    Structure on Attitude Polarization

    Get PDF
People hold attitudes about a wide range of issues. People hold attitudes about issues ranging from toothpaste brands to foreign policies. One issue, for example, that has recently become salient in both the United States and Europe is illegal immigration. Consider two people sitting around discussing current affairs. One person mentions illegal immigration. The other person states that immigration is becoming a problem, but there are other things the government should worry about first. After a few minutes of thought, the gentleman that stated the government should worry about other things first blurts out that illegal immigration will be the downfall of this country! How could this person’s attitudes become so extreme in such a short period of time? When people are given an opportunity to think about an attitude object (e.g., persons, places, issues), their attitudes toward that attitude object tend to polarize (Tesser, 1978; Tesser, Martin & Mendolia, 1995). That is, attitudes that are initially favorable tend to become more favorable, whereas initially unfavorable attitudes tend to become more unfavorable. This phenomenon is referred to as self generated attitude change. Sadler and Tesser (1973) first researched this process of self generated attitude change by playing participants a recording of either a “likeable partner” that complimented these participants or a “dislikable partner” that criticized these participants. Participants were then asked to either think about their partner or were distracted from thinking about their partner. When given an opportunity to think about their partner, participants in a “likeable partner” condition held more favorable attitudes about their partner than did those participants in a distraction condition. Similarly, when given an opportunity to think about their partner, participants in a “dislikeable partner” condition held more unfavorable attitudes about their partner than did those participants in a distraction condition

Critical Reflections on Seidman\u27s On Constitutional Disobedience

    Get PDF
This symposium contribution critically examines Louis Seidman’s book Constitutional Disobedience (2012). Seidman questions whether American constitutionalism really has the positive values commonly attributed to it. He suggests that citizens and legislators should shift away from claims that the Constitution requires or forbids certain governmental choices and toward more straightforward, “all-things-considered” political debate about “how to solve real, modern problems” and “about what will produce the best country.” I argue against Seidman\u27s view that straightforward political talk will be less polarizing and divisive than constitution-invoking discussion. Seidman, I think, might romanticize ordinary political discussion in somewhat the same way that orthodox constitutional theory romanticized the opinions of constitutional courts

STRATEGIES OF CONSTRUCTING APPEALS IN OBAMA’S VICTORY SPEECH

    Get PDF
One of important things that a speaker should pay attention in delivering a speech is constructing appeals. By constructing appeals in the speech, it will make the well-organized content of speech to be more influencing and convincing. In addition, constructing appeals in the speech is also primarily essential as it particularly impacts to the audience’s feeling. As Baird stated (1981: 19) the feelings toward the speaker are important determinants of listeners’ acceptance of the speaker’s message. Constructing audience’s appeals is an important point in communication in the objective of persuading audience (Baird, 1981:199). By constructing appeals in the message, the speaker can also motivate the listeners to attend the message and to persuade them. In addition, the speaker not only needs to give people reasons for doing or thinking things, we also need to stir their emotions so that those actions or thought are strong and long lasting. As a matured politician having well experienced in public speaking, Obama has many inspiring speeches which achieved immediate popularity around the world. Many of his speeches are broadcasted in video sharing web site like YouTube, garnering many views and being watched by million views around the world. One of his inspiring speeches is his victory speech delivered right after he won U.S. presidential election. Obama's victory speech is a powerful example speech in communication on how to connect with and inspire audiences. He gave his victory speech at Grant Park in his home city of Chicago, Illinois. There were tears of joy in Chicago when America's new president-elect Barack Obama took to the stage to speak to his supporters. It was watched by an estimated crowd of 240,000. Considered one of the most widely-watched and repeated political addresses in recent history, Obama's speech focused on the major issues facing the United States and the world, all echoed through his campaign slogan of change. Obama’s victory speech consists of influencing people's beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors. He persuaded people when he somehow convinced them, to think what he wanted them to think, feel what he wanted them to feel, or do what he wanted them to do. As a learner, I am interestingly interested to analyze strategies of constructing appeals in Obama’s victory speech as it is a model of great powerfully inspiring speech

    Art You Alright

My works are mirrors that reflect my life, my thoughts, my heart and my soul. Since my works are about my experience and reactions toward my life, cultural differences between east and west culture have a tremendous impact on my works. Moving to America was a turning point to me these years. The surrounding is totally different and everything is new to me. I found that I’m not only learning art but also learning how to live in a foreign place. Once my life was occupied by these unknown things, my works manifest every emotions I have in every moment. This is not me trying to unify art and life, It is them integrating with each other spontaneously. Somehow I think that art is life, and life is art

Thinking, with Heidegger, the Religion-Science-Theology Relation

    Get PDF
This work is an attempt to think the essential nature of the interrelationships among religion, science, and theology (RST) out of Heidegger\u27s engagement with the question of Being. Three primary questions initially motivated this inquiry: First, how are the interrelations (if any) among religion, science, and theology to be understood? Second, is a relation of dialogue, in some sense, possible among the three elements of the RST triad? And third, does theology have a rightful place in the public square dominated by the view that science serves as the gold standard for rationality and truth? The inquiry interweaves five threads, or lines of inquiry, which are posited as pertinent in the current RST discourse and central to Heidegger\u27s thought. The first thread consists of the chapter themes: phenomenology, truth, technology, and ethics. The other four threads--comportment toward things, reflection, thinking, and destiny--each cross-cut, or traverse, the chapter themes. By Heidegger\u27s lights, each cross-cutting thread harbors a duality: comportment toward things as objectification or non-objectification; reflection as Reflexion or Besinnung (mindfulness); thinking as calculative or meditative; and destiny as fate or the sending of Being (Geschick). Heidegger\u27s critique of each duality--and the expanded global context suggested here for thinking the RST relation--offer fresh opportunities for reinscribing the customary formulation of theology (i.e., reflection upon religious experience and belief) as a basis for a compelling dialogue among religion, science, and theology today

Motivating Urban Middle School Math Students While Considering their Attitudes and Perceptions

    Get PDF
This final project reflects the research of an urban middle school mathematics teacher to improve the motivation and performance of his eighth grade students using a variety of proven techniques, including eliciting positive attitudes and perceptions toward mathematics and the educational process. The study of attribution theory and the use of rewards and incentives can be useful when trying to elicit positive attitudes and perceptions from students. Teaching in an urban setting presents many challenges, but it is the challenge that motivates and makes it an exciting place to teach. The research section is followed by a series of sixteen lesson plans and a unit test on Volume and Surface Area in the Math 8 curriculum. In addition to the Lesson Topic, NYS Learning Standards, Key Idea, Lesson Preparation including Warm up and Work Time, Assessment and Homework, the first lesson plan includes some of the things that teachers should think about while preparing lesson plans
