    Toward a Maturity Model for DSS Development Processes

    Despite recent progress with Decision support systems (DSS) development methodologies, a gap still exist in terms of theability to assess the maturity of an organization with respect to its DSS development process. A need exist to be able todescribe DSS development processes at a meta-level. Equally important is the ability to provide organization withprescriptions to increase the maturity of their DSS development processes.In this paper, we propose a Decision Support System Maturity Model (DSS-MM). The model draws on extant literaturerelated to DSS development methodologies, practices and processes to identify pertinent DSS development practices anddefine maturity models for these practices. From a theoretical perspective, this research presents the first maturity modelspecifically targeting DSS development. From a practical perspective, the model provides a framework for organizations toassess their DSS development maturity level and devise process improvement initiatives to address any limitations withexisting practices

    Crossing the death valley to transfer environmental decision support systems to the water market

    Environmental decision support systems (EDSSs) are attractive tools to cope with the complexity of environmental global challenges. Several thoughtful reviews have analyzed EDSSs to identify the key challenges and best practices for their development. One of the major criticisms is that a wide and generalized use of deployed EDSSs has not been observed. The paper briefly describes and compares four case studies of EDSSs applied to the water domain, where the key aspects involved in the initial conception and the use and transfer evolution that determine the final success or failure of these tools (i.e., market uptake) are identified. Those aspects that contribute to bridging the gap between the EDSS science and the EDSS market are highlighted in the manuscript.     IT governance evaluation at the population and civil registry office in Kolaka district using COBIT 5 framework

    The implementation of information technology is compulsory to fit organizational goals. This research aims to evaluate the quality of information technology services at the Population and Civil Registry Office at Kolaka District based on COBIT 5 Framework that focused on DSS (deliver, service and support) domain by measuring the Maturity Level using Process Assessment Model (PAM). The Population and Civil Registry Office is under the local government ‘s auspices which is essential in managing the population. The data collection method was done by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews. This study used 8 (eight) respondents based on the RACI chart. This research was expected to reach level 3 (established process) to create IT governance that fits organizational goals and international standards. From the research result, it is known that the maturity level from the evaluation process conducted by COBIT 5 using the processes DSS-01, DSS-02, DSS-03, DSS-04, DSS-05, and DSS-06 were as follows: 2 processes were at level 1 (performed process), namely the DSS-05 and DSS-06 while the others (DSS-01, DSS-02, DSS-03, and DSS-04) were at level 2 (managed process)

    A Causal Comparative Analysis of Leveraging the Business Analytical Capabilities and the Value and Competitive Advantages of Mid-level Professionals Within Higher Education

    The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study is an empirical examination of the differences in business intelligence capability and the value and competitive advantage of mid-level higher education academia professionals from community colleges, four-year public, and four-year private institutions within the United States. Institutions of higher education have an overabundant amount of student data that is often inaccessible and underutilized. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Management Information Systems/Decision Support Systems theory, using two-way ANOVA analysis, this research examined factors to understand the mastery of readiness for mid-level professionals in higher education institutions to embrace digital technologies and resources to develop a culture of digital transformation. This study applied the Business Analytics Capability Assessment survey responses from 176 mid-level higher education professionals, from community colleges, four-year private, and four-year public institutions, to understand how higher education professionals use Business Intelligence Analytics (BIA) and Big Data (BD) to improve the organization, operational business decisions, and data management strategies to provide actionable insights. This study found no significance between the type of institution that has business intelligence capability and the value and competitive advantage. A significant difference with a medium effect was identified between the Business Analytics Capability and the Value and Competitive Advantage for mid-level professionals who do and do not utilize BIA and BD resources. Therefore, this study calls for future research to understand how successful institutions have implemented BIA and BD tools and how higher education is shaped on a macro level

    Data driven decision support systems as a critical success factor for IT-Governance: an application in the financial sector

    IT-Governance has a major impact not only on IT management but also and foremost in the Enterprises performance and control. Business uses IT agility, flexibility and innovation to pursue its objectives and to sustain its strategy. However being it more critical to the business, compliance forces IT on the opposite way of predictability, stability and regulations. Adding the current economical environment and the fact that most of the times IT departments are considered cost centres, IT-Governance decisions become more important and critical. Current IT-Governance research and practise is mainly based on management techniques and principles, leaving a gap for the contribution of information systems to IT-Governance enhancement. This research intends to provide an answer to IT-Governance requirements using Data Driven Decision Support Systems based on dimensional models. This seems a key factor to improve the IT-Governance decision making process. To address this research opportunity we have considered IT-Governance research (Peter Weill), best practises (ITIL), Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and frameworks (COBIT). Key IT-Governance processes (Change Management, Incident Management, Project Development and Service Desk Management) were studied and key process stakeholders were interviewed. Based on the facts gathered, dimensional models (data marts) were modelled and developed to answer to key improvement requirements on each IT-Governance process. A Unified Dimensional Model (IT-Governance Data warehouse) was materialized. To assess the Unified Dimensional Model, the model was applied in a bank in real working conditions. The resulting model implementation was them assessed against Peter Weill‘s Governance IT Principles.Assessment results revealed that the model satisfies all the IT-Governance Principles. The research project enables to conclude that the success of IT-Governance implementation may be fostered by Data Driven Decision Support Systems implemented using Unified Dimensional Model concepts and based on best practises, frameworks and body of knowledge that enable process oriented, data driven decision support

    Unmanned and Autonomous Systems of Systems Test and Evaluation: Challenges and Opportunities

    The introduction of Unmanned and Autonomous Systems (UAS) brings substantial, interesting, and in many cases, new challenges to the Department of Defense’s Test and Evaluation community. The test and evaluation of UASs becomes significantly more complicated than traditional systems, especially as we approach more fully autonomous systems and need to test integrated systems of systems in joint military operational testing environments. Compounding the multi-faceted considerations involved in test and evaluation, systems have continuously increasing complexity and capabilities and can be at different maturity levels. Emergent properties, particularly those that are unplanned and undesired, also need to be considered. Challenges identified by the Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Test community and related to the test and evaluation of the UASs are discussed.     Industry 4.0 & Servitization: Role and impact of digital servitization strategies in international industrial markets

    Il presente progetto di ricerca riguarda l'indagine di due fenomeni principali, la digitalizzazione e la servitizzazione, e la risultante ‘servitizzazione digitale’, all’interno dei mercati industriali. L'obiettivo principale di questo studio è contribuire alla generazione di nuova conoscenza circa i fenomeni indagati e fornire a manager e professionisti validi suggerimenti su come affrontarli con successo. La digitalizzazione e la servitizzazione digitale sono ambiti di ricerca recenti ma in forte crescita, attorno ai quali sta convergendo l'attenzione di numerose figure accademiche e professionali. Nonostante il grande dinamismo che caratterizza tali fenomeni, le imprese industriali si trovano ad affrontare ancora oggi diverse sfide nel tentativo di implementarli. In effetti, le aziende manifatturiere dimostrano di percepire barriere elevate all'investimento in strategie digitali. Adottando un approccio alla problematizzazione, è possibile notare come sia necessario sviluppare ulteriori conoscenze circa i processi di digitalizzazione e servitizzazione al fine di comprendere al meglio i vantaggi e le sfide ad essi connessi. Partendo dall’identificazione di una serie di nuove aree di ricerca ancora poco studiate, questa tesi analizza empiricamente i fenomeni di digitalizzazione e servitizzazione. A tal fine, il presente lavoro di ricerca è strutturato in cinque capitoli principali. Il Capitolo I – Fondamenti teorici e note metodologiche – passa in rassegna la letteratura disponibile su digitalizzazione e servitizzazione digitale e fornisce chiarimenti sulle note metodologiche adottate in questa tesi. Lo scopo del capitolo è fornire un'analisi teorica preliminare sulla digitalizzazione e la servitizzazione. Il Capitolo II – I meccanismi di diffusione della conoscenza di Industria 4.0 nei distretti industriali tradizionali: evidenze dall'Italia – indaga empiricamente la digitalizzazione a livello di analisi contestuale. Il capitolo esamina il contesto e i meccanismi attraverso i quali si stanno diffondendo le tecnologie di Industria 4.0. Il Capitolo III – Verso una prospettiva multilivello sulla servitizzazione digitale – studia empiricamente i percorsi di servitizzazione digitale di due aziende manifatturiere a livello intersettoriale. Il Capitolo IV – Tensioni intra e interorganizzative di una strategia di servitizzazione digitale: evidenze dal settore meccatronico in Italia – è uno studio empirico circa le tensioni emergenti legate alla servitizzazione digitale. In particolare, il capitolo implementa un'indagine approfondita su un'azienda industriale esplorando longitudinalmente le fasi del suo percorso di servitizzazione digitale al fine di districarne la complessità. Il Capitolo V – Osservazioni conclusive e percorsi di ricerca futuri – traccia le conclusioni della ricerca e fornisce linee di ricerca future. I principali contributi di questo lavoro di ricerca possono essere riassunti come segue. Questa tesi evidenzia la stretta connessione tra i fenomeni di digitalizzazione e servitizzazione e prova che la digitalizzazione può essere ‘un’arma a doppio taglio’. I risultati empirici raccolti descrivono la servitizzazione digitale attraverso la sua natura multilivello, che si manifesta su tre livelli: micro (individuale), organizzativo e di network. Inoltre, sottolinea l'impatto del networking nei processi di digitalizzazione e servitizzazione; nuovi attori entrano a far parte della catena del valore e possono influenzare l’andamento dei due fenomeni. Infine, la complessità dei processi di digitalizzazione e servitizzazione è provata empiricamente e si propone evidenza delle difficoltà incontrate dalle aziende manifatturiere nel tentativo di realizzarli
