    Towards Improving Students’ Forum Posts Categorization in MOOCs and Impact on Performance Prediction

    International audienceGoing beyond mere forum posts categorization is key to understand why some students struggle and eventually fail in MOOCs. We propose here an extension of a coding scheme and present the design of the associated automatic annotation tools to tag students’ questions in their forum posts. Working of four sessions of the same MOOC, we cluster students’ questions and show how the obtained clusters are consistent across all sessions and can be sometimes correlated with students’ success in the MOOC. Moreover, it helps us better understand the nature of questions asked by successful vs. unsuccessful students

    Aligning learning design and learning analytics through instructor involvement: a MOOC case study

    Producción CientíficaThis paper presents the findings of a mixed-methods research that explored the potentials emerging from aligning learning design (LD) and learning analytics (LA) during the design of a predictive analytics solution and from involving the instructors in the design process. The context was a past massive open online course, where the learner data and the instructors were accessible for posterior analysis and additional data collection. Through a close collaboration with the instructors, the details of the prediction task were identified, such as the target variable to predict and the practical constraints to consider. Two predictive models were built: LD-specific model (with features based on the LD and pedagogical intentions), and a generic model (with cumulative features, not informed by the LD). Although the LD-specific predictive model did not outperform the generic one, some LD-driven features were powerful. The quantity and the power of such features were associated with the degree to which the students acted as guided by the LD and pedagogical intentions. The leading instructor’s opinion about the importance of the learning activities in the LD was compared with the results of the feature importance analysis. This comparison helped identify the problems in the LD.     Identification of Affective States in MOOCs: A Systematic Literature Review

    Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a type of online coursewere students have little interaction,  no instructor, and in some cases, no deadlines to finisch assignments. For this reason, a better understanding of student affection in MOOCs is importantant could have potential to open new perspectives for this type of course. The recent popularization of tools, code libraries and algorithms for intensive data analysis made possible collect data from text and interaction with the platforms, which can be used to infer correlations between affection and learning. In this context, a bibliographical review was carried out, considering the period between 2012 and 2018, with the goal of identifying which methods are being to identify affective states. Three databases were used: ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore and Scopus, and 46 papers were found. The articles revealed that the most common methods are related to data intensive techinques (i.e. machine learning, sentiment analysis and, more broadly, learning analytics).     Towards Student Engagement Analytics: Applying Machine Learning to Student Posts in Online Lecture Videos

    The use of online learning environments in higher education is becoming ever more prevalent with the inception of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the increase in online and flipped courses at universities. Although the online systems used to deliver course content make education more accessible, students often express frustration with the lack of assistance during online lecture videos. Instructors express concern that students are not engaging with the course material in online environments, and rely on affordances within these systems to figure out what students are doing. With many online learning environments storing log data about students usage of these systems, research into learning analytics, the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting data about learning and their contexts, can help inform instructors about student learning in the online context. This thesis aims to lay the groundwork for learning analytics that provide instructors high-level student engagement data in online learning environments. Recent research has shown that instructors using these systems are concerned about their lack of awareness about student engagement, and educational psychology has shown that engagement is necessary for student success. Specifically, this thesis explores the feasibility of applying machine learning to categorize student posts by their level of engagement. These engagement categories are derived from the ICAP framework, which categorizes overt student behaviors into four tiers of engagement: Interactive, Constructive, Active, and Passive. Contributions include showing what natural language features are most indicative of engagement, exploring whether this machine learning method can be generalized to many courses, and using previous research to develop mockups of what analytics using data from this machine learning method might look like

    Learning analytics and educational data mining in practice: a systematic literature review of empirical evidence.

    ABSTRACT This paper aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive background for understanding current knowledge on Learning Analytics (LA) and Educational Data Mining (EDM) and its impact on adaptive learning. It constitutes an overview of empirical evidence behind key objectives of the potential adoption of LA/EDM in generic educational strategic planning. We examined the literature on experimental case studies conducted in the domain during the past six years (2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013). Search terms identified 209 mature pieces of research work, but inclusion criteria limited the key studies to 40. We analyzed the research questions, methodology and findings of these published papers and categorized them accordingly. We used non-statistical methods to evaluate and interpret findings of the collected studies. The results have highlighted four distinct major directions of the LA/EDM empirical research. We discuss on the emerged added value of LA/EDM research and highlight the significance of further implications. Finally, we set our thoughts on possible uncharted key questions to investigate both from pedagogical and technical considerations
