    Minimization of IEEE 802.11p Packet Collision Interference through Transmission Time Shifting

    V2I communications are characterized by the presence of network nodes in vehicles and in the infrastructures that these vehicles use, as well as by the wireless interactions among them. Safety-related applications demand stringent requirements in terms of latency and packet delivery probability, especially when safety messages have to be delivered to vehicles by the infrastructure. Interference issues stem from the typical characteristics of wireless communications, i.e., the noise of the wireless medium, the limited communication range of the wireless entities, and the receiver passivity of all the conventional wireless transceivers during transmissions. This paper presents a synchronization mechanism to artificially replicate at a host premises destructive interference due to hidden terminals, together with an application-level technique to minimize that interference by shifting the packet transmission time, similarly to the MAC TDMA channel access method. As both have been field-tested, the paper also analyzes the results of these tests, all performed with real hardware on IEEE 802.11p over different frequencies and transmission powers, and with repeatability in mind. The resulting figures attest that interference effects due to hidden terminals may indeed take place on real IEEE 802.11p networks, and that carefully designed time-shifting mechanisms can actively mitigate them

    Inter-vehicular communication for collision avoidance using Wi-Fi Direct

    Inter vehicular collision avoidance systems warn vehicle drivers of potential collisions. The U.S Department of Transportation (USDOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in February 2014 has decided to enable vehicular communication among lightweight vehicles to exchange warning messages to prevent accidents. Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is a communication standard that allows short-range communication between vehicles and infrastructure, exchanging critical safety information to avoid collision. DSRC safety applications include forward collision warning, sudden brake warning and blind spot warning among many other warnings. It is also important to exchange location information between vehicles and pedestrians to avoid accidents. To exchange safety messages using DSRC, dedicated equipment is required. Pedestrians may not benefit from DSRC, as they may not carry dedicated DSRC safety equipment with them. Wi-Fi Direct technology can be used as an alternate to DSRC to exchange safety messages. Wi-Fi Direct enabled smartphones can exchange important safety information without the need of additional equipment. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connections are formed between Wi-Fi Direct devices to exchange safety information. The Group Owner acts as the access point through which all clients communicate. This work examines how Wi-Fi Direct can be used in vehicular environment to exchange basic safety information between smartphones of vehicle drivers. Wi-Fi Direct and DSRC transmission delays are calculated are calculated. The results show, with more devices in a Wi-Fi Direct group the congestion in the network increases due to unnecessary retransmissions through the group owner. As mitigation, a broadcast method is proposed to reduce the delay. The results illustrate that the P2P group can now accommodate more vehicles and the delay is lesser. The calculations are extended to compute the transmission delay when P2P groups of same size exchange safety messages. The results help analyse the limitations of the system

    Cooperative Traffic Control Solution for Vehicle Transition from Autonomous to Manual Mode exploiting Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) Technology

    Nowadays, automated vehicles represent a promising technology to face the stringent requirements for safety and traffic efficiency in the automotive environment. Driving responsibilities will be gradually addressed to the machine, and the role of human pilots will be progressively reduced to passengers. The interaction between passengers and the automated system will create different risks that have not been considered in the past. In particular, the transition between autonomous and manual mode is understood as a risky situation. During the transition, the driver manifests driving irregularities and loss of situation awareness that may endanger himself and other participants on the road. Hence, the vehicle transitioning needs a higher quantity of space around it to be considered safe. However, no effective solution has been developed yet. This thesis aims to design a cooperative traffic control solution that will manage the movements of the group of vehicles to increase the free space around the one transitioning. It will exploit another tool that will play a fundamental role in the future of the automotive industry: connected vehicles technology. C-V2X technology will create a medium for vehicles to exchange information and cooperate. A controller managing the cooperation between vehicles has been developed to help a smooth and safe vehicle repositioning. The controller will be positioned in a centralized computing facility and it will communicate with all the vehicles. The controller defines rules to move vehicles together and enlarge the free space around the vehicle transitioning without collisions. The rules are modeled by a spring-mass-damper system, that can be exploited to control the longitudinal behavior of automated vehicles. In particular, the spring-mass-damper system can manage smooth migration between vehicle dispositions without oscillations. A computer simulation is used to test the performance of the proposed traffic control system. The simulation environment is constituted by three main components: traffic flow, controller and communication network. It has been tested with the software VEINS, which provides interaction between a network simulator (OMNeT++) and a traffic simulator (SUMO). The traffic flow represents the interactions between vehicles. The controller analyzes the data and sends control messages to all vehicles. The communication network will share the data concerning vehicles’ position and speed and control messages. The proposed cooperative vehicle control system demonstrated to reduce the risks of the transition with the smooth motion of vehicles. The controller is able to achieve the safety requirements without reducing the level of comfortability of vehicles’ passengers

    Reliable Message Dissemination in Mobile Vehicular Networks

    Les réseaux véhiculaires accueillent une multitude d’applications d’info-divertissement et de sécurité. Les applications de sécurité visent à améliorer la sécurité sur les routes (éviter les accidents), tandis que les applications d’info-divertissement visent à améliorer l'expérience des passagers. Les applications de sécurité ont des exigences rigides en termes de délais et de fiabilité ; en effet, la diffusion des messages d’urgence (envoyés par un véhicule/émetteur) devrait être fiable et rapide. Notons que, pour diffuser des informations sur une zone de taille plus grande que celle couverte par la portée de transmission d’un émetteur, il est nécessaire d’utiliser un mécanisme de transmission multi-sauts. De nombreuses approches ont été proposées pour assurer la fiabilité et le délai des dites applications. Toutefois, ces méthodes présentent plusieurs lacunes. Cette thèse, nous proposons trois contributions. La première contribution aborde la question de la diffusion fiable des messages d’urgence. A cet égard, un nouveau schéma, appelé REMD, a été proposé. Ce schéma utilise la répétition de message pour offrir une fiabilité garantie, à chaque saut, tout en assurant un court délai. REMD calcule un nombre optimal de répétitions en se basant sur l’estimation de la qualité de réception de lien dans plusieurs locations (appelées cellules) à l’intérieur de la zone couverte par la portée de transmission de l’émetteur. REMD suppose que les qualités de réception de lien des cellules adjacentes sont indépendantes. Il sélectionne, également, un nombre de véhicules, appelés relais, qui coopèrent dans le contexte de la répétition du message d’urgence pour assurer la fiabilité en multi-sauts. La deuxième contribution, appelée BCRB, vise à améliorer REMD ; elle suppose que les qualités de réception de lien des cellules adjacentes sont dépendantes ce qui est, généralement, plus réaliste. BCRB utilise les réseaux Bayésiens pour modéliser les dépendances en vue d’estimer la qualité du lien de réception avec une meilleure précision. La troisième contribution, appelée RICS, offre un accès fiable à Internet. RICS propose un modèle d’optimisation, avec une résolution exacte optimale à l'aide d’une technique de réduction de la dimension spatiale, pour le déploiement des passerelles. Chaque passerelle utilise BCRB pour établir une communication fiable avec les véhicules.Vehicular networks aim to enable a plethora of safety and infotainment applications. Safety applications aim to preserve people's lives (e.g., by helping in avoiding crashes) while infotainment applications focus on enhancing the passengers’ experience. These applications, especially safety applications, have stringent requirements in terms of reliability and delay; indeed, dissemination of an emergency message (e.g., by a vehicle/sender involved in a crash) should be reliable while satisfying short delay requirements. Note, that multi-hop dissemination is needed to reach all vehicles, in the target area, that may be outside the transmission range of the sender. Several schemes have been proposed to provide reliability and short delay for vehicular applications. However, these schemes have several limitations. Thus, the design of new solutions, to meet the requirement of vehicular applications in terms of reliability while keeping low end-to-end delay, is required. In this thesis, we propose three schemes. The first scheme is a multi-hop reliable emergency message dissemination scheme, called REMD, which guarantees a predefined reliability , using message repetitions/retransmissions, while satisfying short delay requirements. It computes an optimal number of repetitions based on the estimation of link reception quality at different locations (called cells) in the transmission range of the sender; REMD assumes that link reception qualities of adjacent cells are independent. It also adequately selects a number of vehicles, called forwarders, that cooperate in repeating the emergency message with the objective to satisfy multi-hop reliability requirements. The second scheme, called BCRB, overcomes the shortcoming of REMD by assuming that link reception qualities of adjacent cells are dependent which is more realistic in real-life scenarios. BCRB makes use of Bayesian networks to model these dependencies; this allows for more accurate estimation of link reception qualities leading to better performance of BCRB. The third scheme, called RICS, provides internet access to vehicles by establishing multi-hop reliable paths to gateways. In RICS, the gateway placement is modeled as a k-center optimisation problem. A space dimension reduction technique is used to solve the problem in exact time. Each gateway makes use of BCRB to establish reliable communication paths to vehicles
