    Desarrollo de papeles biocativos por injerto de moléculas específicas en celulosa

    Tesis (DCI)--FCEFN-UNC, 2019En la presente tesis se presenta el desarrollo de papeles bioactivos con potencial aplicación en el envasado activo de alimentos. Para tal fin, se propuso el injerto de eugenol, un compuesto de origen natural con propiedades antimicrobiana, antioxidante y repelente de insectos, en celulosa, utilizando ácido policarboxílico como agente ligante. Con el objetivo de evaluar la escalabilidad del proceso propuesto, se estudiaron distintas tecnologías de curado, tales como calentamiento por convección, infrarrojo, microondas y conducción. En todos los casos, se analizaron la influencia de las variables operativas sobre el avance de la reacción y propiedades finales del papel preparado, utilizando un diseño de experimentos Doehlert para elegir las experiencias a realizar, y analizando los resultados mediante metodología de superficie de respuesta y análisis estadístico ANOVA. Se pudo comprobar que la reacción de injerto de eugenol en papel comercial se produjo con éxito en todas las tecnologías estudiadas. Asimismo, se encontraron las condiciones óptimas de reacción para cada una de las tecnologías, para lo cual se buscó un compromiso entre el avance de la reacción y las propiedades finales del material (mecánicas y color). A partir de estas condiciones, se prepararon papeles y se realizó una caracterización más específica para su aplicación como envase de alimentos comparando los papeles modificados con el papel virgen. Se analizaron las propiedades mecánicas por ensayo de tracción, rasgado y punzonado y se midió la absorción de agua y la capacidad de degradación. Por otro lado, las propiedades bioactivas analizadas fueron la actividad antioxidante, antimicrobiana, repelente e insecticida de gorgojos (T. castaneum y R. dominica). Una vez probado que el papel modificado presenta buenas características físicas y bioactivas para su posible aplicación en el envasado de alimentos, se realizaron prototipos de envasado para harina, como alimento representativo de alimentos derivados de cereales, susceptibles al ataque de plagas. En este estudio se analizó la migración de reactivos, propiedades organolépticas y conservación del alimento, arrojando resultados promisorios para la industria de envases de alimentos. Finalmente, se realizó una comparación de las tecnologías de curado ensayadas, analizando diferentes aspectos como avance de reacción, propiedades finales, apariencia, tiempo de reacción, consumo de energía, entre otros, como así también disponibilidad y uso de estas tecnologías a escala industrial, seleccionando la tecnología de conducción como la más adecuada para una propuesta de escalado industrial.Fil: Muratore, Florencia.     Assessing the Effects of Instream Large Wood on Floodplain Aquifer Recharge and Storage at Indian Creek, Kittitas County, Washington, USA

    Numerous stream restoration projects in the Yakima River Basin in Washington have placed large wood (LW) into tributary channels. One intended effect is to divert water onto floodplains to increase groundwater (GW) recharge and seasonal storage in shallow alluvial aquifers during spring high flows with the intention of releasing GW into streams during the drier summer months. Large wood was emplaced in the Indian Creek tributary of the Teanaway River in Kittitas County, Washington beginning in 2016. Potential changes in the groundwater recharge in the adjacent floodplain before and after the LW installation were investigated through stratigraphic analysis, stream-flow modeling, and GW levels in six piezometers installed in 2014 and 2018. Stratigraphic descriptions of the stream banks reveal a ubiquitous silt/clay dominant layer (60-90 cm thick) at a depth of 1 meter or less, overlying a sand and gravel layer (15-50 cm thick), a clay/silt layer (~30 cm thick), and another sand and gravel layer. These relatively continuous clay layers extend at least 2.2 km upstream from the mouth of Indian Creek on both sides of the channel. Similar clay units have been mapped in the region as glacial drift or lacustrine deposits. The measured stream flow and GW levels in the monitoring wells before and after the LW emplacement show no detectable effect of the LW on seasonal or longer-term GW levels. Data loggers show that GW levels return to baseflow within days of monthly precipitation exceeding 70 mm, suggesting GW flow within the permeable sand and gravel layers beneath or between the clay/silt layers. Available data show that the highest spring GW elevations precede peak stream discharge, indicating that the peak streamflow is not a significant source of GW recharge. A 1-dimensional hydraulic model run with and without channel obstructions at spring monthly average discharge and peak discharge suggests that the water surface elevation may increase ~10-50 cm within and upstream of LW. This assessment of stratigraphy coupled with GW data and stream-flow model can provide insight into the effectiveness of GW recharge from LW restoration projects in similar settings within the region

    Building body identities - exploring the world of female bodybuilders

    This thesis explores how female bodybuilders seek to develop and maintain a viable sense of self despite being stigmatized by the gendered foundations of what Erving Goffman (1983) refers to as the 'interaction order'; the unavoidable presentational context in which identities are forged during the course of social life. Placed in the context of an overview of the historical treatment of women's bodies, and a concern with the development of bodybuilding as a specific form of body modification, the research draws upon a unique two year ethnographic study based in the South of England, complemented by interviews with twenty-six female bodybuilders, all of whom live in the U.K. By mapping these extraordinary women's lives, the research illuminates the pivotal spaces and essential lived experiences that make up the female bodybuilder. Whilst the women appear to be embarking on an 'empowering' radical body project for themselves, the consequences of their activity remains culturally ambivalent. This research exposes the 'Janus-faced' nature of female bodybuilding, exploring the ways in which the women negotiate, accommodate and resist pressures to engage in more orthodox and feminine activities and appearances

    The temporality of rhetoric: the spatialization of time in modern criticism

    Every conception of criticism conceals a notion of time which informs the manner in which the critic conceives of history, representation and criticism itself. This thesis reveals the philosophies of time inherent in certain key modern critical concepts: allegory, irony and the sublime. Each concept opens a breach in time, a disruption of chronology. In each case this gap or aporia is emphatically closed, elided or denied. Taking the philosophy of time elaborated by Giorgio Agamben as an introductory proposition, my argument turns in Chapter One to the allegorical temporality which Walter Benjamin sees as the time of photography. The second chapter examines the aesthetics of the sublime as melancholic or mournful untimeliness. In Chapter Three, Paul de Man's conception of irony provides an exemplary instance of the denial of this troubling temporal predicament. In opposition to the foreclosure of the disturbing temporalities of criticism, history and representation, the thesis proposes a fundamental rethinking of the philosophy of time as it relates to these categories of reflection. In a reading of an inaugural meditation on the nature of time, and in examining certain key contemporary philosophical and critical texts, I argue for a critical attendance to that which eludes those modes of thought that attempt to map time as a recognizable and essentially spatial field. The Confessions of Augustine provide, in the fourth chapter, a model for thinking through the problems set up earlier: Augustine affords us, precisely, a means of conceiving of the gap or the interim. In the final chapter, this concept is developed with reference to the criticism of Arnold and Eliot, the fiction of Virginia Woolf and the philosophy of cinema derived from Deleuze and Lyotard. In conclusion, the philosophical implications of the thesis are placed in relation to a conception of the untimeliness of death

    Clinicians' experiences of using the MCA (2005) with people with intellectual disabilities

    Section A is a narrative synthesis of the empirical literature of professionals’ knowledge of the MCA and how they apply it when working with people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Eleven papers were identified for inclusion in this review. Four themes, with subthemes, were identified: ‘processes involved’, ‘working with complexity’, ‘knowledge gaps and variability’ and ‘assessor needs’. Methodological strengths and weaknesses are also considered. Findings are discussed in relation to clinical implications and recommendations for future research are outlined. Section B is an empirical study using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore the experiences of clinicians using the MCA (2005) with people with ID to assess capacity to consent to sex. Eight clinicians, who had completed between 2 and 40-50 (mode=2) MCA assessments regarding consent to sex. Three superordinate themes, with subthemes, are outlined and discussed in relation to the existing literature. Limitations, clinical implications and areas of future research are considered

    Coloniality and the Courtroom: Understanding Pre-trial Judicial Decision Making in Brazil

    This thesis focuses on judicial decision making during custody hearings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The impetus for the study is that while national and international protocols mandate the use of pre-trial detention only as a last resort, judges continue to detain people pre-trial in large numbers. Custody hearings were introduced in 2015, but the initiative has not produced the reduction in pre-trial detention that was hoped. This study aims to understand what informs judicial decision making at this stage. The research is approached through a decolonial lens to foreground legacies of colonialism, overlooked in mainstream criminological scholarship. This is an interview-based study, where key court actors (judges, prosecutors, and public defenders) and subject matter specialists were asked about influences on judicial decision making. Interview data is complemented by non-participatory observation of custody hearings. The research responds directly to Aliverti et al.'s (2021) call to ‘decolonize the criminal question’ by exposing and explaining how colonialism informs criminal justice practices. Answering the call in relation to judicial decision making, findings provide evidence that colonial-era assumptions, dynamics, and hierarchies were evident in the practice of custody hearings and continue to inform judges’ decisions, thus demonstrating the coloniality of justice. This study is significant for the new empirical data presented and theoretical innovation is also offered via the introduction of the ‘anticitizen’. The concept builds on Souza’s (2007) ‘subcitizen’ to account for the active pursuit of dangerous Others by judges casting themselves as crime fighters in a modern moral crusade. The findings point to the limited utility of human rights discourse – the normative approach to influencing judicial decision making around pre-trial detention – as a plurality of conceptualisations compete for dominance. This study has important implications for all actors aiming to reduce pre-trial detention in Brazil because unless underpinning colonial logics are addressed, every innovation risks becoming the next lei para inglês ver (law [just] for the English to see)

    Desarrollo de materiales bioactivos con potencial aplicación odontológica mediante impregnación asistida por CO2 supercrítico

    Tesis (DCI)--FCEFN-UNC, 2021En esta tesis se estudió el proceso de incorporación de eugenol en fibras de poliamida 6 (PA6) mediante la impregnación asistida por CO2 supercrítico para desarrollar un material con propiedades antimicrobianas con una potencial aplicación odontológica. Para este propósito, se construyó un equipo de alta presión en el que se llevaron a cabo múltiples ensayos de impregnación de eugenol y de sorción de CO2 en un hilo dental comercial de PA6 en distintas condiciones de presión y temperatura (40 – 60 °C y 8 – 12 MPa). Con el fin de encontrar las mejores condiciones del proceso de impregnación, se evaluó la influencia de diferentes variables operativas (presión, temperatura, tiempo de contacto y velocidad de despresurización) sobre la cantidad de eugenol impregnada en el material. Además, se estudiaron los principales fenómenos difusivos que ocurren en el proceso de impregnación del eugenol en condiciones supercríticas. Para ello, se hicieron ensayos de cinética de sorción del CO2 y del eugenol en PA6 a diferentes condiciones de presión y temperatura y se determinó el coeficiente de difusión aparente para ambas especies en este polímero. Por otra parte, se evaluaron las propiedades finales del material impregnado, analizando las propiedades mecánicas, térmicas y morfológicas del material original, presurizado con CO2 e impregnado con eugenol. Adicionalmente se evaluó la actividad antimicrobiana del material impregnado frente a dos bacterias comunes (Escherichia coli y Staphylococcus aureus). Asimismo, se estudió la migración del compuesto activo impregnado en aire y en saliva artificial, obteniendo datos importantes para el potencial desarrollo de un producto comercial, como la estimación de la vida útil, el tipo de envase, y tipo de aplicación del producto. Finalmente, se hizo un diseño y dimensionamiento de un proceso industrial para la impregnación de eugenol en bobinas de fibras de PA6 en CO2 supercrítico, a partir de los datos de eficiencia de impregnación y parámetros difusivos del hilo impregnado con eugenol previamente obtenidos, realizando el diseño de la bobina, el equipo impregnador y los cálculos de sus principales requerimientos de masa y energía.Fil: Mosquera Ruiz, José Euliser.     Formal Innovations to Clinical Cognitive Science and Assessment

    Mathematical modeling is increasingly driving progress in clinical cognitive science and assessment. Mathematical modeling is essential for detecting certain effects of psychopathology – mental disturbance--through comprehensive understanding of tell-tale cognitive variables such as workload capacity and efficiency in using capacity, and their contrast under quantitative measurement. The research paradigm guiding this formal clinical science is outlined. An example using a distinctive cognitive abnormality in schizophrenia – taking longer to cognitively represent encountered stimulation – provides an illustration of a quantitative framework for studying intricate mental health-impairing phenomena. Added benefits of formal developments, among others, include symptom description and prediction, new methods of cognitive- and statistical-science grounded clinical assessment over time, both for individuals and treatment regimens, and refinement of the cognitive-function side of clinical functional neuroimaging
