    Assistive technologies and strategies to support the medication management of individuals with hearing and/or visual impairment : a scoping review

    Background -- Individuals with sensory impairment (visual and/or hearing) experience health inequalities and increased risk of medication-related iatrogenic disease compared with the general population. Assistive technologies and tailored strategies could support medication management for individuals with sensory impairment to reduce harm and increase the likelihood of therapeutic benefit. Objective -- This scoping review identified assistive technologies and strategies to support medication management of /for people with hearing and/or visual impairment. Methods -- Standard scoping review methodology was used to identify studies that evaluated technologies or strategies designed to support people with sensory impairment with independent medicine management. Electronic databases were searched (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, ACM, Cochrane) from inception to 18/07/22. Independent duplicate screening, selection and data extraction was undertaken. Results -- Of 1,231 publications identified 18 were included, reporting 17 studies, 16 of which evaluated technologies to assist people with visual impairment and one study to assist people with hearing impairment. The range of technologies and devices included: applications for android phones (n=6); eyedrop assistance devices (n=5); audio-prescription labelling/reading systems (n=2); touch-to-speech devices (n=2); continuous glucose monitoring system (n=1); and magnifying technology (n=1). Ten studies tested early-stage prototypes. Most participants could operate the technologies effectively and deemed them to be useful. Conclusions -- Despite the increasing number of medicine-related assistive technologies there has been limited empirical evaluation of their effectiveness for supporting individuals with sensory impairment. Prototypes appear to be useful for people with visual or hearing impairment, however wider ‘real-life’ testing is needed to confirm the benefits of these technologies

    An interactive medication reminder to bond senior citizens and their family members

    This project is about assisting seniors in their daily life. More and more senior citizens in the world are facing the problem of living alone. After research, I find that medication is a very important part of seniors’ life. My design is about medication reminder that can also connect the seniors with their family members. At first, I focused on the social relationship of senior citizens and started to research medication reminders in the market. I also read many books and magazines about the medication of senior citizens and try to figure out the size and volume of my design. Then I made mockups to try to test the best way for seniors to control a reminder such as the behavior of remembering medications to take. After that, I made my prototypes and brought them to the nursing home. More refinements were made after these discussion in the nursing home. The final version of my design uses an interesting and noticeable way to remind senior citizens to take their medicine. Besides that, my product can connect to phone or a device of seniors’ family members, which gives seniors better connection with their family members

    Value in Experience. Design and Evaluation Framework based on Case Studies of Novel Mobile Services

    The concept of ‘value’ has received extensive interest in research in the fields of psychology, marketing and, more recently, human-computer interaction (HCI). Gaining insights into users’ personal values can lead to a better understanding of user behaviour. However, the concept of value is not clearly defined, and researchers have produced differing views on the conceptualization of the construct. In the past decade, user experience has received considerable attention in HCI research. Yet the relationship between user experience and value has not gained much attention. The goal of this dissertation is to better understand and articulate the value in user experience. The focus is on novel mobile service solutions, taking into account the viewpoint of different user groups. Achieving an understanding of different user groups will greatly help design successful mobile services for target user populations. The empirical foundation for this dissertation is findings concerning user experience from seven individual case studies conducted in the field with the endusers. Interpretive case studies of novel mobile services in varying usage contexts involved different user groups: children, teenagers, college students and vision and memory -impaired older people. An initial value framework is developed as a synthesis from the literature. By utilizing this framework, the user experience findings obtained are re-examined from the point of view of value through a crosscase analysis and synthesis. Based on this analysis, value parameters from individual mobile service case studies are interpreted and categorized. The initial value framework is complemented by relying on the value parameters identified from the case studies. This work contributes to the field of HCI by showing that user experience and value are closely intertwined. The thesis proposes the concept of “value in experience (ViE)”, which refers to the user’s iterative (subconscious and conscious) interpretation and evaluation of user experience with a service. A value design and evaluation framework is presented and demonstrated by evaluating value in experience from the case studies. Also the designer values are analysed and compared with the value in experience. The framework presents a rich description of value dimensions relevant to specific user groups and mobile service domains in varying usage contexts. Furthermore, value in experience design and evaluation guidelines related to different user groups are proposed. The proposed conceptualization of value in experience offers insights to help understand the dimensions of value, and serves as a lens to guide interpretive analysis of value in experience. The complemented value design and evaluation framework is a tool for identifying and describing the key value dimensions for value in experience evaluation. Furthermore, the framework can support service design processes. The cross-case study findings provide insights into the special characteristics of different user groups and their value priorities in specific service domains. Even though the framework is based on mobile services, its main constructs are expected also to be applicable to other types of digital services

    Systematic Review of Usability Engineering Management Studies for the Aging Population -UEM4Agin

    Usability management is one of the core elements of any software to make it efficient and effective. Unfortunately, most of the time usability as well as its management is neglected while developing software that may result as ineffective and inefficient software design. In different eras different researchers performed studies to highlight the management of usability and to show its importance. Due to the increase in the aging population, the concern for the aging population assistances of each equipment becomes to be necessary. Number of Steps has been taken so far to help out the aging population but remained limited to visual considerations, such as stronger contrasts or larger characters on the displays and printing, or such physical characteristics as the ease for pressing buttons. In this paper, our focus is to perform a systematic review (SR) of usability management specifically for the aging population/senior citizens and its limitations. The systematic review aims to address three research questions: 1) What is the current status of usability management/usability engineering management research for the aging population/senior citizen around the globe? As we found that the literature on usability management for the aging population began in 1992 and increased thereafter, there is a lack of organized research teams and dedicated usability management journals for researching the aging population. High-impact theoretical studies are scarce. On the application side, no original and systematic research frameworks have been developed. The understanding and definition of usability and usability management is not well synchronized with international norms. 2) What are the existing methods, approaches, frameworks and practices that are currently being used in usability engineering management for the aging population? 3) What are the limitations of usability engineering management for the aging population/senior citizen? Purpose of this study is to identify the current research problems, existing studies for providing valid solution to these problems and will find out the limitations of existing work for covering the existing problems in usability engineering management specifically for the aging population. This will be done by performing quantitative literature of different databases and all the results will be gathered by analyzing and summarizing the statistical data using “R Studio”. Remedial techniques for handling the limitation of usability engineering management will be planned in future for the aging population

    3D Printed Tablets (Printlets) with Braille and Moon Patterns for Visually Impaired Patients

    Visual impairment and blindness affects 285 million people worldwide, resulting in a high public health burden. This study reports, for the first time, the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing to create orally disintegrating printlets (ODPs) suited for patients with visual impairment. Printlets were designed with Braille and Moon patterns on their surface, enabling patients to identify medications when taken out of their original packaging. Printlets with different shapes were fabricated to offer additional information, such as the medication indication or its dosing regimen. Despite the presence of the patterns, the printlets retained their original mechanical properties and dissolution characteristics, wherein all the printlets disintegrated within ~5 s, avoiding the need for water and facilitating self-administration of medications. Moreover, the readability of the printlets was verified by a blind person. Overall, this novel and practical approach should reduce medication errors and improve medication adherence in patients with visual impairment
