Cloud Computing and Open Source Software: Issues and Developments
Cloud computing is a global paradigm that is
offering useful services in virtually all spheres of human
endeavor based on infrastructure made available to users on
demand. The cloud provides on demand, elastic and scalable
resources to meet the needs of users. The cloud has application
deployed by cloud service providers that can be accessed by
several users at the same time. Cloud computing also offers a
programming environment that allows users deploy and run
their own in-house applications. Massive storage and
computing resources are also available on the cloud. There are
currently open source applications that can be used to
implement cloud applications. The source code which can be
improved on and adapted for use is available to the user online.
Such open source software tools allow the deployment of cloud
for any type of domain. The study was executed by means of
review of some literature available on cloud computing and
open source software. This paper examines present trends in
cloud computing and open source software and provides a
guide for future research. In the present work, the objective is
to answer the following question: what is the current trend and
development in cloud computing and open source software?
The review’s finding is that OpenStack provides the most
comprehensive infrastructure in cloud computing and open
source software

Student-Centered Learning: Functional Requirements for Integrated Systems to Optimize Learning
The realities of the 21st-century learner require that schools and educators fundamentally change their practice. "Educators must produce college- and career-ready graduates that reflect the future these students will face. And, they must facilitate learning through means that align with the defining attributes of this generation of learners."Today, we know more than ever about how students learn, acknowledging that the process isn't the same for every student and doesn't remain the same for each individual, depending upon maturation and the content being learned. We know that students want to progress at a pace that allows them to master new concepts and skills, to access a variety of resources, to receive timely feedback on their progress, to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple ways and to get direction, support and feedback from—as well as collaborate with—experts, teachers, tutors and other students.The result is a growing demand for student-centered, transformative digital learning using competency education as an underpinning.iNACOL released this paper to illustrate the technical requirements and functionalities that learning management systems need to shift toward student-centered instructional models. This comprehensive framework will help districts and schools determine what systems to use and integrate as they being their journey toward student-centered learning, as well as how systems integration aligns with their organizational vision, educational goals and strategic plans.Educators can use this report to optimize student learning and promote innovation in their own student-centered learning environments. The report will help school leaders understand the complex technologies needed to optimize personalized learning and how to use data and analytics to improve practices, and can assist technology leaders in re-engineering systems to support the key nuances of student-centered learning
Digital Receipt System Using Mobile Device Technologies
Cell phones are the most prevalent computing devices. They come pre-loaded with many different functions such as a digital camera, a mobile web browser, a streaming media player, games, GPS navigation, and more. However, if the banks have their way, the cell phone may become the preferred method of payment for everyday purchases. When that happens, there will be a need to securely send and store the receipt information so that they can be quickly analyzed. This thesis will demonstrate the use of a Digital Receipt system to manage transactions using Bluetooth technology to communicate between mobile devices. This expands on a previous thesis titled Bi-Directional Information Exchange with Handheld Computing Devices. (Qaddoura, 2006) Cell phones have now been added into the setup. Thereby, expanding the Digital Receipt concept to include many more affordable computing devices, thus, increasing the likelihood that this application will be accepted by the general public

Adoption of wireless internet parks: An empirical study in Qatar
This paper examines the adoption of free wireless internet parks (iPark) by Qatari citizens as means of accessing electronic services from public parks. The Qatar government has launched the iPark concept with a view of providing free internet access for all citizens while enjoying the outdoors. By offering free wireless Internet access, the Qatari government encourages its citizen's to actively participate in the global information society with a view of bridging the digital divide. Using a survey based study this research set out to examine the Qatari citizens' perceptions of the iPark initiative. Results of the survey showed that there is a positive level of relation between the independent variables, usefulness, ease of use, Internet safety, and Internet speed/response time and one dependent variable, intention to use the iPark in Qatar. The paper provides a discussion on the key findings, research implications, limitations, and future directions for the iPark initiative in Qatar
