    Analyzing collaborative learning processes automatically

    In this article we describe the emerging area of text classification research focused on the problem of collaborative learning process analysis both from a broad perspective and more specifically in terms of a publicly available tool set called TagHelper tools. Analyzing the variety of pedagogically valuable facets of learners’ interactions is a time consuming and effortful process. Improving automated analyses of such highly valued processes of collaborative learning by adapting and applying recent text classification technologies would make it a less arduous task to obtain insights from corpus data. This endeavor also holds the potential for enabling substantially improved on-line instruction both by providing teachers and facilitators with reports about the groups they are moderating and by triggering context sensitive collaborative learning support on an as-needed basis. In this article, we report on an interdisciplinary research project, which has been investigating the effectiveness of applying text classification technology to a large CSCL corpus that has been analyzed by human coders using a theory-based multidimensional coding scheme. We report promising results and include an in-depth discussion of important issues such as reliability, validity, and efficiency that should be considered when deciding on the appropriateness of adopting a new technology such as TagHelper tools. One major technical contribution of this work is a demonstration that an important piece of the work towards making text classification technology effective for this purpose is designing and building linguistic pattern detectors, otherwise known as features, that can be extracted reliably from texts and that have high predictive power for the categories of discourse actions that the CSCL community is interested in

    Upper Bounds on the Runtime of the Univariate Marginal Distribution Algorithm on OneMax

    A runtime analysis of the Univariate Marginal Distribution Algorithm (UMDA) is presented on the OneMax function for wide ranges of its parameters ÎŒ\mu and λ\lambda. If Ό≄clog⁥n\mu\ge c\log n for some constant c>0c>0 and λ=(1+Θ(1))ÎŒ\lambda=(1+\Theta(1))\mu, a general bound O(ÎŒn)O(\mu n) on the expected runtime is obtained. This bound crucially assumes that all marginal probabilities of the algorithm are confined to the interval [1/n,1−1/n][1/n,1-1/n]. If Ό≄câ€Čnlog⁥n\mu\ge c' \sqrt{n}\log n for a constant câ€Č>0c'>0 and λ=(1+Θ(1))ÎŒ\lambda=(1+\Theta(1))\mu, the behavior of the algorithm changes and the bound on the expected runtime becomes O(ÎŒn)O(\mu\sqrt{n}), which typically even holds if the borders on the marginal probabilities are omitted. The results supplement the recently derived lower bound Ω(ÎŒn+nlog⁥n)\Omega(\mu\sqrt{n}+n\log n) by Krejca and Witt (FOGA 2017) and turn out as tight for the two very different values ÎŒ=clog⁥n\mu=c\log n and ÎŒ=câ€Čnlog⁥n\mu=c'\sqrt{n}\log n.     Hazard Contribution Modes of Machine Learning Components

    Amongst the essential steps to be taken towards developing and deploying safe systems with embedded learning-enabled components (LECs) i.e., software components that use ma- chine learning (ML)are to analyze and understand the con- tribution of the constituent LECs to safety, and to assure that those contributions have been appropriately managed. This paper addresses both steps by, first, introducing the notion of hazard contribution modes (HCMs) a categorization of the ways in which the ML elements of LECs can contribute to hazardous system states; and, second, describing how argumentation patterns can capture the reasoning that can be used to assure HCM mitigation. Our framework is generic in the sense that the categories of HCMs developed i) can admit different learning schemes, i.e., supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, and ii) are not dependent on the type of system in which the LECs are embedded, i.e., both cyber and cyber-physical systems.     Impact of Argument Type and Concerns in Argumentation with a Chatbot

    Conversational agents, also known as chatbots, are versatile tools that have the potential of being used in dialogical argumentation. They could possibly be deployed in tasks such as persuasion for behaviour change (e.g. persuading people to eat more fruit, to take regular exercise, etc.) However, to achieve this, there is a need to develop methods for acquiring appropriate arguments and counterargument that reflect both sides of the discussion. For instance, to persuade someone to do regular exercise, the chatbot needs to know counterarguments that the user might have for not doing exercise. To address this need, we present methods for acquiring arguments and counterarguments, and importantly, meta-level information that can be useful for deciding when arguments can be used during an argumentation dialogue. We evaluate these methods in studies with participants and show how harnessing these methods in a chatbot can make it more persuasive
