    Contributos para suportar o desenvolvimento de sistemas de diálogo

    With the increase of technology present in our daily routine, a specific area rose exponentially. Spoken dialogue systems are increasingly popular and useful: they provide an easier and more versatile access to large and diverse sets of information. Nowadays there is a vast knowledge base regarding this topic, as well as different systems capable of performing numerous tasks just by simply processing voice input. There are also an increasing set of tools for their development. Despite recent advances, development of dialog systems continues to be challenging. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute and make possible and simple the development of new dialogue systems for Portuguese: by selecting, adapting and combining existing tools/frameworks. Supported by the enhancements made to the selected basis framework, two different dialog systems were developed: the first is an assistant aimed at a Smart Home environment - one of areas that benefited the most with the development of dialog systems - and the second targeting accessible tourism. The first assistant was developed aligned with the Smart Green Homes project. It implied the definition of scenarios and requirements that later helped defining the ontology and the system. Another requirement for this system was the inclusion of the back-end system developed previously as part of the Smart Green Homes project. The second was aligned with the project ACTION in the area of Tourism. It was developed for users with accessibility needs, e.g., impaired movement or vision.Com o aumento da tecnologia presente na nossa rotina diária, uma área específica subiu exponencialmente. Os sistemas de diálogo são cada vez mais populares e úteis: proporcionam um acesso mais fácil e versátil a grandes e diversificados conjuntos de informação. Hoje em dia existe uma vasta base de conhecimento sobre este tema, bem como diferentes sistemas capazes de executar inúmeras tarefas através do processamento de uma entrada de voz. Há também um conjunto crescente de ferramentas para o seu desenvolvimento. Apesar dos avanços recentes, o desenvolvimento de sistemas de diálogo continua a ser um desafio. O principal objetivo desta tese é contribuir e tornar possível e simples o desenvolvimento de novos sistemas de diálogo que suportem português: selecionando, adaptando e combinando ferramentas existentes. Baseado nas melhorias feitas nas ferramentas bases selecionadas, foram desenvolvidos dois sistemas de diálogo diferentes: o primeiro é um assistente dirigido a um ambiente Smart Home - uma das áreas que mais beneficiou com o desenvolvimento de sistemas de diálogo - e o segundo visando o turismo acessível. O primeiro assistente foi desenvolvido alinhado com o projeto Smart Green Homes. Implicou a definição de cenários e requisitos que mais tarde ajudaram a definir a ontologia e o sistema. Outro requisito para este sistema foi a inclusão do sistema back-end desenvolvido anteriormente como parte do projeto Smart Green Homes. O segundo assistente foi alinhado com o projeto ACTION na área do Turismo.     A knowledge-based approach towards human activity recognition in smart environments

    For many years it is known that the population of older persons is on the rise. A recent report estimates that globally, the share of the population aged 65 years or over is expected to increase from 9.3 percent in 2020 to around 16.0 percent in 2050 [1]. This point has been one of the main sources of motivation for active research in the domain of human activity recognition in smart-homes. The ability to perform ADL without assistance from other people can be considered as a reference for the estimation of the independent living level of the older person. Conventionally, this has been assessed by health-care domain experts via a qualitative evaluation of the ADL. Since this evaluation is qualitative, it can vary based on the person being monitored and the caregiver\u2019s experience. A significant amount of research work is implicitly or explicitly aimed at augmenting the health-care domain expert\u2019s qualitative evaluation with quantitative data or knowledge obtained from HAR. From a medical perspective, there is a lack of evidence about the technology readiness level of smart home architectures supporting older persons by recognizing ADL [2]. We hypothesize that this may be due to a lack of effective collaboration between smart-home researchers/developers and health-care domain experts, especially when considering HAR. We foresee an increase in HAR systems being developed in close collaboration with caregivers and geriatricians to support their qualitative evaluation of ADL with explainable quantitative outcomes of the HAR systems. This has been a motivation for the work in this thesis. The recognition of human activities \u2013 in particular ADL \u2013 may not only be limited to support the health and well-being of older people. It can be relevant to home users in general. For instance, HAR could support digital assistants or companion robots to provide contextually relevant and proactive support to the home users, whether young adults or old. This has also been a motivation for the work in this thesis. Given our motivations, namely, (i) facilitation of iterative development and ease in collaboration between HAR system researchers/developers and health-care domain experts in ADL, and (ii) robust HAR that can support digital assistants or companion robots. There is a need for the development of a HAR framework that at its core is modular and flexible to facilitate an iterative development process [3], which is an integral part of collaborative work that involves develop-test-improve phases. At the same time, the framework should be intelligible for the sake of enriched collaboration with health-care domain experts. Furthermore, it should be scalable, online, and accurate for having robust HAR, which can enable many smart-home applications. The goal of this thesis is to design and evaluate such a framework. This thesis contributes to the domain of HAR in smart-homes. Particularly the contribution can be divided into three parts. The first contribution is Arianna+, a framework to develop networks of ontologies - for knowledge representation and reasoning - that enables smart homes to perform human activity recognition online. The second contribution is OWLOOP, an API that supports the development of HAR system architectures based on Arianna+. It enables the usage of Ontology Web Language (OWL) by the means of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). The third contribution is the evaluation and exploitation of Arianna+ using OWLOOP API. The exploitation of Arianna+ using OWLOOP API has resulted in four HAR system implementations. The evaluations and results of these HAR systems emphasize the novelty of Arianna+

    An Ontology Based Approach Towards A Universal Description Framework for Home Networks

    Current home networks typically involve two or more machines sharing network resources. The vision for the home network has grown from a simple computer network, to every day appliances embedded with network capabilities. In this environment devices and services within the home can interoperate, regardless of protocol or platform. Network clients can discover required resources by performing network discovery over component descriptions. Common approaches to this discovery process involve simple matching of keywords or attribute/value pairings. Interest emerging from the Semantic Web community has led to ontology languages being applied to network domains, providing a logical and semantically rich approach to both describing and discovering network components. In much of the existing work within this domain, developers have focused on defining new description frameworks in isolation from existing protocol frameworks and vocabularies. This work proposes an ontology-based description framework which takes the ontology approach to the next step, where existing description frameworks are in- corporated into the ontology-based framework, allowing discovery mechanisms to cover multiple existing domains. In this manner, existing protocols and networking approaches can participate in semantically-rich discovery processes. This framework also includes a system architecture developed for the purpose of reconciling existing home network solutions with the ontology-based discovery process. This work also describes an implementation of the approach and is deployed within a home-network environment. This implementation involves existing home networking frameworks, protocols and components, allowing the claims of this work to be examined and evaluated from a ‘real-world’ perspective

    Learning Ontology Relations by Combining Corpus-Based Techniques and Reasoning on Data from Semantic Web Sources

    The manual construction of formal domain conceptualizations (ontologies) is labor-intensive. Ontology learning, by contrast, provides (semi-)automatic ontology generation from input data such as domain text. This thesis proposes a novel approach for learning labels of non-taxonomic ontology relations. It combines corpus-based techniques with reasoning on Semantic Web data. Corpus-based methods apply vector space similarity of verbs co-occurring with labeled and unlabeled relations to calculate relation label suggestions from a set of candidates. A meta ontology in combination with Semantic Web sources such as DBpedia and OpenCyc allows reasoning to improve the suggested labels. An extensive formal evaluation demonstrates the superior accuracy of the presented hybrid approach

    Speech-based metadata generation for web map search

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesMetadata is indispensable for data discoverability and interoperability. Most datasets utilize automatic techniques to create metadata; nevertheless, metadata creation still requires manual interventions and editions, yet manually metadata creation is a tedious task. The study proposes a prototype that introduces speech recognition in the metadata creation process. Users can generate content by speaking. Afterward, the prototype transforms it into metadata with JSON-LD format, a popular metadata format and utilized by mainstream search engines. A user study was conducted to understand the impact of speech-based interaction on user performance and user satisfaction. The result showed no signi cant performance di erence between speech-based and typebased by the e ciency, slip rate, and di culty rating evaluation. In the user experience evaluation, participants consider the type-based metadata creation is pragmatic, and speech-based metadata creation is hedonic. It suggests that the mix-mode can complement mutually with the advantages of each and optimize the user experience

    This open access book provides an in-depth description of the EU project European Language Grid (ELG). Its motivation lies in the fact that Europe is a multilingual society with 24 official European Union Member State languages and dozens of additional languages including regional and minority languages. The only meaningful way to enable multilingualism and to benefit from this rich linguistic heritage is through Language Technologies (LT) including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Natural Language Understanding (NLU), Speech Technologies and language-centric Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. The European Language Grid provides a single umbrella platform for the European LT community, including research and industry, effectively functioning as a virtual home, marketplace, showroom, and deployment centre for all services, tools, resources, products and organisations active in the field. Today the ELG cloud platform already offers access to more than 13,000 language processing tools and language resources. It enables all stakeholders to deposit, upload and deploy their technologies and datasets. The platform also supports the long-term objective of establishing digital language equality in Europe by 2030 – to create a situation in which all European languages enjoy equal technological support. This is the very first book dedicated to Language Technology and NLP platforms. Cloud technology has only recently matured enough to make the development of a platform like ELG feasible on a larger scale. The book comprehensively describes the results of the ELG project. Following an introduction, the content is divided into four main parts: (I) ELG Cloud Platform; (II) ELG Inventory of Technologies and Resources; (III) ELG Community and Initiative; and (IV) ELG Open Calls and Pilot Projects

    Non-Intrusive Computing

    Pervasive computing is an important trend today. It concerns devices and services in a smart space that interact with users in a simple, natural, and harmonious way. Many problems in this domain have been studied from different perspectives in various projects. However, one important characteristic of pervasive computing, which is how to make it non-intrusive so that users can focus on their tasks, has received little formal attention. Nowadays, many computing entities including smart devices, and software components, are involved in our daily lives, and users need to deal with them as well as with other people. Besides, people are easy to reach with multiple devices. We believe there should be a systematic way to help users avoid intrusive ones. We propose a model for posing and answering two questions: will an interaction intrude on its receiver if delivered, and given that the interaction is deliverable, how can it be delivered effectively and not too overtly? With this model, the intrusion problem is analyzed and the essential factors are identified. A quantitative approach is used, so that factors have quantitative values for comparison and computation. We also apply context to refine them in order to achieve better results. We then illustrate how to materialize the model and build a system whose design is inspired by the Jabber framework that includes a collection of standards, technologies, and projects for instant messaging. The discussion is at a general level that does not depend on Jabber. However, by choosing Jabber in implementation, we reuse existing software and technologies, and benefit from Jabber/XMPP standardization, its low entry barrier for application developers, and its rich community support. The main contributions of our work are two-fold. First, we propose a model for intrusiveness in pervasive computing. Second, we address the problem at the system level by designing and realizing it. We also make use of standardized instant-messaging technologies, more precisely Jabber, in the system instantiation to reuse existing software, making the system more flexible and extensible
