On some intriguing problems in Hamiltonian graph theory -- A survey
We survey results and open problems in Hamiltonian graph theory centred around three themes: regular graphs, -tough graphs, and claw-free graphs
The influence of composition, annealing treatment, and texture on the fracture toughness of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plate at cryogenic temperatures
The plane strain fracture toughness K sub Ic and conventional tensile properties of two commercially produced one-inch thick Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plates were determined at cryogenic temperatures. One plate was extra-low interstitial (ELI) grade, the other normal interstitial. Portions of each plate were mill annealed at 1088 K (1500 F) followed by either air cooling or furnace cooling. The tensile properties, flow curves, and K sub Ic of these plates were determined at 295 K (room temperature), 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature), and 20 K (liquid hydrogen temperature)
Influence of the microstructure on the thermal shock behavior of cemented carbides
The influence of single and repetitive sudden changes of temperature on the mechanical integrity of cemented carbides was investigated as a function of their microstructure. Thermal shock resistance was assessed by testing the residual flexural strength of hardmetal beams after being subjected to thermal shock by water quenching. Results indicate that hard cemented carbides tend to exhibit a superior resistance to the nucleation of thermal shock damage but a lower resistance to the propagation of this damage mechanism than tough grades, and vice versa. These trends are in agreement with those expected from the evaluation of the thermal shock Hasselman’s parameters. The evidenced strength loss after thermal shock may be related to the subcritical growth of intrinsic flaws driven by localized microcracking surrounding them. Results also point out on Ni-base hardmetals to exhibit a slightly higher resistance to abrupt changes of temperature than Co-base ones.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Hamilton cycles in graphs and hypergraphs: an extremal perspective
As one of the most fundamental and well-known NP-complete problems, the
Hamilton cycle problem has been the subject of intensive research. Recent
developments in the area have highlighted the crucial role played by the
notions of expansion and quasi-randomness. These concepts and other recent
techniques have led to the solution of several long-standing problems in the
area. New aspects have also emerged, such as resilience, robustness and the
study of Hamilton cycles in hypergraphs. We survey these developments and
highlight open problems, with an emphasis on extremal and probabilistic
approaches.Comment: to appear in the Proceedings of the ICM 2014; due to given page

Multi-response optimization of CO2 laser welding process of austenitic stainless steel
Recently, laser welding of austenitic stainless steel has received great attention in industry, due to its wide spread application in petroleum refinement stations, power plant, pharmaceutical industry and households. Therefore, mechanical properties should be controlled to obtain good welded joints. The welding process should be optimized by the proper mathematical models. In this research, the tensile strength and impact strength along with the joint operating cost of laser welded butt joints made of AISI304 was investigated.
Design-expert software was used to establish the design matrix and to analyze the experimental data. The relationships between the laser welding parameters (laser power, welding speed and focal point position) and the three responses (tensile strength, impact strength and joint operating cost) were established. Also, the optimization capabilities in design-expert software were used to optimise the welding process.
The developed mathematical models were tested for adequacy using analysis of variance and other adequacy measures. In this investigation the optimal welding conditions were identified in order to increase the productivity and minimize the total operating cost. Overlay graphs were plotted by superimposing the contours for the various response surfaces. The process parameters effect was determined and the optimal welding combinations were tabulated
