Affective games:a multimodal classification system
Affective gaming is a relatively new field of research that exploits human emotions to influence gameplay for an enhanced player experience. Changes in playerâs psychology reflect on their behaviour and physiology, hence recognition of such variation is a core element in affective games. Complementary sources of affect offer more reliable recognition, especially in contexts where one modality is partial or unavailable. As a multimodal recognition system, affect-aware games are subject to the practical difficulties met by traditional trained classifiers. In addition, inherited game-related challenges in terms of data collection and performance arise while attempting to sustain an acceptable level of immersion. Most existing scenarios employ sensors that offer limited freedom of movement resulting in less realistic experiences. Recent advances now offer technology that allows players to communicate more freely and naturally with the game, and furthermore, control it without the use of input devices. However, the affective game industry is still in its infancy and definitely needs to catch up with the current life-like level of adaptation provided by graphics and animation
Psychological elements explaining the consumer's adoption and use of a website recommendation system: A theoretical framework proposal
The purpose of this paper is to understand, with an emphasis on the psychological perspective of the research problem, the consumer's adoption and use of a certain web site recommendation system as well as the main psychological outcomes involved. The approach takes the form of theoretical modelling. Findings: A conceptual model is proposed and discussed. A total of 20 research propositions are theoretically analyzed and justified. Research limitations/implications: The theoretical discussion developed here is not empirically validated. This represents an opportunity for future research. Practical implications: The ideas extracted from the discussion of the conceptual model should be a help for recommendation systems designers and web site managers, so that they may be more aware, when working with such systems, of the psychological process consumers undergo when interacting with them. In this regard, numerous practical reflections and suggestions are presented
Multisensor-based human detection and tracking for mobile service robots
The one of fundamental issues for service robots is human-robot interaction. In order to perform such a task and provide the desired services, these robots need to detect and track people in the surroundings. In the present paper, we propose a solution for human tracking with a mobile robot that implements multisensor data fusion techniques. The system utilizes a new algorithm for laser-based legs detection using the on-board LRF. The approach is based on the recognition of typical leg patterns extracted from laser scans, which are shown to be very discriminative also in cluttered environments. These patterns can be used to localize both static and walking persons, even when the robot moves. Furthermore, faces are detected using the robot's camera and the information is fused to the legs position using a sequential implementation of Unscented Kalman Filter. The proposed solution is feasible for service robots with a similar device configuration and has been successfully implemented on two different mobile platforms.
Several experiments illustrate the effectiveness of our approach, showing that robust human tracking can be performed within complex indoor environments
Towards Full Automated Drive in Urban Environments: A Demonstration in GoMentum Station, California
Each year, millions of motor vehicle traffic accidents all over the world
cause a large number of fatalities, injuries and significant material loss.
Automated Driving (AD) has potential to drastically reduce such accidents. In
this work, we focus on the technical challenges that arise from AD in urban
environments. We present the overall architecture of an AD system and describe
in detail the perception and planning modules. The AD system, built on a
modified Acura RLX, was demonstrated in a course in GoMentum Station in
California. We demonstrated autonomous handling of 4 scenarios: traffic lights,
cross-traffic at intersections, construction zones and pedestrians. The AD
vehicle displayed safe behavior and performed consistently in repeated
demonstrations with slight variations in conditions. Overall, we completed 44
runs, encompassing 110km of automated driving with only 3 cases where the
driver intervened the control of the vehicle, mostly due to error in GPS
positioning. Our demonstration showed that robust and consistent behavior in
urban scenarios is possible, yet more investigation is necessary for full scale
