the advantages of FPGAs. The features of these devices are then presented, followed by their corresponding design tools. To illustrate the benefits of using FPGAs in the case of complex control applications, a sensorless motor controller has been treated. This controller is based on the Extended Kalman Filter. Its development has been made according to a dedicated design methodology, which is also discussed. The use of FPGAs to implement artificial intelligence-based industrial controllers is then briefly reviewed. The final section presents two short case studies of Neural Network control systems designs targeting FPGAs

AbstractThis paper reports a work-in progress at the SOLVE, Students Online Laboratory Through Virtual Instrumentation, at the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka on the design and implementation of a remote lab utilizing emerging technologies. The paper focuses on the basic implementation of a remote laboratory using the publisher-subscriber architecture. Control system and Vibration experiments were chosen for practical implementation which could be monitored and controlled by students using internet. This enabled the remote users to gain a better understanding of the concept of vibrations and control system by performing the real experiment at a time and place of their choice. Both publisher and subscriber were developed using LabVIEW and SCCT add-on for communication. SCCT provides high performance data communication on conventional platforms like LabVIEW, Android, HMTL5, Java, JavaScript, thereby making it multiplatform approach. The method followed for data acquisition by the experimental server, architecture followed at the publisher and subscriber end, brief description about the performable experiments is explained in the present paper

Experimental setup for light-to-heat NIR conversion measurements of gold nano-particles\u2019 solutions

In recent years, there is a constantly increasing interest in the application of nanoparticles for cancer diagnosis and cancer therapy. In this respect, the most promising nano-objects at present are the gold nanoparticles. A very convenient and powerful property of these objects is their ability to increase their temperature under electro-magnetic irradiation with certain wavelength. In our research we have directed our efforts toward particular nano-objects specifically sensitive to electromagnetic radiation in the near-infrared region (NIR). In order to study the photothermic properties of the solutions of gold nanoparticles in the NIR we constructed a specific electronic setup consisting of a laser system with interchangeable laser diodes with different wavelength NIR light, a thermally-insulated cuvette-holder compartment with temperature measuring probes and a NIR spectrometer to control the stimulated fluorescence emission of the nanoparticles\u2019 solutions. The temperature measurement compartment with the thermal-insulated cuvette holder was designed to maintain the solutions\u2019 temperature at a fixed value right before the moment of laser irradiation. To maintain the measurement setup at a fixed temperature before the irradiation we used a thermal stabilized system based on two Peltier cells with electronic temperature control. The temperatures of the ambient air and the temperature of the cuvette walls were continuously measured in order to make corrections about the temperature dissipation during the irradiation

Test platform for electronic control units of high-performance safety-critical multi actuator systems

In this paper we are mostly concerned with the problem of testing electronic control units of synchronized electric power actuators. This task is particularly complex for safety critical applications, where it is crucial that the control system properly reacts in response to the faults, that are hard to reproduce and verify. A cost-effective flexible and reconfigurable test platform is proposed, discussing its architecture and implementation. The proposed system facilitates the phase of definition and development of the electronic control unit, allowing the interfacing towards both hydraulic and electromechanical actuators, and having a high flexibility as regards the I/O signals. Some results, obtained during the laboratory test activity, are also presented
