International audienceIn the era of Industry 4.0, digital manufacturing is evolving into smart manufacturing. This evolution impacts companies in three main areas: organization, people, and technologies. This chapter analyzes the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)—key technologies transforming the physical world into a digitalized physical world. IoT and CPS provide factories with sensing capabilities, perform data and context capture and allow them to act/react to optimize the value chain. We survey the recent state-of-the-art development of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—also known as IoT and CPS in the context of Industry 4.0, from a protocol, architecture, and standard point-of-view. We also explore key challenges and future research directions for extensive industrial adoption of these technologies

The combination of Artificial Intelligence and IoT technologies, the so-called AIoT, is expected to contribute to the sustainability of public and private buildings, particularly in terms of energy management, indoor comfort, as well as in safety and security for the occupants. However, IoT systems deployed on modern buildings may generate big amounts of data that cannot be efficiently analyzed and stored in the Cloud. Fog computing has proven to be a suitable paradigm for distributing computing, storage control, and networking functions closer to the edge of the network along the Cloud-to-Things continuum, improving the efficiency of the IoT applications. Unfortunately, it can be complex to integrate all components to create interoperable AIoT applications. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce interoperable architectures, based on standard and universal frameworks, to distribute consistently the resources and the services of AIoT applications for smart buildings. Thus, the rationale for this study stems from the pressing need to introduce complex computing algorithms aimed at improving indoor comfort, safety, and environmental conditions while optimizing energy consumption in public and private buildings. This article proposes an open multi-layer architecture aimed at smart buildings based on a standard framework, the OpenFog Reference Architecture (IEEE 1934–2018 standard). The proposed architecture was validated experimentally at the Faculty of Engineering of Vitoria-Gasteiz to improve indoor environmental quality using Fuzzy logic. Experimental results proved the viability and scalability of the proposed architecture. The authors wish to express their gratitude to the Basque Government, through the project EKOHEGAZ II; to the Diputación Foral de Álava (DFA), through the project CONAVANTER; to the UPV/EHU, through the projects GIU20/063 and CBL 22APIN; and to the MobilityLab Foundation (CONV23/12), for supporting this work

The SFI Smart Ocean centre has initiated a long-running project which consists of developing a wireless and autonomous marine observation system for monitoring of underwater environments and structures. The increasing popularity of integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) with Cloud Computing has led to promising infrastructures that could realize Smart Ocean's goals. The project will utilize underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) for collecting data in the marine environments and develop a cloud-based platform for retrieving, processing, and storing all the sensor data. Currently, the project is in its early stages and the collaborating partners are researching approaches and technologies that can potentially be utilized. This thesis contributes to the centre's ongoing research, focusing on the aspect of how sensor data can be integrated into three different cloud platforms: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and the Google Cloud Platform. The goals were to develop prototypes that could successfully send data to the chosen cloud platforms and evaluate their applicability in context of the Smart Ocean project. In order to determine the most suitable option, each platform was evaluated based on set of defined criteria, focusing on their sensor data integration capabilities. The thesis has also investigated the cloud platforms' supported protocol bindings, as well as several candidate technologies for metadata standards and compared them in surveys. Our evaluation results shows that all three cloud platforms handle sensor data integration in very similar ways, offering a set of cloud services relevant for creating diverse IoT solutions. However, the Google Cloud Platform ranks at the bottom due to the lack of IoT focus on their platform, with less service options, features, and capabilities compared to the other two. Both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services rank very close to each other, as they provide many of the same sensor data integration capabilities, making them the most applicable options.Masteroppgave i Programutvikling samarbeid med HVLPROG399MAMN-PRO

The incoming digital revolution has the potential to drastically improve our productivity, reduce operational costs and improve the quality of the products. However, the realization of these promises requires the convergence of technologies — from edge computing to cloud, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things — blurring the lines between the physical and digital worlds. Although these technologies evolved independently over time, they are increasingly becoming intertwined. Their convergence will create an unprecedented level of automation, achieved via massive machine-to-machine interactions whose cornerstone are event processing tasks. This thesis explores the intersection of these technologies by making an in-depth analysis of their role in the life-cycle of event processing tasks, including their creation, placement and execution. First, it surveys currently existing Web standards, Internet drafts, and design patterns that are used in the creation of cloud-based event processing. Then, it investigates the reasons for event processing to start shifting towards the edge, alongside with the standards that are necessary for a smooth transition to occur. Finally, this work proposes the use of deep reinforcement learning methods for the placement and distribution of event processing tasks at the edge. Obtained results show that the proposed neural-based event placement method is capable of obtaining (near) optimal solutions in several scenarios and provide hints about future research directions. The research published in this work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through CEOT (Center for Electronic, Optoelectronic and Telecommunications) funding (UID/MULTI/00631/2020) and by FCT Ph.D grant to Andriy Mazayev (SFRH/BD/138836/2018)

Plant-wide interoperability and decoupled, data-driven process control with message bus communication

Conventional industrial communication systems suffer from rigidness, inflexibility and lack of scalability. The environment is heterogeneous as the systems exchange data with a variety communication protocols, some of which are proprietary. This makes it laborious and expensive to reconfigure or upgrade the systems. As the solution, this article proposes a message-bus-based communication architecture to enable information exchange between systems regardless of their geographical location and position within the functional hierarchy of the plant. The architecture not only enables communication to cross the conventional physical borders but also provides scalability to growing data volumes and network sizes. As proofs of concept, the article presents a prototype in three environments: a copper smelter, a steel plant and a distillation column. The results suggest that the message-bus-based approach has potential to renew industrial communications, a core part of the fourth industrial revolution.H2020, 723661, COCO

AbstractA key requirement of realizing the connected world featured by IoT is to ensure interoperability among different connected devices. Interoperability is also at the basis of the realization of the novel vision of Industry 4.0; a lot effort is put to make interoperable the interchange of information between industrial applications, also including IoT ecosystems. For this reason, during these last years, several approaches aimed to enhance interoperability between industrial applications and IoT appeared in the literature. In this paper an interoperability proposal is presented. It is based on the idea to realize interworking between the two standards considered among the reference ones in the industrial and IoT domains. They are the OPC UA for the industrial domain and oneM2M for the IoT. Interworking is realized in such a way to allow industrial applications based on OPC UA to acquire information coming from oneM2M-based IoT devices. The proposal allows an OPC UA Server to publish each piece of information produced by oneM2M-based IoT devices, so that this information may be consumed by industrial applications playing the OPC UA Client role

The chaotic growth of the IoT determined a fragmented landscape with a huge number of devices, technologies, and platforms available on the market, and consequential issues of interoperability on many system deployments. The Web of Things (WoT) architecture recently proposed by the W3C consortium constitutes a novel solution to enable interoperability across IoT Platforms and application domains. At the same time, in order to see an effective improvement, a wide adoption of the W3C WoT solutions from the academic and industrial communities is required; this translates into the need of accurate and complete support tools to ease the deployment of W3C WoT applications, as well as reference guidelines about how to enable the WoT on top of existing IoT scenarios and how to deploy WoT scenarios from scratch. In this thesis, we bring three main contributions for filling such gap: (1) we introduce the WoT Store, a novel platform for managing and easing the deployment of Things and applications on the W3C WoT, and additional strategies for bringing old legacy IoT systems into the WoT. The WoT Store allows the dynamic discovery of the resources available in the environment, i.e. the Things, and to interact with each of them through a dashboard by visualizing their properties, executing commands, or observing the notifications produced. (2) We map three different IoT scenarios to WoT scenarios: a generic heterogeneous environmental monitoring scenario, a structural health monitoring scenario and an Industry4.0 scenario. (3) We make proposals to improve both the W3C standard and the node-wot software stack design: in the first case, new vocabularies are needed in order to handle particular protocols employed in industrial scenarios, while in the second case we present some contributions required for the dynamic instantiation and the migration of Web Things and WoT services in a cloud-to-edge continuum environment

Towards Data Sharing across Decentralized and Federated IoT Data Analytics Platforms

In the past decade the Internet-of-Things concept has overwhelmingly entered all of the fields where data are produced and processed, thus, resulting in a plethora of IoT platforms, typically cloud-based, that centralize data and services management. In this scenario, the development of IoT services in domains such as smart cities, smart industry, e-health, automotive, are possible only for the owner of the IoT deployments or for ad-hoc business one-to-one collaboration agreements. The realization of "smarter" IoT services or even services that are not viable today envisions a complete data sharing with the usage of multiple data sources from multiple parties and the interconnection with other IoT services. In this context, this work studies several aspects of data sharing focusing on Internet-of-Things. We work towards the hyperconnection of IoT services to analyze data that goes beyond the boundaries of a single IoT system. This thesis presents a data analytics platform that: i) treats data analytics processes as services and decouples their management from the data analytics development; ii) decentralizes the data management and the execution of data analytics services between fog, edge and cloud; iii) federates peers of data analytics platforms managed by multiple parties allowing the design to scale into federation of federations; iv) encompasses intelligent handling of security and data usage control across the federation of decentralized platforms instances to reduce data and service management complexity. The proposed solution is experimentally evaluated in terms of performances and validated against use cases. Further, this work adopts and extends available standards and open sources, after an analysis of their capabilities, fostering an easier acceptance of the proposed framework. We also report efforts to initiate an IoT services ecosystem among 27 cities in Europe and Korea based on a novel methodology. We believe that this thesis open a viable path towards a hyperconnection of IoT data and services, minimizing the human effort to manage it, but leaving the full control of the data and service management to the users' will
