Antecedents and outcomes of consumer environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviour

With the intensification of problems relating to the environment, a growing number of consumers are becoming more ecologically conscious in their preferences and purchases of goods. This paper presents the results of a study conducted among 500 Cypriot consumers, focusing on the factors that shape consumer environmental attitudes and behaviour, as well as on the resulting outcomes. The findings confirmed that both the inward and outward environmental attitudes of a consumer are positively influenced by his/her degree of collectivism, long-term orientation, political involvement, deontology, and law obedience, but have no connection with liberalism. The adoption of an inward environmental attitude was also found to be conducive to green purchasing behaviour that ultimately leads to high product satisfaction. On the other hand, an outward environmental attitude facilitates the adoption of a general environmental behaviour, which is responsible for greater satisfaction with life. The findings of the study have important implications for shaping effective company offerings to consumers in target markets, as well as formulating appropriate policies at the governmental level to enhance environmental sensitivity among citizens

The Legal Framework of Employment Relations

The aim of this paper is to reassess the place of labour law in the wider area of employment relations research and to argue the case for labour law's importance to social scientists. We give an analytical account of the principal institutional features of labour law as a form of legal regulation, from an interdisciplinary perspective which takes into account both the internal workings of the labour law system and the social and economic context within which it has evolved. We analyze, in the manner of an internal or 'immanent' critique, the categories which are generally used within labour law discourse to describe the social and economic relations of employment; account for their emergence and evolution in historical terms; consider the origins of their diversity across different national systems; and look at future prospects for convergence or divergence.labour law; employment relations; legal diversity; legal convergence

Capitalism’s Cynical Leviathan: Cynicism, Totalitarianism, and Hobbes in Modern Capitalist Regulation

In this paper I have tried to show the symbiotic relationship between discursive systems of totalitarianism and cynicism. Whether speaking of a social Leviathan a la Hobbes or localized capitalist regulation each relies upon the symbiotic combination of total governance with the positive allowance for internal individual dis-identification. The inherent failures of totalitarian discourses to fully interpellate a subject requires a subjective freedom of thought expressed via an ineffectual cynicism, a point borne witness to in the theoretical work of Zizek. Individuals are thus, either implicitly or explicitly, encouraged to manifest their discontent through a non-active liberty in thought or an “ideology of cynicism” (Zizek: 1989). By providing the space to think resistance these systems are able to legitimately demand and make easier obedience in action. Thus the liberating effect of cynical rebellion is the foundation for an acting compliance

THE EFFECT OF UNDERSTANDING OF TAX ACCOUNTING, SERVICE QUALITY OF TAX OFFICERS, AWARENESS OF TAXPAYERS AND TRANSPARENCY IN TAXATION TOWARD OBEDIENCE OF CORPORATE TAXPAYERS IN BENGKULU CITY

The purpose of the research was to analyze the influence of the understanding of tax accounting, service quality of tax officers, awareness of taxpayers, and transparency in taxation toward obedience of corporate taxpayers in Bengkulu City. The sample were corporate taxpayer in Bengkulu City which taken by simple random sampling. The sample were 50 respondents. The method of the data analysis used multiple regression analysis. The result from the data analysis showed that understanding of tax accounting, the service quality of tax officers, the awareness of taxpayer and transparency taxation had positive and significant effect toward obedience of corporate taxpayers

Japanese manufacturing: strategy and practice

A striking characteristic of Japanese factories is the extent of process control: from both the technical and the social viewpoint the labour and production system is controlled down to the very last detail. The characteristics of management and organization which underlie this are closely interwoven with Japanese culture. This explains why the work content, working conditions and working relationships in the factories look so different from those in western cultures. Commercial Activity’s Contribution to Sustainable Development by Social Responsability Actions: a Vision of SMEs

This paper reports on a small study concerning the development of the social responsibility concept, in order to reveal how this concept became an important element of the sustainable development. According to this relationship, there are presented the results of a qualitative research among small and middle- sized companies involved in commercial activity in Bucharest, to show the way in which their activities of social responsibility meet the national strategy of sustainable development. The conclusions of this paper support the literature in the field, that underlines the fact that small and middle companies involved in commercial activity are concerned mostly with the way they succeed in achieving the economic objectives, and social responsibility is understood more at a minimal level, that are connected with legal obligations. Whistleblowing protection and freedom of speech: Finding respect at the workplace

Does the whistleblower have a place in business and organizations? Being a controversial figure the whistleblower’s journey is full of obstacles. The term is taken from the actions of the English police officers or “bobbies” out on their police beats reacting to the discovery of a commission of a crime where they would blow their whistle. This immediate reaction is to alert the public and other police officers of danger within their midst. Another analogy that could also be the origins of the term is the act of the referee or umpire of a football game who would blow the whistle upon discovery or seeing a foul committed by players in the game. Simply put whistle blowing is an act of correcting once a discovery of wrongdoing has been exercised. The act of a whistleblower is an expression of an important right that is the right to free speech. When an employee voices his concerns over certain issues internal to the organization he/she is exercising a right to freely voice matters that is important for the organization to look into. Justice unbound? Globalisation, states and the transformation of the social bond

Conventional accounts of justice suppose the presence of a stable political society, stable identities, and a Westphalian cartography of clear lines of authority--usually a state--where justice can be realised. They also assume a stable social bond. But what if, in an age of globalisation, the territorial boundaries of politics unbundle and a stable social bond deteriorates? How then are we to think about justice? Can there be justice in a world where that bond is constantly being disrupted or transformed by globalisation? Thus the paper argues that we need to think about the relationship between globalisation, governance and justice. It does so in three stages: (i) It explains how, under conditions of globalisation, assumptions made about the social bond are changing. (ii) It demonsrates how strains on the social bond within states give rise to a search for newer forms of global political theory and organisation and the emergence of new global (non state) actors which contest with states over the policy agendas emanating from globalisation. (iii) Despite the new forms of activity identified at (ii) the paper concludes that the prospects for a satisfactory synthesis of a liberal economic theory of globalisation, a normative political theory of the global public domain and a new social bond are remote
