    Machine learning in hybrid hierarchical and partial-order planners for manufacturing domains

    The application of AI planning techniques to manufacturing Systems is being widely deployed for all the tasks involved in the process, from product design to production planning and control. One of these problems is the automatic generation of control sequences for the entire manufacturing system in such a way that final plans can be directly use das the sequential control programs which drive the operation of manufacturing systems. Hybis is a hierarchical and nonlinear planner whose goal is to obtain partially ordered plans at such a level of detail that they can be use das sequential control programs for manufacturing systems. Currently, those sequential control programs are being generated by hand using modelling tools. This document describes a work whose aim is to improve the efficiency of solving problems with Hybis by using machine learning techniques. It implements a deductive learning method that is able to automatically acquire control knowledge (heuristics) by generating bounded explanations of the problem solving episodes.     The KB paradigm and its application to interactive configuration

    The knowledge base paradigm aims to express domain knowledge in a rich formal language, and to use this domain knowledge as a knowledge base to solve various problems and tasks that arise in the domain by applying multiple forms of inference. As such, the paradigm applies a strict separation of concerns between information and problem solving. In this paper, we analyze the principles and feasibility of the knowledge base paradigm in the context of an important class of applications: interactive configuration problems. In interactive configuration problems, a configuration of interrelated objects under constraints is searched, where the system assists the user in reaching an intended configuration. It is widely recognized in industry that good software solutions for these problems are very difficult to develop. We investigate such problems from the perspective of the KB paradigm. We show that multiple functionalities in this domain can be achieved by applying different forms of logical inferences on a formal specification of the configuration domain. We report on a proof of concept of this approach in a real-life application with a banking company.     Constraint programming on hierarchical multiprocessor systems

    The work reported in this thesis is about constraint processing in the context of hierarchical multiprocessor systems, including distributed systems. More speci cally, it develops techniques and a system to help bringing the power available in today's multiprocessing networked systems into the constraint processing eld. Solving constraint speci ed problems is a process which lends itself naturally to parallelisation, as it usually implies going through very large search spaces, looking for a solution. Parallel constraint solving draws on the idea of dividing the search space among several workers, so the search may proceed faster, and thanks to the declarative nature of constraint programming, the parallelisation happens transparently as far as the user is concerned. However, to fully take advantage of the parallel computing power available, techniques must be developed to help ensure that the workers executing the search are kept busy at all times, which is an issue tackled by this work; RESUMO: Esta tese debruça-se sobre a programação por restrições no contexto dos sistemas multiprocessador hierárquicos, incluindo os sistemas distribuídos. Mais especificamente, o trabalho elaborado desenvolve as técnicas de resolução de problemas de satisfação de restrições recorrendo ao paralelismo. A actualidade do tema prende-se com a cada vez maior divulgação de que são objecto os sistemas multiprocessador que, juntamente com a omnipresença das redes de computadores, põe à nossa disposição uma capacidade de cálculo que necessita de ser posta a uso, o que tarda em acontecer. Nesta tese desenvolve-se um sistema que permite tirar partido desses recursos através do processamento de restrições A programação por restrições é um paradigma declarativo, em que o utilizador não tem de se preocupar com o controlo da computação, e a introdução de paralelismo nesta área pode realizar-se transparentemente. Por outro lado, o processo de pesquisa de soluções para problemas especificados por restrições adapta-se particularmente bem a ser paralelizado. Este tese apresenta uma abordagem _à resolução paralela de restrições, que junta paralelismo local, sob a forma de trabalhadores, com paralelismo distribuído, em que os actores são as equipas. O sistema construído, destinado a sistemas distribuídos de larga escala, que _é descrito e os seus resultados apresentados, inclui distribuição de trabalho, através de roubo de trabalho. Este funciona, localmente, sem a colaboração do roubado e, remotamente, com colaboração, num ambiente em que todas as equipas cooperam na procura da solução

    Computational Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field that aims to develop computational and mathematical models and methods for decision making concerning the management and allocation of resources in order to help solve environmental problems. This thesis deals with a broad spectrum of such problems (energy efficiency, water management, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption) giving a contribution towards their solution by means of Logic Programming (LP) and Constraint Programming (CP), declarative paradigms from Artificial Intelligence of proven solidity. The problems described in this thesis were proposed by experts of the respective domains and tested on the real data instances they provided. The results are encouraging and show the aptness of the chosen methodologies and approaches. The overall aim of this work is twofold: both to address real world problems in order to achieve practical results and to get, from the application of LP and CP technologies to complex scenarios, feedback and directions useful for their improvement

    Distributed constraint satisfaction for coordinating and integrating a large-scale, heterogeneous enterprise

    Market forces are continuously driving public and private organisations towards higher productivity, shorter process and production times, and fewer labour hours. To cope with these changes, organisations are adopting new organisational models of coordination and cooperation that increase their flexibility, consistency, efficiency, productivity and profit margins. In this thesis an organisational model of coordination and cooperation is examined using a real life example; the technical integration of a distributed large-scale project of an international physics collaboration. The distributed resource constraint project scheduling problem is modelled and solved with the methods of distributed constraint satisfaction. A distributed local search method, the distributed breakout algorithm (DisBO), is used as the basis for the coordination scheme. The efficiency of the local search method is improved by extending it with an incremental problem solving scheme with variable ordering. The scheme is implemented as central algorithm, incremental breakout algorithm (IncBO), and as distributed algorithm, distributed incremental breakout algorithm (DisIncBO). In both cases, strong performance gains are observed for solving underconstrained problems. Distributed local search algorithms are incomplete and lack a termination guarantee. When problems contain hard or unsolvable subproblems and are tightly or overconstrained, local search falls into infinite cycles without explanation. A scheme is developed that identifies hard or unsolvable subproblems and orders these to size. This scheme is based on the constraint weight information generated by the breakout algorithm during search. This information, combined with the graph structure, is used to derive a fail first variable order. Empirical results show that the derived variable order is 'perfect'. When it guides simple backtracking, exceptionally hard problems do not occur, and, when problems are unsolvable, the fail depth is always the shortest. Two hybrid algorithms, BOBT and BOBT-SUSP are developed. When the problem is unsolvable, BOBT returns the minimal subproblem within the search scope and BOBT-SUSP returns the smallest unsolvable subproblem using a powerful weight sum constraint. A distributed hybrid algorithm (DisBOBT) is developed that combines DisBO with DisBT. The distributed hybrid algorithm first attempts to solve the problem with DisBO. If no solution is available after a bounded number of breakouts, DisBO is terminated, and DisBT solves the problem. DisBT is guided by a distributed variable order that is derived from the constraint weight information and the graph structure. The variable order is incrementally established, every time the partial solution needs to be extended, the next variable within the order is identified. Empirical results show strong performance gains, especially when problems are overconstrained and contain small unsolvable subproblems

    Computing explanations for interactive constraint-based systems

    Constraint programming has emerged as a successful paradigm for modelling combinatorial problems arising from practical situations. In many of those situations, we are not provided with an immutable set of constraints. Instead, a user will modify his requirements, in an interactive fashion, until he is satisfied with a solution. Examples of such applications include, amongst others, model-based diagnosis, expert systems, product configurators. The system he interacts with must be able to assist him by showing the consequences of his requirements. Explanations are the ideal tool for providing this assistance. However, existing notions of explanations fail to provide sufficient information. We define new forms of explanations that aim to be more informative. Even if explanation generation is a very hard task, in the applications we consider, we must manage to provide a satisfactory level of interactivity and, therefore, we cannot afford long computational times. We introduce the concept of representative sets of relaxations, a compact set of relaxations that shows the user at least one way to satisfy each of his requirements and at least one way to relax them, and present an algorithm that efficiently computes such sets. We introduce the concept of most soluble relaxations, maximising the number of products they allow. We present algorithms to compute such relaxations in times compatible with interactivity, achieving this by indifferently making use of different types of compiled representations. We propose to generalise the concept of prime implicates to constraint problems with the concept of domain consequences, and suggest to generate them as a compilation strategy. This sets a new approach in compilation, and allows to address explanation-related queries in an efficient way. We define ordered automata to compactly represent large sets of domain consequences, in an orthogonal way from existing compilation techniques that represent large sets of solutions

    AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF DIFFERENT BRANCHING STRATEGIES FOR CONSTRAINT SATISFACTION PROBLEMS

    Many real life problems can be formulated as constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). Backtracking search algorithms are usually employed to solve CSPs and in backtracking search the choice of branching strategies can be critical since they specify how a search algorithm can instantiate a variable and how a problem can be reduced into subproblems; that is, they define a search tree. In spite of the apparent importance of the branching strategy, there have been only a few empirical studies about different branching strategies and they all have been tested exclusively for numerical constraints. In this thesis, we employ the three most commonly used branching strategies in solving finite domain CSPs. These branching strategies are described as follows: first, a branching strategy with strong commitment assigns its variables in the early stage of the search as in k-Way branching; second, 2-Way branching guides a search by branching one side with assigning a variable and the other with eliminating the assigned value; third, the domain splitting strategy, based on the least commitment principle, branches by dividing a variable's domain rather than by assigning a single value to a variable. In our experiments, we compared the efficiency of different branching strategies in terms of their execution times and the number of choice points in solving finite domain CSPs. Interestingly, our experiments provide evidence that the choice of branching strategy for finite domain problems does not matter much in most cases--provided we are using an effective variable ordering heuristic--as domain splitting and 2-Way branching end up simulating k-Way branching. However, for an optimization problem with large domain size, the branching strategy with the least commitment principle can be more efficient than the other strategies. This empirical study will hopefully interest other practitioners to take different branching schemes into consideration in designing heuristics
